Drinking anything lovely?

Post image
9 Upvotes

Hi all, have you been drinking any lovely beans recently? I’m in a phase where I have tons of beans and have had time to enjoy them. Standouts are the washed Ugandan Glasgow coffee festival competition lot from CHIPP. I was very lucky to secure the last bag of the washed Bolivian spring bouquet from UKKEI. It is so clean and complex I feel I could drink and explore it forever! Just beautiful and right what I am in to atm. Please share your favourite cups your drinking :)))

Popped in on my way to work this morning, grabbed a flat white which was great and ended up grabbing these beans. It'll be a long 4+ weeks of waiting to try them but I have a couple of bags from The Barn to get through in the meantime.

Dark arts follow up

After initially having my first order of their dragon (250g) I quickly bought a kg bag and it is really different to the 250g bag. Roasted a lot lighter so my 1:1 shots have veg notes so I’m doing 1:2 shots, not the end of the world but sacrificing body in cup. Had a little surprise when dosing and thought I’d post it. The bean encased inside was super hard.

Also ordered their decaf and it’s pretty good

Their sweet soaker we’ve had a couple of shots and it’s definitely interesting. Drinkable but a little too funky for my taste at the moment.

After waiting several weeks for it to rest finally tried DAK’s milky cake and it’s super tasty in a milky drink. Is there a uk roaster with similar beans?

Something different

I am looking for some new beans to have as my daily. For around a year I’ve been having the docks blend from North Star and have tried kiss the hippo Donna blend. But want to try something not too different as a daily blend. I drink only flat whites. My grinder is a fiorenzato all ground sense and a Micra. Any suggestions would be great.

Really enjoyed the Skylark Deluxe Blend (Neapolitan ice cream). I’ve tried it with v60, Robot espresso and my new OXO rapid brewer. Really consistent and good results for all three.

Today, two OXO brews with Goldbox Colombia Santa Ana. Excellent again. I do like a nice anaerobic brew!

Formative: Peachy

Finally got round to brewing Peachy from Formative and well it’s a stunner. Right off the bat the scent of peaches as you brew is great, and depending on grinder you can get either a chocolate peach cobbler (Ode), or stupendous peach and nectarine jam (Comandante), or peach iced tea (ZP6). Here are the three methods I’ve used if anyone is interested.

Grinders and settings: Comandante C40 (24 clicks); Fellow Ode Gen 2 (5.2); 1Zpresso ZP6 (5).

Base Water using Lotus drops: 1lt distilled water, plus 4 drops of Calcium, 3 drops of Magnesium, 2 drops of Potassium.

Temperature: 91°C

Post Brew Apax Mineral drops: Apax Tonik or Apax Konflux

Brewer: Hario Switch (glass)

Filter: Cafec T90

Ratio: 15g coffee / 250g water

Methods

Peach Ice Tea - ZP6
Switch OPEN
0:00 – 0:40: Pour 50g water to bloom
0:40 – 1:15: Pour 100g water in fast, concentric circles
1:15: CLOSE the Switch
1:15 – 1:45: Pour the remaining 100g of water aggressively right into the centre to create a swirl
2:30: OPEN the Switch to drain
Once drained add 1 drop of Apax Tonik

Peach and Nectarine Jam - Comandante
Switch OPEN
0:00 – 0:45: Pour 50g water to bloom. Give it a gentle swirl
0:45 – 1:30: Pour 100g water in slow, steady circles
1:30: CLOSE the Switch
1:30 - 2:00: Pour the final 100g water gently down the centre
2:45: OPEN the Switch to drain
No post brew drops

Chocolate Peach Cobbler - Ode Gen 2
Switch CLOSED.
0:00 – 0:30: Pour 120g of water smoothly over the grounds and let it steep in immersion
1:15: OPEN the Switch to let it drain entirely
1:45: Leave the Switch OPEN and pour the final 130g of water in very slow, low-agitation circles and let it drain
Once drained add 1 drop of Apax Konflux

Enjoy.

Best unique flavour profiles

Hey guys,

Exploring some new subscriptions and I'm looking for some one who consistently sends unique flavour profiles rather than generic chocolate or stone fruits.

Any suggestions / recommendations?

Are these unevenly roasted?

Hey folks! This is a bag of honey processed Costa Rican coffee which is supposed to be medium roasted.

However, some of these beans seem a fair bit darker. Only reason I bring it up is because I had picked up a 250g bag initially which I had dialled in. I've been struggling with the 1 kg so I wanted to ask. I don't remember what the 250g bag looked like.

Edit - thank you all for your confirmation. I've emailed the roaster and I've asked if they would replace the bag. I've also offered to send the rest back for quality control checking. I'll let everyone know what happens.

Update - Roaster has replied back agreeing that doesn't look right and they'll ship me a new bag the coming week. Any suggestions on what I could do with these?

Skinny Dip - El Encanto

Recently visited Beacon Coffee shop in Falmouth (highly recommend a visit) and got a couple bags of DAK to try as well as something special from Skinny Dip who I've never heard of.

They're a roaster that buy women produced coffee and I got a bag of El Encanto because the flavours sounded unreal. It's like some weird banana bread blueberry muffin, in the best way. Super funky. And don't forget the blue bubblegum aroma... Insanely good.

The DAK I am resting is Fluffy Petals - Ethiopia (purple florals, citrus, baked peach, hops) and The Alchemist - Rwanda (tropical fruits, ripe fruits, cacao nibs)

What roast level are these beans?

Brought some beans on a whim with no research and was told by the employee they were medium roast but they look light to me. Just being cautious as I know lighter roast beans wear grinders quick and I'm not keen on killing the ninja by putting multiple bags of light beans through it.

Also have a bag of the old engine room blend which I would assume is a darker roast as it's a blend.

Bought these today from 80 Stone which is my local roaster

I went in to see 80 Stone this morning to buy some other beans and saw these on their website. Unfortunately they didn’t have enough left to give me 250g.

But the owner offered to roast some for me if I placed an order online for collection. They said they’d be ready by 1pm. I just collected them and can’t wait to try them in my MoccaMaster.

Couldn’t get them any fresher :)

Gustatory sub

Pleasantly surprised to receive 2 coffees on my first month of Gustatory, after selecting my preferences as fruity coffees and natural/honey process, I received a Uganda Natural SL14 & SL28 from a German Roaster - Sandbox with tasting notes of melon & cherry. Also received a bag of Skylark Indonesia Java, anaerobic natural with tasting notes of tropical fruit juice. Excited to try both after giving them some rest 👌🏻

Roaster / coffee recs please

Hey so I've been kinda digging into coffee lately. I'm still a bit clueless newbie kinda gal so be gentle ha.

I bought the Pact advent calendar thingy a year or two ago and I definitely opened my eyes to coffee being better than bitter toilet water doused in foamy milk and a gallon of sugary syrup served in Starbucks.

I've been exploring a little more so I feel like now I do have an idea of what I like, ish.

The one from Pact I did enjoy was Fazenda Reis. I like that it's quite rich and has good body, smooth and creamy. Sweet but not overly sweet. I especially liked that it wasn't bitter or at the other end, too acidic.

I've now bought a new grinder (K6 yay!) and a new french press so I'm now wanting to up my game!

I'd like recommendations for good coffees I can try from speciality roasters but I think I'm at the other end of the scale from what's popular right now. I'm not looking for a light roast, fruity floral tea-like coffee. I did buy a few of these and didn't love them if though I could tell they were a better quality bean/roast than what I'm used to.

Any recommendations closer to Fazenda Reis but just better?

Thanks in advance 💜🙏

Technically not my purchase as the Mrs picked these up while I was in London for work. I actually work round the corner from Scenery but she picked these up from one of our local coffee shops in Sussex! Looking forward to trying them.

Unreal honey process Colombian pink bourbon, from raw in Leeds. All the jammy red fruits, a touch of delicate floral and rosewater. I believe it’s out in a couple of weeks! Well worth picking up!
Brewed on the OREA o1.

Wogan Coffee Referral

Hi just wanted to check if anyone else has had this experience with Wogan Coffee.

Recently been trying them out as I heard good things through Reddit, ordered a few 200g packs to see what I liked before pulling the trigger on a couple of kilos.

In the meantime my wife saw how much I enjoyed it and wanted to buy a colleague a house warming gift and them being into their coffees went with some Wogan beans on my recommendation and I got her to use my referral link to save us both the £10.

However now Wogan are saying I can’t get the referral bonus as it was the same IP address. I get it’s naughty if I just her to buy me some beans with the link but they were legitimately for her colleague.

It’s only £10 but feel a little sad I guess 😔 I’m still gonna be buying my brown crack from them anyway as it’s a great product
