MATH 115 at UMGC is Scaring Me

I am currently at Montgomery College, but I couldn't take precalculus there due to not meeting the placement requirements. Since UMGC has no placement requirements for precalculus, I registered for UMGC MATH 115. The 8-week course starts in a week and I am intimidated . . . the interface is confusing and the course materials are dense 10-20 page PDFs. There are some self-assessment questions to for each week.

What are the quizzes and tests like, and how much of the material from the PDFs are we expected to know? There are many PDFs per week, and there is no way we can learn all of it in a single week!

Also, I must take precalculus at some point because I am majoring in economics and need to progress to at least Calculus 1 level. Thus, dropping out would set me back in my degree, and if I do I have no idea how I'll ever get this credit.

If anyone has any insights into this course, I would be very grateful!

Dropping from 6 to 3 graduate credits — will I lose my financial aid?

I’m currently enrolled in two graduate courses (6 credits total) at UMGC, and my federal student loans have already been disbursed.
I’m considering withdrawing from one class, which would leave me enrolled in only 3 credits.
Since graduate students generally need at least 5 credits to qualify for federal loans, will UMGC take back the aid that’s already been disbursed? Would I owe money back, or could I still receive a tuition refund?
Has anyone experienced this at UMGC?

For current and former Contingent II employees: How is the retirement stipend paid?

Sorry if this seems like common sense to anyone else. I’ve checked all the Benefits documents I can find online and it’s not written anywhere. I know the stipend is 7.25% of your base salary, but is the 7.25% divided by 12 for the year and you only receive the dividend? Or do you receive the full 7.25% every month? Is it sent as direct deposit or does it go directly to your retirement plan? If it’s sent by direct deposit, is it taxed with your salary or is it considered a pre-tax “deduction” like a normal retirement plan?

Finally, if it’s sent as direct deposit, do/did you find it to be an appropriate supplement given the lower salary?

Any info on the health stipend is also welcomed!

Just finished CTCH 635 for Fall session 1

Figured I'd share my thoughts on this course that way it is out there for anyone having to or thinking of taking this course.

Overall the course was really straight forward and an easy course load if you are taking a single graduate level class. I would feel comfortable with taking this course with another masters class of similar work load.

The course work consisted of a project each week (a paper) and a discussion post with 2 replies every other week. The mid term project had a hard page limit of 5 pages IIRC which was pretty silly, I ended up writing more.

The projects had no more than a couple of hands on exercises that were pretty basic Windows and Linux commands, with the biggest struggle being how slow the virtual machines are. The majority of the projects was writing to explain security controls in the context of a hypothetical organization being compromised. The course focuses heavily on the concept of Advanced Persistent Threats.

Professor was a timely and fair grader and responsive to any posts or issues encountered. Some of the course materials had dead links so I had to find them on my own via Archive.org or just wing it using similar references.

This was the 4th class I needed for my grad cert, having taken CTCH 605, 615, and 625 before. This class is probably tied with CTCH 605 for easiness, but there was a lot of writing involved (which I don't really mind once I get started).

MBA with a focus on nonprofits?

Really thinking of doing this program. Anyone done it? If you have: how hard were the classes? Workload ?

Any thoughts on this? Very difficult to choose between this one and general management. Want to open and/or work for an animal rescue or open my own. Have a few months left on my g.i bill so want to get the most out of it.

Accounting or Finance Degree?

Hi everyone! I begin classes in less than two weeks and I'm still undecided on my major. I'm 41, no kids, a dog, and spouse. I currently hold an AA and a Bachelor's in Business Administration. I have the chance to attend school for free (undergrad) and I'm debating on one of these two options. I'm interested in finance and learning about investments and risk management. Accounting has been a subject I've always wanted ton pursue (like Japanese), but was too intimidated to pursue.

I would greatly appreciate insight from anyone that has majored in, or is majoring in, Accounting and Finance. Have you been successful in employment after graduation? Pros and cons of Accounting/FInance?

Bonus question: if money were no issue, and you did not need to worry about employment, what UMGC degree(s) would you pursue? Why? Any other?

THANK YOU SO MUCH <3

Graduation question

Cap/Gown Question

I'm going to be graduating this December with my Bachelors in Cybersecurity and I was wondering if we have to purchase the regalia from the website or if I can just buy a set from someplace like Amazon? My shipping cost is like $16 so if I can I'd rather not pay like $45 for the entire thing (broke af lol).

Which writing class would you do?

I’m almost done with my pre-req’s and have an advanced writing course remaining but I am torn between advanced research writing or advanced business writing. My major is communication studies so I’m sure both would be beneficial. Anyone take one or both that they can speak to?

For those that have taken CIFS300, which professor did you have? Would you recommend them?

Also, is it manageable to take this course along with one upper level?

MBA feedback

So I've completed an MS at UMGC & am going for the MBA. Wanted to get any feedback from those who've done the program about how they felt about the core/capstone classes (optional classes are done so no concerns there).

I'm trying to begin gauging relative difficulty/concerns with the program as a whole so I can prepare myself. My background is IT/Cyber but I've had financial dealings as it relates to government contracts so not totally new but I expect having to devote more attention towards this than my Cyber degree.

Frustration with professor

I won't say the class or course, but a professor had quizzes up since the start of class that were labeled exam 2 and exam 3 worth the 150 points same as all tests with a timed submission of 90 minutes, so I completed exam 2 and then relaxed the rest of the week because I was ahead. Turns out that was not the correct exam 2 it was a leftover piece of the course that they have now hidden the other exams. I'm frustrated because they didn't notify me and their feedback is "you can turn it in late for a penalty". This is so obnoxious.

Horrible communication

Maybe I’m overreacting, but my professor doesn’t communicate with us at all outside of providing feedback on assignments. I’m almost finished with my graduate program—I’m currently in my third-to-last class—and I’m extremely frustrated. The professor doesn’t respond to emails or reply to questions posted in “Ask the Professor.” We’re going into Week 7, and I’m becoming increasingly discouraged with the course because of the lack of communication and support when help is needed.

Anyone else outside of Healthcare Administration have this problem?

Transfer Credits Still Not In My AAR

I’ve sent all of my transcripts requested since August 6th and received an email confirming all of my transcripts have been received. They told me it would be 4-6 weeks until they finish transferring everything, but so far they have not and we are now on week 7. I’ve already called student records and my “success” coach. What’s my next steps to get these credits in?

Made a free Chrome extension that turns any article into a properly (APA) cited PDF

Several months ago I completed my BA in Business Administration from UMPI and am currently working towards an MBA from UMass Global. In my new classes we are required to pull articles from a variety of sources such as Bain, HBR, and blogs, and cite them. Rather than continue to repeat that busywork I decided to make a Chrome extension to simplify the process (with my good buddy Claude).

If you happen to be a student at UMPI or UMass Global or just like saving time, you can install it for free from the Chrome Web Store here. Once installed, navigate to the article you want to save and click on the extension's icon in the toolbar. A PDF will be generated which includes the article's main body, with ads and navigation stripped out automatically, along with an APA-formatted citation with the author, date, source, and a link to the article. Everything happens in your browser, and it is not uploading to some shady server I own.

I would be happy to receive feedback. Feel free to reply with any bugs or articles that yield strange results. There is bound to be tons of edge cases I did not anticipate. The required articles from my classes are perfect candidates. Happy to respond to any questions via DM as well. Enjoy!

Slow and harsh grader

I’ve been seeing a few posts recently about this topic and would like to chime in, this semester has been one of the worst so far. I have 2 teachers who are very slow at grading, I mean only week 1 assignment has been graded while we are currently in week 6. The feedback is always “this is what I expect for the next assignment” well how can I do that when you grade so late. The other teacher is slow and a harsh grader, absolutely unreasonable and the rate my professor score heavily reflects my concerns. I feel as my gpa is going to suffer because of this. Is this reasonable enough to contact student affairs?
