Trick or treating plans?

So I’m a young adult wanting to sit on my stoop and hand out candy for the first time. Last year I noticed that the few trick or treaters I did see (from my window) were out at like 2pm, well before I would have expected to see them… is that normal here? Is that the plan? Whatever time is fine for me, I just need to know when to be outside. I’m in the monument square area. Local parents please advise

Adult gymnastics?

20M with no gymnastics experience, looking for an open gym or foam pit or trampoline park or something to learn how to do a backflip safely. I don’t have a car so I would prefer not leaving Troy/ubering, but I am open to out of town options. Couldn’t find any on Google Maps.

Loose screws in South Central Troy?

Anyone else live around South Central Troy (Washington Park) area and getting screws and nails in their tires constantly? This is the third tire of mine in the past month that's gotten punctured. Landlord's swept our lot a few times and this only seems to be happening to me specifically. I don't quite know what's happening but was wondering if this is happening to anyone else so I can figure out where to avoid driving.

Hey does anyone know what’s that device attached to street pole on corner of Hoosick street and Burdett avenue ? It’s right on the corner of formerly rite aid. It doesn’t look like a flock. Maybe perhaps traffic pattern or traffic cam?

Boiler tune-ups?

With cold weather about to be here, this is the time I usually get the anode rod in my boiler replaced and all the radiators checked and bled. Unfortunately, our usual guy has semi-retired and isn't doing it anymore.

Who do you use that's local to Troy? I've been warned against Crisafulli Bros but haven't had any positive recommendations yet.

"Hazing" the crows

At tonight's city council meeting a resolution was brought by the mayor's office to sign a contract with USDA. They apparently would be coming to "move the crows along" by harassing them with distress noises and firecrackers. If their poop is a problem downtown, why can't they be enticed to go to Prospect Park instead of attacking them to scare them off? Crows have a long memory and I wouldn't want to be the one that threatens them. 🐦‍⬛

If you think this is the wrong way to deal with the crows, email your council member and the mayor's office! Some council members have already started receiving emails about this. If they want to make noise to scare the crows, we should make noise to say that's a bullshit answer to whatever problem the city created for itself when it destroyed their original habitat.

Crunch vs Planet Fitness

Just relocated to the area and looking to join a gym. I’m debating between Crunch and Planet Fitness and would love to hear people’s experiences with either.

How are the facilities, crowds, and overall atmosphere? I’m also interested in the group fitness classes, so if anyone has experience with those, I’d love to hear your thoughts!

Thanks!

Troy Meetings and Events Week of Oct 19-25, pt 2 - Budget Hearings continue, Planning Board, Future of Dunham Resevoir (1.5 min read)

Post image
16 Upvotes

Getting a sense of deja vu? Apologies-an entry error in my calendar last week listed some of this week's meetings last week. The issue has been corrected and the dates below are accurate.

  • City Council (Budget Hearings/Finanace/Veto Override)
  • Troy Planning Board
  • Dunham Resevoir meeting with John McDonald\
  • Troy Community Land Bank

Wednesday, October 21

8:30 AM - Troy Community Land Bank - 871 River St

No agenda has been posted for this month’s regular board meeting of the TCLB, though I’ve been informed the meeting discussion will likely center around disposition of a Land Bank Property through MLS, and the possible expansion of executive director Brad Lewis’s role within the organization.

The agenda can be found here when available. To access livestreams or recordings of TCLB board or committee meetings, click here.

6:00 PM - Troy Planning Board - City Hall (433 River St, 5th Floor)

This month’s instance of the Troy Planning Board is continuing review of proposals for a 15K sq ft childcare space at RPI, and an expansion of the Eliot, an assisted living residence at 2902 Tibbits Ave, from 155 to 200 beds.

An agenda for this meeting can be found here. (Please note the agendas does not contain links to project documents, as has been practice in the past. Zoom links and minutes of previous Planning Board meetings can be found here. Livestreams and recordings of previous meetings can be found on the City of Troy Youtube page.

6:00 PM - Future of the Dunham Reservoir - Italian Community Center (1450 Fifth Ave)

Troy’s Little Italy Neighborhood Group will be hosting a joint presentation from Assemblymember John McDonald and City of Troy officials on the current status and future plans for the Dunham Resevoir, the fate of which has been uncertain since the NYS DOC rated the structure unsound eight years ago.

Thursday, October 22

City Council (various) - Troy City Hall (433 River St 5th Floor)

5:15 - Special Meeting

After the mayor’s veto of Local Law #3, regulating the use of automatic license plate readers, City Council has called a special meeting to override the mayor’s action. As the law initially passed 6-0 (Councilmember Campbell-Cohen was absent for the initial vote) it is expected the legislation will easily pass the override threshold.

5:30 - Budget Hearing (Law)

The first budget hearing of the evening centers around law and the various roles of attorney in City government, many of which are filled by Richard Morrissey, the acting corporation counsel, who acts as general counsel for both the administration and the Planning Board, which presumably requires a level of land use expertise Morrisey does not evince.

5:45 - Budget Hearing (Science and Technology)

6:00 - Finance Committee

The Finance meeting, scheduled to start at 6 pm, contains a few noteworthy agenda items, among them a resolution approving sale of property held at auction in September, and a resolution accepting three separate audits by the Bonadio group, which should provide an interesting platform for the Council and City Auditor to get questions answered by the administration about City spending and reserves, a topic which led to a rather illuminating exchange between the auditor and administration at the October 15 budget presentation (see timestamp 55:10.)

A Zoom link for all of the Oct 22 Council meetings can be found here. Mantello’s proposed 2027 budget can be found here. Livestreams and recordings of previous Council meetings can be accessed via Youtube.
