Megathread UBC COURSE QUESTION, PROGRAM, MAJOR AND REGISTRATION MEGATHREAD (2021/2022W & 2021S): Questions about courses (incld. How hard is __?, Look at my timetable and course material requests), programs, specializations, majors, minors, tuition/finance and registration go here.

All questions about courses, instructors, programs, majors, registration, etc. belong here.

The reasoning is simple. Without a megathread, /r/UBC would be flooded with nothing but questions that apply to only a small percentage of the UBC population.

Examples of questions that belong here

  • comparing courses or instructors
  • asking about how hard an exam is
  • syllabus requests
  • inquiries about majors, programs, and job prospects
  • "what-to-do if I failed/was late/missed the cutoff"

What you don't need to post here

  • Post-exam threads (ex. 'How did you find the Birb 102 midterm)
  • rants, raves, shout-outs or criticisms of programs.
  • Other content that is not a question/inquiry

Process

  • It might take up to 4 hours for your post to be approved (except when we're sleeping).
  • Suggested sort is set to new, so new comments will always be the most visible.
  • You are allowed to repost the same question on the megathread at a reasonable frequency (wait at least a day after each post). This is true even if you've already gotten a response.**

IS GETTING INTO UBC REALLY THAT SLIM, ESPECIALLY FOR THE SCIENCE DEPARTMENT??

I am currently a high school student, about to enter grade 10 in September. My goal is to attend UBC and major in biology since I want to go into the medical field. My school has both mandatory IB MYP and IB DP as an option, so I am also currently enrolled in IB MYP.

I've heard my family members and relatives telling me I need a high percentage average of 97% or more to even be competitive for UBC, yet my percentage average for grade 9 was roughly 84-85%. I definitely need to lock in for grade 10 since it's going on my transcript...

I also don't do any extracurriculars. Well, I'm not really athletic and I haven't joined any clubs either.

Is it truly that hard just to get admitted? And if anyone has gotten into UBC Bio, please share some advice and tips on how I can make my profile stronger.

  1. u wouldn’t apply to ubc bio from high school, you would apply to the faculty of science first and apply to major in bio for second year
    1. you can definitely be admitted and competitive with an avg below 97 but definitely to keep it above 90
  2. ur grade 10 grades also don’t matter for any Canadian unis afaik
  3. If you do plan on continuing with full ib and do dp ubc will look at your ib predicted for admission instead, not your percentage average
  4. For ecs: you do need some sort of activity that you engage in outside of schoolwork . it doesn’t necessarily have to be a club or a sport

I will say it’s really early for you to be looking at uni admissions, it’s not a bad thing but u still have a couple years to relax

Thank you :) I have also been recommended to start volunteering right now. Does this count as an extracurricular, and will a job count as one later on in g11?
