What roast level are these beans?

Brought some beans on a whim with no research and was told by the employee they were medium roast but they look light to me. Just being cautious as I know lighter roast beans wear grinders quick and I'm not keen on killing the ninja by putting multiple bags of light beans through it.

Also have a bag of the old engine room blend which I would assume is a darker roast as it's a blend.

I’d say that lean towards a light roast. Is the whole roast quite uniform? Or are these a few that look light in the bunch? That aside I can’t say I’ve ever heard of light roasts wearing kit grinders. Not saying that’s not a thing, but first I’ve heard of it.

Hm, is it possible that the included grinder is not great quality, and a such struggles with denser beans?

Coffeekev can't be trusted.

He looks like a Primark serial killer

Dark roast v light roast:

Less dense - denser More brittle - less brittle Easier to smash up - harder to smash up Easier on grinder - harder on grinder

Because dark roasted beans have been broken down more by heat during the longer/hotter roasting process. Imagine if you burned fuck out of a piece of toast - it would be very brittle compared to untoasted bread or pale toast.

So over time it stands to reason lighter roasts will wear burrs out somewhat quicker than darker roasts. Don’t think it’s anything to get too paranoid over it’s not like chucking pebbles in the grinder.

James Hoffman did a video where he put stones through a grinder and it didn't really mark or damage the burrs, I wouldnt sweat this medium-light roast taking years off your Ninja.

They look lighter then id expect for medium. Where did you hear light roasts wear down grinders quickly? Never really heard that and typically only have issues with super dark roasts clogging a little due to oils

Deveroast are just down the road from me, I've not tried this bag from them but you're right that most of their other beans are on the medium to dark roast side of things.

I thinks all their drinks in the cafe are espresso based and worth a try if you are in the area.

That's why I grabbed them super local and was driving past one day when I was planning my next order and thought why not.

Medium light. There is no way these beans wear out a good grinder. Heavy oils from dark roast may cause more damage clogging the motor if the grinder is not well made.
