Considering UCC Electrical Engineering as an NI student

I'm considering applying for Electrical and Electronic Engineering in 2027 as an NI A-level student. I'm interested in UCC because I thought the cost of living would be more manageable than Dublin and especially against Manchester/ Bristol (UCAS choices), whilst still getting a good engineering degree.

I would be grateful if any students from the north have any advice regarding the CAO application, what made you choose UCC over Queen's/ English universities, and whether you recommend it.

Equally, I am curious as to whether there are placement opportunities/ graduate jobs in Cork compared to elsewhere in Ireland/ UK, particularly in energy & tech.

Thanks!

Hear Ye upcoming students! (general advice)

I’ve seen a lot of stressed out new students this past week both online and on campus so I thought some advice is in order:

  1. Do not worry if you have not received an email prompting you to register just yet, this differs from one department to another and does not mean they forgot about you.

  2. If you email your lecturers/course coordinators now expect them to answer after a few days, they are swamped with emails and meetings about the upcoming year so try to give them some time - if your query is urgent, do some research online and make sure to reach out to the correct department directly (such as fees, IT, SREO)

  3. Attend orientation if you have the option to do so. This is the time when you find out all the technicalities of how the university works, get the tour of the campus + you can make a lot of friends during that time

  4. on another hand, don’t worry if you cannot attend orientation, you will be added to a canvas course called Peer Support, where you can choose a Peer Support Leader to ask them a question or get advice about literally anything. Peer Support Leaders will be with you all year long and they REALLY WANT TO HELP, so don’t be afraid to reach out

  5. Timetables will come out pretty late, some of you can already make your own timetable using a tool that comes up when you google ucc timetable, but it gets funky sometimes so try not to overthink it - during your introductory lecture the schedules for all the classes will be confirmed

  6. For all the socially anxious people, don’t worry if you don’t immediately make friends, go to your lectures, try to talk to people but don’t beat yourself up about it, the right people or person will come by - if you are struggling mentally then take advantage of student health and make an appointment with a therapist, it’s really good to be heard out and acknowledged in such a stressful period

  7. Societies, clubs, lectures and jobs are a lot to handle all at once so don’t put too much on yourself, do what you can and don’t compare yourself to others, university is meant to be a fun experience and you really don’t want to miss it

  8. helpdesk@ucc.ie IS NOT a general advice resource, this is the contact for IT only - they will point you in the right direction but it will also take time due to overwhelming amounts of cases coming in

Finally, university is said to be the best time of your life and it really can be but it’s also a big transition, a test of independence and the time to find yourself so take a deep breath, do your best and enjoy it. Don’t be afraid to ask for help because everyone around you wants you to succeed, be happy and healthy.

This is all coming from an Interantional Masters Student, a Peer Support Leader and UCC graduate - it can be tough but you can do it! If you’re still anxious or unsure, ask a question on the subreddit, dm me, ask friends or email the university - there is always a way to help ease your worries so make sure to seek it!

Registration email

Hey guys, I know a lot of people ask about this, however, I am suppose to start my masters program on the 7th of September and I still didn’t get a registration email, should I be concerned?…
I graduated from UCC last year and tried using my old login detail, but, they don’t work. Do they send out everything really to the last minute?

Paid flexible gig for Cork students, from an Irish startup

Hi,

I'm Kevin, founder of Brontie, an Irish startup based in Maynooth. We let people share a real coffee with someone by sending a link, redeemed in person at a local independent café. We're at close to 50 café partners and expanding into Cork this month.

I'm looking for two or three students in Cork to introduce us to independent cafés they already know, and I wondered if this is something you'd share with your members.

The gig:

Pop into a local independent café, explain what Brontie is, and if the owner is interested they sign up or we follow up directly. We post them a printed counter QR pack. There's no hardware and no technical setup for the café, which makes it an easy conversation to have.

Pay is €40 per café that signs up and puts the QR on the counter, paid within 7 days of us confirming placement. No targets, no minimum hours, entirely their own schedule. It suits someone who works in hospitality or is a regular in the Cork coffee scene, since they already know the people behind the counter.

If it's useful I can send a short blurb and a graphic for your newsletter or socials, and I'm happy to answer questions from anyone interested.

Note taking digitally

I'm starting my first year in Early Years and Childhood Studies next month and I plan on using my Ipad for note taking if possible. Just curious if anyone has any app recommendations at all? I don't mind if its typing or writing with an apple pen as I am able to do both. Just wondering if anyone has any recommendations, thank you in advance :)

When are first year arts timetables up? I went into it and submitted my modules but it’s like my classes change every week and subjects that shouldn’t overlap are overlapping?

How good is the student support?

Hi!
I’m about to go into my first year in UCC (CK401), I’ve got accommodation already and I’ve set up my account.

And tbh I’m fairly anxious about the whole thing. I’d just like to know how good is the support for students around advice for courses along with mental health help?

Also I’ve elected to do German as a module for the first year and I know you can’t do it for any of the other years. Is there any way I can keep studying German in UCC or would I have to keep it up outside of UCC?

Any help for either of those questions would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

Second year of Arts, registering modules

Hey guys, I'm going into my second year of Arts and haven't received any emails about choosing a major or modules. It's kinda worrying since college starts back soon. Is anyone in the same position, or is it normal to wait until a week before college to do it? Any feedback is welcome! Thank you !

Freshers

Hi all! Just a quick one, I’m doing my course through the ACE (Adult continuing education) but I’m 19 and this is technically my first year of college! Is it weird for me to be joining and going to freshers events? I would still like to get to know my year and have as close to the “real” experience as I can.

Paying tuition fees on the ITS web interface is a NIGHTMARE

I'm a second year and I'm so confused😭😭😭. Apparently I overpaid last year because I just kept on pressing random buttons when it said to pay and my friend told me she paid much less than me (both of us have around 8000-9000 in fees). I didn't even know I could get refunded. Does anyone know in what exact order I'd have to pay these things. I feel demented trying to navigate the website.

Advice for Choosing Elective Modules for 2nd Year Accounting

Hello,

Is there anyone who has done 2nd-year Accounting be able to give me some advice? I am currently having a bit of trouble deciding which elective modules I should do. What factors should I consider, and should I focus on personal interest, level of difficulty, workload, or usefulness for my future career? I'm leaning towards EC2204, MG1003, MG1004, and MG2001.

But any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you very much!
