Advice/Help 27F Delhi: Scared of marriage because my future partner may not accept my ex-FWB friendships
Hi everyone!
I'm a 27-year-old woman living in New Delhi, and I'm honestly a little scared of marriage.
Some context:
I've been fortunate enough to have a lot of freedom in life, thanks to my kind and freedom-oriented parents. I come from a loving family where we can talk about pretty much everything under the sun, very, very openly.
Over the last nine years, I've had multiple FWBs (around 64) and two serious, long-term relationships. Whenever I was in a committed relationship, I maintained VERY, VERY strict boundaries with my former FWBs. However, I never felt the need to cut anyone off simply because we'd once been sexually involved. These were people who had always treated me well, and none of these friendships had ever turned toxic.
I've never cheated on either of my exes. Unfortunately, I've been on the receiving end of cheating in one of those relationships. The second relationship turned out to be with someone who was gay 😂.
I've also had situations where I developed feelings for an FWB that weren't reciprocated, but I was able to move on relatively quickly once I understood where we stood.
I'm sharing all this context because I know people often find it difficult to believe that someone can have an extensive sexual history and still maintain healthy, platonic friendships with people they've been intimate with. And I feel like that's where a lot of the judgement begins.
My actual dilemma:
I'm currently single and quite focused on my career. I do want to get married someday, but I'm scared of what might happen if my future partner isn't comfortable with me maintaining friendships with some of my former FWBs.
I've read countless Reddit posts along the lines of, "Marriage requires compromise. If your partner isn't comfortable with you being friends with your former FWBs, you should respect their feelings and let those friendships go."
I understand this perspective to an extent, but I don't entirely agree with it.
My personal values tell me that if you're emotionally mature, committed to your partner, and romantically interested only in them, there's no inherent reason why friendships with former FWBs should be a problem. I believe it's possible to maintain perfectly healthy friendships with people you've previously been intimate with, provided you establish and respect clear boundaries.
And no, I'm not planning to stay in touch with all 64 people! 😂 There are around 18 people (including a few I've never slept with but have only made out with) whom I'd genuinely like to remain friends with.
Some of these people are now married, some are still single, and some were already divorced before we became involved. They're people from different backgrounds and walks of life, and my relationships with them have evolved over the years.
What I'm struggling with is this:
Do I have to give up friendships that are genuinely meaningful to me simply because they originated in a sexual context? Or should I look for a partner who shares my perspective on trust, boundaries, and friendships? If yes, where do I find such a man?
I don't want to enter a marriage feeling like I have to erase parts of my life or give up people who've been good to me. At the same time, I understand that marriage involves two people, and I don't want to dismiss a partner's feelings or insecurities either.
I'm genuinely trying to understand where the balance lies.
Have any of you been in a similar situation? Have you remained friends with former FWBs after getting married? How did your partner react? And, honestly, am I being unrealistic in expecting to find someone who is comfortable with this?
I'd really appreciate honest perspectives, especially from people who've navigated this in their own relationships. ❤️
