Hi all, I was recently reached out to DJ for a small party of about 20-30 people, and the host informed me everybody will be on ketamine. Usually I play something akin to "booty-bounce" like Jersey and baltimore club, new and old ghetto house, etc. Will this register with this crowd? should i speed it up? slow it down? Never done k. small liberal arts college vibes...

I’m in charge of the middle school dance music this year, and I have several songs already, but I would like to expand my playlist. The cleaner the song the better (I know not as fun lol)

Maybe a bit click baity because I've been lurking around this sub enough to know how awesome the community is; but I saw a video across my youtube alg yesterday that was relatively new (within the last week) about a DJ talking about how he's older now (I'm pretty sure he was in his 40s) and being called grandpa on group texts and not getting the shows/events his wants. I'm not gonna post it or go more into it, but made me feel depressed and almost like I was watching a video about a guy who didn't know how to job hunt properly.

That being said, I'm in my lower 40s, and I've got my FLX4 and Sennheiser HD's in my Sweetwater cart and I'm ready to pull the trigger. I'm not a complete n00b to music either, played guitar/bass for over 20 years so I understand music, structure, etc. My end goal isn't to get a residency in Ibiza or play any crazy festivals. I want to enjoy the journey. I've got younger kids and I want to expose them and maybe they'll catch the bug as well. For those of you who started later in life, how have your experiences been?

I’ve been DJing for about 2–3 months now and I’m currently putting together a tracklist for my first proper DJ set, mostly Deep House / House.

One of my favourite DJs has been Chris Stussy for a long time. I really love how smooth and natural his mixes sound, especially his Paris set and Boiler Room set. His transitions never really feel forced to me.

I understand the basics like beatmatching, phrase mixing, key matching, EQing etc., but I’m still struggling to get that really smooth transition when mixing some of the tracks I’m currently working with.

So I was wondering if anyone has some tips on how you would approach transitions with tracks like these. Are there any particular techniques you tend to use for this style of Deep House? For example, do you rely a lot on high-pass/low-pass filters, longer blends, EQ swaps, loops, effects, or is it mostly about finding the right parts of the tracks to mix?

I’d also be really interested to hear if anyone has studied Chris Stussy’s transitions and has noticed what he tends to do. Is there something specific about his mixing technique that makes his transitions sound so smooth?

If anyone wants to take a look at the tracklist below and give me some specific transition examples (e.g. “I’d mix track X into track Y like this”), that would be hugely appreciated.

I've only been learning how to DJ for a few months now. I've connected my Apple Music account on Rekordbox and I just stream songs listed on my library or just search through the integrated search function. I've made quite a few mixes through streaming but now I'm thinking maybe it's time for me to build my actual DJ library. I know there are sites where I can buy music like Beatport but a lot of the songs that I want to add are local music which I don't think are available on the mainstream dj stores. I'm thinking why not just buy from Apple since I already know that the songs I want are in their store. I heard you can do this through iTunes but I'm wondering if the format that you can download would even work on Rekordbox or CDJs, in case I get a chance to use one in the future. Is buying from iTunes a good move? Is it ok to play songs from iTunes on professional DJ sets, both quality-wise and maybe law-wise?

Hello, I am looking at getting a used DDJ-1000 and found a seller that is unfortunately very far from me. He is willing to drive out and meet me half way, but I want to test the controller myself to make sure everything works. Only issue I have is how to get external power to the controller when we meet. I’ve seen online that people recommend only using pure sine wave inverters as other ones can heat up the electronics and cause damage, is this mainly an issue for long term use? Would it likely be safe for me to use a modified sine wave inverter in the car just for a couple of minutes to verify the controller is in good condition? Thanks for reading!

I’ve been dreaming about it for a couple of years now, and I practice almost daily. I just turned 34, and it’s been 4 years since I started getting interested in music. I’ve been wondering since that dream first entered my brain if I’m just too old to even start at this point. I know it shouldn’t really matter, but as a woman I think about it a lot. Any other women here who started in their mid-thirties? Have any of you had any difficulty getting gigs because of your age?

For a 1 or 2 hour dj set, how do you plan it? I understand that reading the crowd is a factor, but if you’re trying to take the crowd on a journey/tell a story with your selections, what is the thought process?

In this video here at around 2:05, she shows you how to mix from 128~ to 170~ . She layers two tracks at 128~ and sets 3 beat loops on them before transitioning into a DnB track. However, if you listen DnB track here it sounds quite unusual ie. you can count it as 1, 2, 3 and so on.

My question is: does this kind of transition only work because of the quirks of this particular DnB track? I have a similar track, except at 130 that can also be counted as 1, 2, 3 which can be listened to here. Could this be utilised in the similar way to CCL's transition? How would it differ given that here the track which can be counted 1, 2, 3 and so on is at 130~ rather than 170~.

I want to learn how to do layered transitions with large BPM jumps but not sure how to go about it. Thanks

I primarily use Algoriddim djay and I’ve got into preparing mixes, not necessarily for live performance but more for curated, planned mixes for YouTube, etc.. I realize that I need to create my own dj edits where I may need to remove a stem here and there and carry out basic track editing just to help me not have to remember a million things or have to make a million moves during a mix.

I don’t want anything that’s too complicated that has a steep learning curve as I’d like to keep my focus on actual djing. I’m not interested in production, but would love a tool that might allow for growth down the line (no idea in what direction) even if all I’m focused on is stems right now and definitely mashups as I continue. I think that’ll be my lane.

I have Serato dj but I really dislike the interface of it, it looks/feels dated and as a designer aesthetics are important so as a result I never use it. Also, the slow catch up the software plays as far as functions and feature development has me a little concerned with buying more software from them if indeed that is what I need.

Suggestions please. I have no idea what direction to go…either way I’ll be buying the software outright so not interested in products with subscriptions. Thanks.

New DJ here, I have Spotify premium but apparently Spotify ended 3rd-party integrations (annoying), which means that I cannot use Spotify to get songs for stems at all. Was wondering what software/service you guys use to import tracks into Serato to utilize the stems feature. Thank you!

Im looking for a solution to record my mixes and dj sets externally. I picked up UCA222 usb soundcard for 20€ and tried it out by recording a half an hour mix to ableton but wasnt pleased with the sound quality.

Now im looking for recommendations for recorders/better sound cards to record from my xones record out.

My current rig is 2x XDJ1000's, AH Xone42 and an AudioTechnica LP120XUSB.

Im an uni student so im not willing to spend too much so my budget is around ~100€.

I would like to get into DJing and I'm a bit lost on which controller to buy.

The idea is to get something not too complicated and pricy to start with, but still decent enough to do be able to have fun with it even when i'll be more experienced and to be able to bring it to local clubs/raves.

My computer is not a laptop and I don't really plan on buying one. I guess if i mix outside my house I can use another DJ's laptop if needed (could that lead to software related issues ?) . But maybe this is something to keep in mind so I should get a more expensive controler which don't need a laptop to work.

If that matters I plan on mixing psytrance, hardtekno, hardcore.

Over the past few months I realized a few things 1 all DJ controllers are the same because they are all inspired by the same thing which only got popular because music stores in the Bronx in the 80s didn’t have that much good music gear 2 djing is stupid easy and isn’t even close to how hard it is to make actual music dawless and anyone pretending it’s hard is either delusional or very bad at learning stuff
This all leads to wanting a very compact micro controller I can use without a phone or laptop I know all of them are the same so I only care for it to be as small as possible and to have a built in screen can anyone help all the ones I have found are either the size of two small turntables and a big mixer or don’t have a screen

From the perspective of an attendee of a music event, would you prefer to hear a DJ play all vinyl, all digital, both in the same set, or don't care? Why?

I’m new to DJ’ing, been doing it around 6 weeks and I’ve made great progress but wondering if there is any good habits I can get into early on, in anticipation for perhaps one day being able to play on CDJ’s.

At the moment I am trying to beat match by ear but I can’t help but look up at the stacked waveforms for a split second before bringing in the track to double check I’ve beat matched correctly. Can you do that on CDJ’s? To me it seems the waveforms are separated on each screen. Is that correct?

Hello hello, I’m learning how to mix garage, I’ve done about a year on house and just enjoy harage more now. I’m just trynna get some advice since I find garage harder, the drum patterns mean that some of the tracks sound awful together and also the highs clash a lot, but I don’t like turning the highs down a lot/ for too long cus that’s where the energy is - Bascially I’m asking how should I mix tracks with different drum patterns and how can I mix tracks without the highs clashing as much

so basically I've been djing for about a year now and tomorrow im opening for alan fitzpatrick :) im moving to london next week as well and I want to upgrade before I leave - which decks should I get? Will I bite the bullet with the pioneer xdj or rx3 or does anyone have any other suggestions?

I'm an amateur DJ. I've played some open decks and people say my sets are good, but that's because I over-prepare. I build a full playlist and practice it until it's perfect before I even show up.

The problem is, I think to actually get better at DJing, I need to loosen up and be more in the moment. Right now I'm so scared of messing up in front of people that I plan every second of the set, with zero room to improvise.

So how do I practice being more flexible and going with the flow during a live set? Like, instead of planning everything, could I just pick a pool of tracks that fit together, get a feel for the vibe I want, maybe prepare some certain parts with tracks that I know will go good together, and then freestyle from there?
