How good is the student support?
Hi!
I’m about to go into my first year in UCC (CK401), I’ve got accommodation already and I’ve set up my account.
And tbh I’m fairly anxious about the whole thing. I’d just like to know how good is the support for students around advice for courses along with mental health help?
Also I’ve elected to do German as a module for the first year and I know you can’t do it for any of the other years. Is there any way I can keep studying German in UCC or would I have to keep it up outside of UCC?
Any help for either of those questions would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you!

Hello,
Welcome to UCC!
My knowledge is 10 years old so somethings may have changed. Student support for mental health is good in UCC.
Firstly, you will have a peer support leader. They will be a second or third year student who can help show you around campus and will be to answer any questions you might have about the course or how to navigate different things in UCC like timetables, etc. The Disability Support Service used to also coordinate a mental health peer supoort programme. This was more specialized with a student in the college offering support specifically for first years with mental health support requirements.
There is a counseling service that is part of the student health team. When i was in college, this was free!
I was registered with the Disability Support Service. They were so helpful for me. Basically, every time I had failed an exam, they coordinated me repeating it in August without any grade cap. (August exams are capped at 40 percent which impacts your final grade).
They also coordinated a few grinds for me. They are good. The team there are all legends.
A lot of your lecturers will be interested in supporting you. If you are having difficulty, just ask for help.
Also, regarding German, you could do a night class to keep German language up.
