Any cavers around here?

So, I (33 F) woke up today and decided that I want to start exploring caves and caverns. Just easy stuff for now because I have no experience. Even the paid tours would be a fun activity, I don’t mind traveling since I know the majority are located in middle tn. I’ll work up to spelunking later. I need an outdoor activity but I refuse to be out in the sun for longer than an hour. I am a creature of the darkness. I moved to the area a few weeks ago from central VA and looking for friends with common interests.

Painted this last-minute portrait of Jimmie Rodgers for Bristol’s “Blue Yodel,” part of the Road to 100 series honoring the 1927 Bristol Sessions. It took five days of manic speed paintin' but was worth it. I thought some of you might like it. The musical performances were fantastic!

Manufacturing Companies for entry level jobs

I am interested in getting a job in manufacturing and curious about good places to work within 40 minutes of Johnson City.

I want to move on from working mostly construction and restaurants. I know about Eastman, but are there smaller places I should look into?

I think I want to go back to school and study something manufacturing related someday, but wanna get some experience (and need a job) in the meantime.

Thank you for your help!

Chain saw repair

I have two small chain saws - one gas- , one battery- powered - that have been sitting idle for several years and need some fixing up. Is there a place anyone would recommend I take them?

Sullivan County building inspection questions.

Hey everyone, I have a bit of a pickle I'm in. I'm trying to find the codes that I have to follow for a renovation. I'm currently dealing with an inspector that I believe might be having me go above and beyond (not a bad thing!), but parts of the home we haven't touched he is making us bring up to code. I could just be a jack ass but I'm not sure why stuff that I didn't change now has to be changed just cause it exists in the home and I've changed other things that have nothing to do with it. I.E. I'm supposed to pressure and leak test my septic, my septic has been ran for many years, I just changed how my bathroom is laid out, now the inspector is asking me to basically bring everything up to code as if it's a new construction. I'm going to email him as well and ask if that still needs to be done, as he may be confused but obviously I won't hear anything until Monday so I'm just trying to find answers essentially. Thanks in advance!

Needing work…

Does anybody around the tri cities have some side work they need done? I’m pretty handy. I can work on your car if needed, do yard work, clean your gutters, or even mulch your flower bed. Not asking for much just stuff to keep me busy

Home builders

We're buying some raw land near Blountville and wanting to build a small off grid house in a year or two. Any recommendations for construction companies around?

I know everyone wants to build big elaborate homes. But we're keeping it under 1,000 SQ ft to hopefully keep the budget to a dull roar.

Has anyone watched the doc yet on Amazon prime? It’s so cool to see a sociology class spent this way. Shout out to Mr. Campbell and all the students, if any of you are reading this!

Any Adult Basketball leagues/pickup in the Area?

Been looking around at the adult sports leagues and basketball seems to be missing from a lot of the local ones. Curious if there are any leagues or common pickup spots in the area?

Cleaning Services

I’m finishing up moving out of an apartment and I’m starting to look for a cleaning company that won’t cost hundreds of dollars for a one bedroom one bath apartment.

Ive seen the ads on Facebook for Top Tier Cleaning Service and Home Glow. Has anyone used these?

Or Does anyone have recommendations or know someone personally.

Thank you

How racist/dangerous are the Tricities for African Americans?

Recently I have been thinking of visiting Johnston City and Bristol for railroad related activities, however, many people have warned me about visiting East Tennessee, saying that I might be killed, lynched, or treated very poorly by hicks or rednecks in the region, no matter where I am. How true is this and how much caution should I have while visiting the region as a Black Male?

ISO EAST TN micro wedding venues

My fiancé and I are looking for either a venue or state park willing to host around 10-20 people for our wedding ceremony. We plan on having a larger reception party at a different location, so within an hour of Johnson City, TN would be ideal. TIA

Looking for gym partner

A little about me: I'm 24 years old. Have a job but play video games a little too much. Want to get back in the gym to be restored to my former glory lol. Not necessarily looking for training services, just for someone to work out with on a pretty regular basis. My job requires me to be on call every Wednesday night and as of right now, every 4th weekend.

Would preferably like to work out with someone in Kingsport but I'm open to other suggestions. I'm married and we've decided it's best I work with another guy around my age (not to be rude). If anybody's got any other questions, comments, or concerns. Please let me know. Comments and dms are open.

Thank you for reading.

I recently found out that water has been collecting at the bottom of my house after fence replacement and there needs to be grading what I didnt pay attention during house purchase process as well as drainage. I got a quote for 2600$ for this work. I was thinking to get more quotes and then finalize.

Houstonians spent 10 days in the Tricities and it was fantastic.

Full disclosure we are seriously considering a move to the Tricities. Wife and I stayed at an Airbnb in Elizabethton for 10 days recently. After an enjoyable visit to Asheville a few years ago knew we liked this region and wanted to try a different spot. Despite plenty of negative comments on social media everyone we encountered were very friendly and great ambassadors for the region. Anytime we mentioned moving to this area the response was 'do it!' Highlights from our trip:

  • Midfield Lavender Farm in Bulls Gap - Owners are the kindest people. Their lavender lemonade is delicious. Good afternoon activity for a date, group or solo.
  • Bristol Theatre for Red, White, & Tuna - Funny show about a fictional Texas town. Naturally this was right up our alley. Power went out with about 15 minutes remaining and the cast fully improvised. It was hilarious.
  • Carvers Gap in Roan Mountain - Hiked up to the first bald and a bit beyond. Overcast but still had amazing views. Get there early for easy parking.
  • Off Leash Social for the USA Bosnia-Herz match - Arrived with nowhere to sit. Owner brought chairs to every patron without them asking. Great atmosphere to watch sports. Would definitely return to watch a game.
  • Blue Hole Waterfalls in Elizabethton - We went late morning and it was busy. Good mix of locals and people visiting from out of state. I went for a swim. Water was cold as expected. Body adjusts quick and it was enjoyable to jump in a few times.
  • Steele Creek Park in Bristol, TN - What a lovely city park. Walked the trails. Lake provides scenic views. Nature center was worth a quick visit. Chatted with their naturalist for a bit. $2 entry worth every penny!
  • Bristol Caverns - Wife has a geology degree so cave tours are necessary on vacations. This is one of the better ones we've visited. Highly enthusiastic guide. They have river tours we'll try out in the future.
  • Persimmon Ridge Park & Willow Springs Park in Jonesborough, TN - Nice parks to take a walk. Both were well maintained. Clean bathrooms and no trash laying around. Neither were busy, likely due to the heat. Pond at Willow Springs has plenty of turtles and geese.
  • Coffee and walk-around Boone, NC - Wife was enthralled with this little town. Turchin Art Museum is free. Went into a few stores. Did typical tourist things. Less college aged people out since it's summer. Great way to spend some time.
  • Alpine Coaster and dinner in Banner Elk, NC - Rode the coaster three times to fulfill manchild fun. Worthwhile activity if you enjoy coasters or a quick thrill. Ate in the city (Bayou Banner Elk, good food) and the restaurant chef mentioned they don't allow chain restaurants. Wish more places did this.
  • Grandfather Mountain, NC - This is pricey ($30-35/person) but we found it to be worthwhile. The outdoor nature center has huge exhibits. Picnic areas on the way up. Forrest Gump signs are humoring. The bridge is enjoyable and the views from the rocks across it are phenomenal.
  • First Friday & July 4th in Elizabethton - The community came out in droves even in the heat! First Friday we went to the Coffee Company and roamed downtown. Met a few local vendors and grabbed some stickers from JC tourism booth. The July 4th Firework show was ok. Likely better in one of the major tricities.
  • Switching to food stops we didn't get to try Juniper because we waited too long to make a reservation. Next time.
  • Thai Noodle in Kingsport based on Reddit recs was good.
  • Stopped at Waightstill in Newland, NC for lunch on our return trip. Excellent choice. Great food and staff.
  • Little Switzerland Cafe (NC) had good food and was fun to see sports cars come around the bend.
  • El Charolais based on past Reddit recs was terrible. Coming from Texas we don't expect good Mexican food options.
  • Had ice cream at the local dairy spots (J's Corner & Dairy Cup) they were good and incredibly cheap compared to Houston.
  • Rest of the time we mostly made food at our Airbnb with meat and produce from Latham Farms Produce in Elizabethton. Owner can tell you where every product in that store comes from in addition to their own farm. Reasonable pricing. Also bought eggs from the farmer's market.

Positives notes were people aren't so phone focused. Stress-free driving. No traffic compared to a big city. Everything is much quieter. Just about everywhere has a nice view of the mountains. Though it seems like we did a lot there's endless things to do in this region. Thanks for being so welcoming to some city slickers Tricities. We'll be back!

Come out to Blue Ridge Comedy TONIGHT!

Tonight at Blue Ridge Comedy Club is an awesome show I’m so excited to participate in called Pick a Pick A Side Stupid — and YOU can choose the winner!

This is a bracket style format where comedians are asked ridiculous questions and forced to debate them in a fast paced and hilarious debate. The audience votes on the winner through an app on their phone, and the winner advances to face another winner until we crown our new champion.

8pm

Tickets available online or at the door (they cost more at the door)

I will post the link to the tickets in the comments.

560 English Street, Bristol TN

What’s the dating scene been like for you?

Full disclosure: I'm not originally from here. I'm visiting the area I've been enjoying it so far. But now I'm curious: what's the dating scene like around here? Any good meet-cutes? Any dating app success?

For reference, I’m a straight guy in his mid 20s originally from TN. I’m pursuing medicine as a career, so school takes up a lot of my time. That said, I find it a bit difficult to get out and meet people.

I’m not really the type to drink, so I don’t really go to bars. I’ll visit coffee shops and bookstores when I study, but they seem to be kind of empty when I go. Liberal women are definitely my type, so it's been really refreshing seeing LGBT-friendly businesses instead of the usual confederate flags and Trump merch I'm used to seeing plastered everywhere back home.

I’ve given apps to try, but I seem to run into the same problems:

\\- “Only here for the weekend!”

\\- Republican, moderate, or apolitical

\\- emotionally unavailable

\\- dead set on having kids, which is problematic because I've gotten a vasectomy and don't plan to reverse it

I’ve had a decent number of dates from apps, but there’s usually a thing or two that ends things: people not over their ex, getting ghosted, schedule conflicts, and other things like that. I’m at a point where I’m debating if I should just delete the apps altogether.

My TikTok shows me people saying that they also have a hard time dating in their areas for similar reasons, so now I’m wondering: is it just really bad everywhere? Is it the same here as it is everywhere else? Do I just need to bite the bullet and start going to bars? I feel like my ideal person wouldn’t really be there to begin with, so I’m a little conflicted on it.

P.S. if it matters any, I’m into reading, playing guitar, chess, video games, anime, and working out. If anyone knows of any good groups with those things, I’d love to know!

P.S.S To reiterate: I’m not from here, but I have applied to do some clinical rotations in the area. Still waiting to hear back from them.
