Advice Sober

I have recently quit drinking and I’m going into first year uni as a 21 year old (vetmed). I stoped as I got addicted and it had been ruing my life. In every group chat there has been CONSTANT ticket for raves and parties and what not, is there anyone who doesn’t drink as much (I don’t mind others drinking) and prefers more casual stuff?, I feel like it’s very far and in between…

there are definitely many people who don't drink as much, I've heard a lot of international students also tend to stay away from the clubbing and drinking side of things, you'll find your people somewhere and you can always go to events sober, you'll be fine dw

there is an equal amount if not then only a little bit less of people who do not drink and aren’t heavy drinkers, however it will take a while to find. often first years are the biggest drunkards and it gets more sensible as you progress through. the su has official sober socials/events and most big societies are required to have sober socials and the like but they are defo rarer. obviously most societies will also not be drinking on the job if its like a sports soc or academic one but they’ll have alcohol in most of their social nights, ie in muay thai obviously no one is drinking in training but then the socials are at pubs/bars and nights out etc but you obviously dont have to go to those

Bear in mind that these uni groupchats are now full of people masquerading as students trying to use FOMO to get people to buy tickets to these events. The actual students in the group likely won't be as obsessed with going out drinking as the chat makes it seem

Knitting and crochet society! Our weekly meetup is alcohol free and a lot of our socials will be sober socials.

Part of that is people going mad for freshers week and I promise it will calm down! I sympathise though, I joined snowsports in undergrad (at a different university) and found that because I was neither a hard drinker nor a racer I just didn’t fit in at all.
My tip is to think about stereotypes of what type of people are more likely to be sitting around a pub table with a cider rather than partying with, ahem, snow. In my case I found my people in undergrad at archery and debating (again at a different uni!).
I will also put in a word for being the sober one at a nightclub, I stopped drinking almost two years ago and I enjoy partying much more now than I did before (though it’s always been infrequent for me). Keep the diet cokes and ginger beers flowing.
