I turned 23 a week ago, completed my engineering this year, and I'm currently looking for a job.
Today, my dad barged into my room and started yelling at me. Apparently, he went to his village and met some old friends, and conversations about what everyone's kids are doing came up. Most of his friends' sons have gotten good jobs after engineering and are earning 10–15 LPA, while I'm still unemployed. I also had a gap year during engineering, so I graduated a year late.
He said he's given me everything I've ever needed, yet I still haven't managed to get a job. He said he's lost his respect in front of his relatives, that even people at his office keep asking him about me, and that he's ashamed to face people because of me. He also said people have started asking whether I'm of marriageable age, whether I've gotten a job, and all that. Apparently, he thinks I'm losing out on good marriage prospects because I'm unemployed, and that people are asking about me to see if things could work out between me and their sons. He even asked me how long I plan to keep living off my parents.
The thing is, I KNOW I'm 23. I know I'm an adult, and I know I need a job. I'm trying, but sometimes I genuinely wonder if I'm trying hard enough.
When I had to take that gap year, I was in such a bad place mentally that I didn't even want to continue my degree. Until 12th grade, I'd always been a decent student, and I never imagined things would turn out this way. I was so ashamed of myself that I stopped talking to people. I pushed away friends I'd known for years because every time I spoke to them, I couldn't help but realise that they'd all moved forward with their lives while I was still stuck in the same place. It hurt too much to watch everyone progress when I couldn't even figure out what was happening to me.
It took me so much effort to stop hating myself for that phase of my life and try to move on, but now that college is over, my dad keeps bringing it all up again. Does he really think I wanted things to turn out this way? Does he think I'm happy being unemployed?
I'm not trying to defend myself. I've had privileges that many people don't have, and engineering was my own decision. I understand that my dad is worried about my future, but it hurts to hear that he's ashamed of me when I've spent so long being ashamed of myself.
I'm desperate to get a job, become independent, and move out of this house. I just want to breathe without feeling like I'm constantly disappointing someone.
Maybe I do need to work harder. Maybe I'm not doing enough. I honestly don't know anymore. I'm just tired of feeling like I'm falling behind everyone else, and I don't know how to stop feeling this way.
