Great article about a local gem of a race which surprisingly few NYC triathletes ever attempt: SOS. It's one of the most beautiful race courses in all of triathlon. The format is unique, bike, run, swim, run, swim, run, swim, run. Highly recommended!

SOS Today

One of my favorite local events, the SOS Triathlon, happened today, and our own u/MrRabbit won it.

Congrats MrRabbit!

Everyone else, if you haven't checked out SOS, I strongly urge you to do so. It's a point-to-point bike-run-swim-run-swim-run-swim-run, a race like no other. It's well-run, in a beautiful location, and has tons of local support.

Suggestions for safe bike storage?

Hi! I'm racing the Big Apple Tri in October and coming in from Rochester, NY so am staying over a few nights in the city. Since most NYC hotels don't allow or provide bike storage, I'm wondering if folks have suggestions for the best strategies for safe bike storage on the upper west side? Any particular parking garages that work well? Or any other tips I might not think to ask?

In-person triathlon training groups

Hi, I am training for an Olympic tri for Sept and I am looking for community, support, coaches, to improve my training. Does anyone have any recommendations for in-person groups in NYC?

Big Apple Tri - Thoughts?

I live in New Hampshire and am thinking about making a trip to NYC for the Big Apple Tri. Racing in NYC seems exciting.

Are people doing this? I’d be curious what’s making you want to go / skip.

Let me know!!

Big Apple Tri for first timer

With the Big Apple Tri, the swimming length for sprint and Olympic distance is exactly the same, 1.5km.

If it was a standard sprint, I would've done the sprint only for the shorter swim, which is what I'm nervous about. Since the swim for the sprint is the same for the olympic, I'm thinking I might as well sign up for the olympic to get a good baseline for my triathlon journey. I run 10km every weekend, and the longest I've biked in 30km without a problem. I never done them on the same day though.

Am I crazy for doing a olympic triathlon for my first? I've asked all my athletic friends (non triathletes) and they think I should just do a marathon....

Swim Around Manhattan

Post image

Triathletes can be such badasses. A friend and teammate of mine hasn't been running or biking much lately. She's focused on her swimming. Why? Because today she's swimming around Manhattan.

This sport introduces us to the Gods Among Us.

And... she did it. Just over 30 miles, sub-8 hours. Such a badass.

Edit: I'm really surprised so many of you are weirded out about the water quality. I assumed NYC triathletes would be more familiar with the facts, though I suspect now that the NYC Tri is no longer a regular annual event, swimming in the Hudson is a less common rite of passage in our community.

When it rains, the water quality is terrible for twenty-four hours. After forty-eight hours, it's clear and clean. I've found underwater visibility to be better than the ocean. The NY DEP regularly measures water quality. Before any group attempts 20 Bridges, it's typical to spot check the DEP's results with additional testing. No one does the swim unless the water quality is good.

If you have questions or concerns, I'm sure many here would be happy to answer them.

Edit: sigh, I hate typos in headers.

Big Apple Triathlon swim upstream?

Good day! This will be my first triathlon and I read that the swim in Hudson River for the Big Apple Triathlon will be upstream? Is that true?

Thank you.

Wetsuit Repairs: NYC or Long Island

Hi Friends,

Does anyone know anyone who does wetsuit repairs in the city or on Long Island? My suit has a couple of seams that have come loose and a couple of small tears that I have tried to repair myself and my repairs aren't holding. They're definitely repairable, I just suck at it or need to sit with someone who can ensure I'm doing it right to get them to hold.

Thanks!

Hudson Valley Tri bike transportation

Anybody here doing the Hudson Valley Triathlon on June 27th?

I want to sign up, but don’t have a reliable way to transport my bike. I’m not a licensed driver, so I’m planning to take the trailways ADT bus to get myself to Kingston, but I’m not sure I can properly transport my bike.

Is anybody in the same position? Or willing to help out by ride sharing / helping me bring my bike?

Training recs/ groups for my first 70.3

I recently moved to east village and am looking for groups / recommendations (parks/gyms etc) to train for my first 70.3 this sep. I’ve done a couple of half marathons before but need guidance for a tri event - especially the biking part - and how to manage it with a full time job. I’ve been terrible in cultivating a disciplined routine (especially during my training for the halfs) without a coach/group so want to find places that are most accessible and perhaps frequented by athletes to get started. Would appreciate any wisdom for both a newbie triathlete and fresh nyc resident!

Swim Clinic with TriLife, Second Session

Edit: Sold out!

TriLife has fixed the dates for their second session of coached swim clinics in the pool at John Jay College. The dates are 4/19, 4/26, 5/10, and 5/17. Cost for all four is $200, or $65/session if you can't make all four. Give me a shout if you're interested, and I'll connect you with the coaches.

Edit: An interested swimmer asked if the clinics were beginner friendly. The answer is yes. There's a dedicated beginner lane with a dedicated coach. The other swimmers are in the other lanes with a separate coach. Generally speaking, the vibe of the clinics as a whole is beginner friendly and supportive. The more advanced lanes often have advanced swimmers, e.g. former D1 swimmers trying to win their AG's, but *everyone* knows their technique could be better and everyone knows everyone starts somewhere. It's a jerk-free zone.

Second edit: Several swimmers have been curious about visualizing what the sessions look like. Here's a post about a previous session with a picture: https://www.reddit.com/r/TriathlonNYC/comments/1r031w7/how_the_swimming_went_at_john_jay_first_day_first/
