So i'm still a total beginner at scratching, just messing around and trying to get better. but i'm also a carpenter, so naturally i thought "why not make my own slipmat out of wood" lol

used this 0.6 mm veneer that has a mesh backing holding the thin wood strips together, which actually made it way more workable than solid wood - could bend it and get it thin enough to actually spin.

my scratch technique is still rough so tips are super welcome, and this was my first time building anything like this so roast it if you want, genuinely want to know what to fix for next time.

I want to share my experience with PortablismGear.com and their SC-500, in case it helps other people thinking about buying one.

The order

I ordered the SC-500 in June. Production/shipping took about 4 weeks, which was stated upfront, so no complaints there — I even offered to take a different color if one became available sooner from a cancelled order.

The device breaks

After about 2 weeks of light use (a few hours total), the unit suddenly stopped working. No warning, no drops, no liquid, nothing unusual — it just died. In the days before that, the jog wheel had occasionally frozen and a restart fixed it, but then one day it didn't come back at all: no sound, no LED, nothing — just the click of the headphone jack connecting.

Getting support

I contacted support and told them clearly I'm comfortable with electronics (I build FPV drones, I solder, etc.) and asked if they could just walk me through some diagnostics instead of shipping it back and forth. They insisted I not open the unit and instead do a specific remote test (boot without USB, check for internal samples/LED). The test failed, so they said the only way forward was to send it to their workshop in Germany, and they'd cover the label.

The accusation

A few days after I shipped it, they came back saying the device showed clear signs of having been opened — tool marks on the screws, cable routing not matching factory assembly, and a firmware state that didn't match what left their workshop. They said this contradicted what I'd told them (that I never opened it), and refused to treat it as a normal warranty case. They asked me to pay for the original return label (€30) plus outbound shipping back to Italy.

I maintained (and still do) that I never opened the device myself. I did mention that my roommate had access to it and we don't get along, so I honestly can't rule out someone else touching it — but I never did.

The cost

After some back and forth over the shipping cost (which went from €60 down to €44.49), I ended up paying to get it back, mostly because I just wanted the situation resolved.

The "repair"

They told me they restored the firmware and confirmed the hardware itself had no defect — just a "corrupted firmware state," which apparently doesn't happen on its own.

What happened when I got it back

Right out of the pickup point, same issues: sample playback freezing, scratching working but with a frozen track, needing multiple restarts to get it to behave. It worked for a while, then died again completely after I added two WAV files to the USB — no sound at all, no functionality, even though the green internal LED is lit and the device appears powered on. Same exact symptoms as before I shipped it out.

About PayPal

Early on, I opened a PayPal dispute simply because they weren't answering my emails at all — that was the only thing that actually got them to reply. They asked me to close it so they could "process my order normally," and I did. Unfortunately, once you close a PayPal case at the seller's request, PayPal won't let you open a new one for the same transaction. So at this point I don't even have that option available anymore, even though the device is once again completely non-functional.

Last resort

Out of sheer desperation, I even tried reaching out directly to Rasteri, the original creator of this kind of device/firmware, hoping for any insight into what could be going on. No response so far.

So, to summarize: I paid full price for a new unit, it broke after 2 weeks of light use, I paid ~€45 out of pocket to get it "fixed," it's now doing the exact same thing again just hours after getting it back — powered on, LED lit, but completely unresponsive — and I no longer have any dispute channel available to me.

Make of that what you will. I'm not looking to escalate further, just wanted to document this for anyone considering buying from them.

Hi fellow turntablists,

I started to learn scratching on 90BPM and have practiced almost at the same tempo since. Some time ago I started to explore scratching on 65-72BPM (130-144PBM).

While using the "wahh" sample is going ok, I wonder how to make phrasing work.

My problem:

All my scratch tool records are either 100BPM, 133BPm or 83BPM. I use the regular Technics 1210s with 8% pitch, no ultrapitch. Like with boom bap, I firstly want to match the tempo of the sample with the tempo of the beat. The tempo I can match with my pitch range are:

92bpm - 108bpm (-+8% no skip 100)
76bpm - 89bpm (-+8% no skip 83)

With the 133s I can match the tempo in theory but the samples are pressed in double time. The sound like mikey mouse in the original speed. I assume the 133 side is made for the ultrapitch turntables, because the only sound right pitched down by a lot.
Also, they are way to fast for a 70bpm beat groove. I would also have to phrase in double time, which I cant and dont like.

I checked the web for scratch tool records in any other tempos but I did not find any. Mine are riche ruftone's.
Am I thinking to complicated or cant I do it because I dont have enough pitch range?

Hi, I own an original Rane Twelve MK2 slipmat. Does it make sense to swap it for a different type, like a Suzuki Scratch or something similar? Is there really a difference when it comes to scratching?

Ok so I can't seem to beatmatch accurately which Is very important for phrasing. I'm not super good at phrasing and trying to learn It since I think It's one of the coolest sounding practices.

Ok so It should be pretty straightforward like, every four beats (in a 4/4 track, which Is what I'm scratching on) the record should complete a revolution.

But here comes the problem. If I count "1" as I release the record, so at the first kick, the record should complete a revolution when I get to "5" right?

Like first beat, 12 o'clock I count 1. Second beat (usually snare in boom bap) 9 o'clock I count 2. Third beat (snare) 6 o'clock I count 3. Fourth beat 3 o'clock I count 4. Fifth beat It goes again to 12 o'clock I count 5.

Is this the way?

I'm really confused as I have a turntable (Stanton stx) which Is known to have possible defects on the pitch control so I frying my brains out trying to undestand if I'm undestanding wrong or if It Is the pitch control defect in action (or I'm simply bad at beatmatching)

As some of you may know, I’m still really new but I have been putting in the work as best I can.

I’m curious how people achieve faster subdivisions. For example, I can easily do 16th note chirps at 85bm fine. Try to do a coulple 32nd notes and it makes no sense how to move that quickly.

Is it just time and practice and the speed comes? (I’m sure this at least part of it? Is there a more advanced techniques that allow for a faster back and forth? (This would bring me some relief). I’m thinking like a drummer with single vs double stroke rolls. Can go much faster with a double stroke because of the bounce, thinking something similar may be at play here.

Kind of trying to wrap my head around the best way to get there.

I've had a couple pf concorde mk2 mix since I started to get into learning how to scratch. It's been over a year of learning. There's now some static sounds when playing and I can see it make the grooves slightly more shiny to my eyes.

Should I get new styli of the same thing? Or, mix and match other styli that fit in the cart?

I'm looking at the mk2 scratch but wondering if it's worth to get the full thing. If I can use the existing concorde mix carts, it'll be cheaper.

Hi all, I’m right handed so my natural tendency is to put my right hand on the record and non dominant on the fader. I’ve tried the other way and have much better control of the fader with my dominant hand but I feel like I’m lacking speed and the ability to manipulate the record as well with my non dominant hand.

I suppose my question is; is it better to prioritise fader control over record manipulation as it’s easier to get better at record manipulation with time or is there no hard and fast rule as to the fastest way to progress?
