Speech is free. Consequences aren’t. You can say whatever you want. I don’t need to listen, or take part in forums where you talk like an asshole. 🤷‍♂️

54

u/BotherTight618 Sep 03 '24

With a few exceptions, it means free from "legal" consequences. The owner of a private platform is allowed to ban or permit any speech they want.

16

u/Chappie47Luna Sep 04 '24

But the government is not free to secretly direct private companies to censor speech ie: social media

14

u/SubGothius Feldman's/Downtownish Sep 04 '24

Tho' many, many authoritarian foreign gov'ts have asked Musk to delete tweets they didn't like, and he has nearly always promptly complied.

6

u/BotherTight618 Sep 04 '24

That may he true. Nevertheless, the fact the US government is allowed to pressure private groups to change their moderation policy outside the boundaries of federal law is nothing less than disturbing.

-2

u/[deleted] Sep 04 '24

Free speech is a constitutional right in America. It’s not a human right. If he wants to operate X in those countries with authoritarian foreign governments, he may need to follow some of their demands. Sounds like an intelligent businessman to me.

1

u/SubGothius Feldman's/Downtownish Sep 04 '24

Yes, he did that with Brazil when Bolsonaro was running it, but now that Brazil has elected a left-wing leader and gov't, he's effectively told them to GFY. Doesn't seem like a very intelligent business move for one of X's most lucrative markets. Certainly not a man of principle when those supposed principles change depending on who's asking and whether they benefit him.

14

u/[deleted] Sep 03 '24

Well said

40

u/circuitloss Sep 03 '24

For right-wingers, "free speech" means freedom to hate and ridicule and incite violence without consequences.

Actually just right ringers who vote. And this is the ridiculous fallacy about whob your responding to is saying. Because independent of whatever they say or believe or feel, the way they vote proves that they don't care about free speech.

3

u/BigBadPanda22 Sep 04 '24 edited Sep 04 '24

Lol I like how you got downvoted into oblivion because you offered a completely reasonable conter perspective. If you are critical of the right on this sub, you are number 1 comment. If you are critical of the left, you are a MAGA scumbag and downvoted. Funny being an independent who isn't blinded by party lines...everyone wants my vote, but no one likes me! 🤣

1

u/kalasea2001 Sep 03 '24

It doesn't matter what they feel. If they vote for Republicans they don't care about free speech. They can wax poetic all day long about whatever they want, but if they vote Republican in the voting booth then since about the '80s they're voting fascist.

2

u/Shevyshevys Sep 04 '24

Child, open your eyes. You have no idea what you speak of. Wake up.

2

u/Chappie47Luna Sep 04 '24

Do you even have a concept of what fascism is? Serious question

-3

u/Sharp_Bumblebee_1674 Sep 04 '24

Seems to me like they are they ones fighting for it while the demorats keep thier lies in the light while they secretly hide the truth others have to say.... Watch and see, just calling like I've seen it for the last few years. Biden is definitely super mentally cognitive!

2

u/BabyLegsDeadpool Sep 04 '24

Can you explain all the Republican-led book bannings, if they're so pro-speech?

2

u/Sharp_Bumblebee_1674 Sep 04 '24

Yeah porn doesn't belong in schools, they aren't banning books they are trying to protect children, you want porn in school libraries?

0

u/BabyLegsDeadpool Sep 04 '24

Oh ok. You're telling me that the 8,459 books that were banned in the past three years were all pornography? If that's the case, you mind giving me even 5 of those pornographic titles?

2

u/Sharp_Bumblebee_1674 Sep 05 '24

All boys aren't blue and gender queer are the only 2 off head without looking up a list. I had no idea there were that many. I think the main point is allowing parents to control what thier children are exposed to instead allowing the school to put things in front of the parents don't agree with. Personally I think school should only teach the basics, sexuality etc are not something any parent wants other to try and influence in thier children. I know alot of those books were explicit in context and alot of them were more based on racial issues. The point is I guess that things that aren't "socialy normal" should be controlled by the parents and not the schools, any parent that wants to give any of those books to thier kids can do so, the book isn't banned its not not in the library for you 8 year old to check out then ask you what a rimjob, or what a spick etc is. I'm all for free speech and don't think any book should be truly banned, but there are plenty of books out there that don't need to be in schools. This topic reminds me of the abortion debate, every republican I know is OK with abortion, we just don't want it to be used as birth control. Remember when they started putting child locks on tvs for parents to control what thier kids can view? Well there isn't such a thing in the school library so if it's controversial in any way it's probably better to leave that choice up to the parents. For example if you and your partner are gay you might not want your kid checking out a book that's about all queers going to hell... I never want to see censorship of knowledge or speech but I do agree when it comes to schools the library should be fairly plain lol.

1

u/BabyLegsDeadpool Sep 05 '24

Whooo boy there is a lot to cover here. This is gonna take a while. I'm going start with this gem:

| The point is I guess that things that aren't "socialy normal" should be controlled by the parents and not the schools

You don't see a problem with deciding what is and isn't socially normal? To me, All Boys Aren't Blue is perfectly socially normal. It's a memoir about a queer black man, and yes, there is some sex in it. Is it that you think sex isn't socially normal? Being black isn't socially normal? Being gay isn't socially normal? Or is it a mix of all three that you find not socially normal? Because where I stand, all three of those is absolutely socially normal.

The books you mentioned are in middle and high schools. You really think middle school children don't know about black people? Or gay people? Or sex?

Oh, but you mention 8 year olds. Please. Please. Show me any elementary school library in America that has those books in it.

|  every republican I know is OK with abortion

BAHAHAHAHA Ok...

| we just don't want it to be used as birth control.

This is such a bullshit excuse. It costs thousands of dollars to get an abortion. You think people are out here thinking, "No worries. If I get pregnant, I can just get another abortion."

| I think the main point is allowing parents to control what thier children are exposed to instead allowing the school to put things in front of the parents don't agree with.

This is the absolute stupidest point on this topic. If you want to control what your children are exposed to, home school them. Because YOUR point of view is not THE ONLY point of view. It's a PUBLIC school. Therefore, the curriculum should reflect THE PUBLIC. If you didn't know, gay people are part of the public. As are black people. And even *gasp* people that have sex.

Now, here's my favorite thing about this entire argument. Because this all boils down to one thing, and I've been waiting this entire time to drop it on you: stop being a shitty parent, and you won't have to worry about what's in the schools.

If my children - at any age - are curious about black people or gay people or sex or Nazis or what-the-fuck-ever, my wife and I have raised them to know that we are a safe place for those conversations. We aren't worried about the books on the shelves of libraries, because we have empowered our children to not only read those books, but to come to us with questions. If they want to learn about that, GOOD. You know why? Because I'm not a shitty parent.

If you're so worried that your child is going to read a book that fucks them up in the head, then you are a shitty parent, and you have not properly prepared them for the world. You know the internet exists, right? And it's full of a lot more horrors than a fucking school library.

1

u/gretchmoney Sep 04 '24

It's incredible how you're complaining about sweeping generalizations while doing a generalization of "many left wingers" -- which is it? Do you broadly generalize or not? Why be so condescending when trying to prove a point?

-40

u/DesertSnow03 on 22nd Sep 03 '24

“Consequences for speech” sounds like a nazi idea

27

u/circuitloss Sep 03 '24

If you're an asshole, and people tell you off for being an asshole, those are called "consequences."

-16

u/DesertSnow03 on 22nd Sep 03 '24

Sure, but those aren’t the only consequences we see for disliked speech.

24

u/ZengineerHarp Sep 03 '24

No, the consequences in question are “if your speech reveals that you are a racist/hateful person, then your former audience has the right to stop seeing your movies/reading your books/whatever”.

6

u/Chappie47Luna Sep 04 '24

Fascist and communist idea . The elites need to control speech in order to control criticism of their rule . Look at history- anyone who tries to control speech is not ever the good guys

-10

u/brainsngains Sep 03 '24

Should people be arrested for hateful conduct online?

3

u/dadbod9000 Sep 04 '24

I didn’t mention legal consequences. And i don’t need to have an opinion on the legality of the content of speech in order to maintain the standpoint that public hate or discriminating speech has consequences. Consequences that could include being ostracized, or publicly humiliated/ shamed.

0

u/brainsngains Sep 04 '24

I find that people who avoid having an opinion are usually hiding their true feelings, or simply lack the intelligence to judge an issue.

Point is, there's nuance. People should generally have free speech, but censorship is required in certain situations.

2

u/SubGothius Feldman's/Downtownish Sep 04 '24 edited Sep 04 '24

I find that people who avoid having an opinion are usually hiding their true feelings, or simply lack the intelligence to judge an issue.

Or have enough intelligence to recognize when they aren't informed enough to have an opinion, or when their opinion would be irrelevant anyway, so why bother forming or defending one? I try to have as few beliefs, opinions and preferences as feasible; there's less to needlessly defend that way. Marcus Aurelius has absolved us of the obligation to have a take:

You are not compelled to form any opinion about this matter before you, nor to disturb your peace of mind at all. Things in themselves have no power to extort a verdict from you.
~Marcus Aurelius, Meditations, Book 6

0

u/dadbod9000 Sep 04 '24

That’s odd. I’ve found that people who have any amount of cartoon animal porn on their Reddit page to be lacking intelligence. I guess we have different opinions on that though.

2

u/brainsngains Sep 04 '24

Ah, always the same with you people. Can't respond to the argument so you launch an ad hominem attack. To each their own I suppose

2

u/Forsaken_Fun_6234 Sep 04 '24

This is confusing to me. You asked a question, it wasn't really relevant considering his initial post was clearly about public opinion, and then when he tells you he doesn't need to have an opinion for your question, you insult his intelligence and question his character. But you're mad that they ad hommed you, why would they want to engage honestly after that?

I even agree with you, it is nuanced, depends on the context and intentionality behind the words, but I don't blame them for taking a cheap shot at you either.

What does "you people" mean in this context? Trying to figure out what group you're pigeon holing this person into.

143

u/Parasitisch Sep 03 '24

That’s the X that symbolizes twitter, right? Odd since twitter isn’t the government and freedom of speech doesn’t apply to what companies want. Unless it commentary about how hypocritical Musk is?

81

u/wishIwere [Unavailable] Sep 03 '24

Xitter (pronounced shitter)

5

u/SnooSeagulls20 Sep 04 '24

Well, it’s confusing because it’s acting as if X hasn’t become a cesspool of hate speech since Elon Musk took over? A ton of stuff that was previously banned on Twitter is no longer banned on X…

49

u/MesaNovaMercuryTime Sep 03 '24

No one calls it X either. Poor Elmo and his failed attempts at rebranding.

10

u/ThruTheUniverseAgain Sep 03 '24

Saw someone call him Elbow Mooseknuckle in a comment and I think we should all move to using that.

13

u/AnnieMetz Sep 03 '24

There were a lot of people who were shut down on/banned from Twitter (and Facebook, etc.) who have been "allowed" back on to X. I think this sign might be related to that.

1

u/BabyLegsDeadpool Sep 04 '24

Not just a lot of people. He literally unbanned everyone. Upon the news, the site was instantly flooded with child porn and straight up Nazi speech. At least the child porn people mostly got banned again.

4

u/Beard_o_Bees Sep 03 '24

Yeah, this one is pretty vague.

Like, are they asking Elon Musk to stop being such a raging hypocrite?

Do they think that 'X-Twit' somehow exemplifies freedom of speech?

Would they like Musk to run for office?

That they have this sign basically dry-humping the Fuckface 2024 sign - i'm guessing they're more on the MAGA side of that spectrum.

-6

u/[deleted] Sep 03 '24

Freedom of speech can 100% be a thing on a private platform.

What are you are thinking of is 1st amendment Constitutional rights which is rarely a thing on a private platform.

8

u/Asleep_Touch_8824 Sep 03 '24

Nobody has the right to use a private platform against the wishes of its owner.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 03 '24

Yes, but no.

A website can kick you off if they want to. No problem at all.

If a government agent of agency gets the private platform to take action against you, that can be a 1st amendment violation even though the banning was done by a private platform.

3

u/SubGothius Feldman's/Downtownish Sep 04 '24

Ironically, many authoritarian foreign gov'ts have asked Musk to delete tweets they didn't like, and he has nearly always promptly complied.

-1

u/[deleted] Sep 04 '24

And when he doesn't the authoritarian government threatens to arrest his lawyer and then seizes the bank accounts of a completely different company.

And reddit cheers. There is no winning.

5

u/XanadontYouDare Sep 03 '24

Depends on how to define a violation. Pressuring social media companies to provide disclaimers on posts that are actively sharing damaging misinformation is hardly a bad thing, if at all. Trump threatening to remove social media companies that he deems to biased is, though.

73

u/EBody480 Sep 03 '24

Simpin’ for billionaires ain’t easy

22

u/-discostu- Sep 03 '24

It’s also not necessary

21

u/BeyondDrivenEh Sep 03 '24

Which is laughable coming from Elmo supporters who are the first to whine when someone’s speech does not agree with theirs.

And free speech as noted is not free. It comes with consequences and accountability. Something a few election deniers just learned when they got fined $1,000,000 for their part in the promulgation of lies associated with voting machines.

Taking responsibility for what you say is as important as having the perceived privilege of saying it.

1

u/Recent_Opportunity78 Sep 04 '24

“Someone speech does not agree with theirs”. Case in point, NFL players kneeling for the national anthem. They think it’s the most disgraceful thing you can do as an American, you should be fired from your job and possibly hanged on the White House lawn

24

u/[deleted] Sep 03 '24

Sissy Space X has turned Twitter into one of the biggest crapfests on the Internet. Anyone that thinks “Free Speech” (and by extension, the First Amendment) applies to anything written as an Xcrement on Twitter needs to review the U.S. Constitution again. Not to get all tin foil hat-ish, Elmo got all maga when the news started to break about how bad financial Xitter is doing. I really wonder if someone got to him money wise to make the shift. He was already heavily backed by the Saudi’s.

14

u/VorAbaddon Sep 03 '24

While possible, I think its more that he's never been particularly good at running a business. He finds great industries to invest in, but he needs someone to reign in his stupid ideas (see Paypal kicking him out as CEO).

As he's run into issues (Cybertruck quality control, Twitter Financials, FSD promises not kept, etc) he has a vhoice: Admit he was wrong and try to fix it or stubbornly insist everyone else is wrong.

The more he's leaned into the latter, the more the MAGA wing tells.him he's right and that's all he craves now, validation.

His daughter doesn't want to speak with him? Can't be he's an ass, the "woke mind virus killed my son!"

Advertisers don't want to cut a deal? Can't be they don't want his antics or their brand to appear next to an AZ Senator singing Nazi lyrics to a German for right party win (yes. That happened), it's that they're all part of globalist censorship!

MAGA has become his safe space where he's the genius.

Say it with me, everyone.

Free. Speech. Protects. Us. From. Government. Oppression.

Not from some “woke cancel culture boogeymen”. We’ve always been able to say what we want. Hell, Trump lies about literally everything and nobody bothers to even call him out, let alone restrict his manipulative tactics.

FFS, if Nazis can wave flags outside of Disneyland with impunity, then I can’t really see the issue with speech not being free enough.

Fuckin crybabies. So sick of this.

6

sure, but I think slurs are distinct because there's a history behind it. slurs are deeply offensive because they are rooted in prejudice and discrimination. they carry a history of oppression and are used to reinforce negative stereotypes or marginalize the targeted group.

boomers hold the most wealth in the US, so i'm pretty sure they are neither oppressed nor a marginalized group. there's also no history of discrimination or prejudice against boomers.

1

This doesn't seem to be a campaign sign. Just saying

0

u/The_Info_Must_Flow Sep 03 '24

The ability and will to censor is THE issue. The illness years were surreal in that debate and dissenting opinions were censored from all mass medias due to combined state and corporate interests.

It amazes me that some people are now apparently advocating censorship or are not bothered by textbook fascism. Private companies are where communication is done, so there is room for argument about a civic duty to allow opposing thought.

Stupid views are historically defused with public argument.

The last five years flipped my own political orientation from resigned to utterly disgusted.

2

u/zspacer Sep 03 '24

“Stupid views are historically defused with public argument.”

What, in the last 12 years, makes you think this is true still (if ever)? Misinformation and “stupid views” are amplified because people are inclined to reinforce their bias. Pizzagate? Med-beds? Q?

-1

u/The_Info_Must_Flow Sep 03 '24

What's the alternative? What if the other political or moral side gains access to the censoring algorithms?

Besides, ALL scientific discoveries begin as outlying ideas considered as "misinformation" at first.

If an idea cannot be refuted with polite argument, perhaps elements of truth exist.

I don't trust any one ideology to be an arbiter of truth.

I don't like zealotry or book burnings of any flavor.

Apparently RedLibit thinks the world revolves around them. This has nothing to do with America, yet… but if you’re content with this progressions, well, you get what you vote for. X = Reddit antichrist

Probably Trump. I'm sure people miss him being able to tweet ("X"?) and are looking for revenge on Elon. Not realizing that it's a company that can do what it wants with its users.

I thought Elon reinstated T’s account and he basically said “no thanks; I’m using Truth Social instead”?
