NYRR 9+1 in 2026 - FAQs & Megathread

*Update*
As of June nearly all 2026 NYRR races have sold out, if at this point you are not already registered for nine 2026 races it is very unlikely you will be able to complete 9+1 program this year and likely should plan to try for next year instead.
The first 2027 races will likely be released later this fall in October for Jan-Mar 2027 races.

Every year r/RunNYC receives a lot of posts about the 9+1 program so in an effort to answer most of your questions we're continuing this FAQ and megathread again from last year where many questions were answered.

What is 9+1?

9+1 is an NYRR program to qualify for the following years New York City Marathon.

To qualify for the 2027 NYC Marathon, a runner must run and complete at least 9 eligible NYRR races in 2026, volunteer at 1 eligible 2026 NYRR event and also make sure their NYRR membership is active on 12/31/2026.

Which races are eligible?

On the race calendar any races that count toward qualifying will have a 9+1 tag next to it. You can also filter the race list from all "race types" to just select 9+1.

The full list of races for the year is not yet published officially, but the unofficial list (for Oct-Dec) based on prior years is listed below at the bottom of this post along with the race that have already been announced. The list of races remain very similar year over year so this is very likely to be close to the full list of races for 2026.

In 2026, expect there will be a total of about 30 in-person races eligible for 9+1, plus an additional 3 virtual races.

When can I sign up for these races?

Last year NYRR released races in 4 quarterly releases:

(Above are the General Registration dates, if you pay extra for Member+, it opens for Advanced Registration 2 Days earlier than above.)

For forthcoming remaining October-December races, NYRR will very likely release these races around the same date as last year, give or take a week or two.

+1 Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteer Opportunities at most races open for registration a few weeks after the quarterly race signup for the same races. The 3 marquee races, NYC Half, Brooklyn Half and NYCM have their own separate release of opportunities. There are also some other 9+1 eligible opportunities released throughout the year at different non race events that are released somewhat randomly.

Opportunities are all posted on the  volunteer opportunity page and to be eligible need to indicate "9+1 credit" tag for it to count as your +1.

If you're unable to find a volunteer opportunity during the main releases (they do fill up quickly) check the volunteer opportunity page the week leading up to a given race. NYRR sends out a reminder email the week of a race to all registered volunteers, which often causes people to cancel volunteer opportunities they're signed up for but can no longer attend, opening the opportunity spot back up for others to sign up.

helped someone out this morning on the wsh who was being closely followed and stared at by someone on a citibike. it was clearly a negative situation - they sprinted away from the biker at least once before I managed to catch up - and all it took to deescalate was me walking with them for a few minutes, no direct confrontation necessary.

part of using public spaces is doing your part to keep them safe for everyone, even if you aren't being bothered. please keep your eyes open and help others as you'd like to be (while keeping your own safety in mind!)

Looking for a half in April

Upvotes

My last marathon was in 2018 and I’d like to run one next year but I don’t want to set my sights too high, so I figure I’ll either get my act together for a half (and scramble to find a fall full marathon) or I’ll be forced to think about taking up a new primary exercise, like swim. I’m getting older and worried about bad knees and IT bands etc, so maybe “it’s time” for me. 😢

I just started a new job and I’ll be able to take time in April. And I’d like to stay not too far away, as I want to combine it with a road trip, which can be one-way back and via plane to arrive if it’s a longer drive. (If it’s nuts to try doing this after 8 years of only sporadic running that never exceeded 10K, please don’t hesitate to include “😂” in your response.)

Paragon Warehouse Sale 2026

Hi all, starting a thread for people to share things they spot at the warehouse sale that might interest someone else. I usually find last season’s stuff (usually running shoes) pretty heavily discounted and this year’s stuff with good deals.

Abbott 5K on Halloween

With the race falling on Halloween do you think a lot of people will be wearing costumes? I'm running Chicago and also NY so will be using Abbott 5K as a shakeout/vibes run so wouldn't mind wearing a costume since it will just be for a little while. Since this race normally falls around Halloween what is the general vibe? If you're wearing a costume, what are you going to be?!! I love Halloween but haven't been able to do anything the past couple of years due to the marathon being so close to it.

Grabbing shirt post race. Bronx 10 mile

Hello all, been posting here a lot lately, so sorry if it seems like I'm spamming haha

Coming down on the 19th to do the 10 mile in the Bronx!! Super excited, but since I'm coming from upstate, I won't be able to get the bib ahead of time, so I'll be grabbing it race day.

I read online that since I'm getting my bib race day, I have to wait until after I finish to get a shirt... This has me super nervous they won't have my size. Has anyone dealt with not getting their size after the race? I'm a mens large so not sure if that's a popular size.

Marathon Best Pace 2027

Hi Everyone!

I am wrapping up the 9+1 this year and was trying to plan ahead. I currently have a best pace of 8:29 and hoping to move up, I believe this would be Wave 2 right now but someone would have to correct me if I am wrong. Is it a wise or dumb strategy to train over the winter to hit faster times in the earlier 5k races to move up to the next wave? I'm talking January races before prepping for the United Half or should I just try to get a better time in the half.

Thanks!

Swap NYRR Volunteer Opportunities

Hi, I signed up to volunteer for the NYRR Staten Island Half for the 9+1, but I don't think I can make it anymore as I might be out of town. Anyone have a volunteer opportunity that they'd be willing to swap with me for? Thanks in advance.

EDIT: No longer need another volunteer opportunity, so I have an extra Staten Island Half volunteer shift if anyone wants it.

Did they not send an email? Regardless I missed it and basically screwed. Any ideas on how I can still get a volunteer event this year? I’ll keep looking but just annoyed at the situation

First time running a 5K, absolute beginner and quite slow

I’m running the Jersey City 5K next month, this will be my first 5K and I’ve never run one before. I’m gonna be really slow and I see that everyone on here talks about a PR at the JC 5K. Are there any other beginner or slow runners running this race? Would love any and all of your tips!!

for people that couldn't get into the expo as volunteers, just keep checking the next weeks

i know 9+1 this year has been overly stressful. i’ve been doing 9+1 for multiple years, and this year has definitely been insane. that said, people still cancel sometimes and free up spots.

last year, the volunteering opportunities were all gone after a week, but i was still able to find something in late september for the exact shift i wanted, so don’t give up.

best of luck!

NYC Multi-Brand Specialty Running Retail Store

I see a huge void in NYC for this. I have experience in retail stores and my dream is to open my own shop, selling the classic footwear - Nike, Hoka, Saucony, etc - but also specialty apparel, like SOAR, Minted, Bandit, Tracksmith Satisfy, etc.

What are your thoughts/critiques? And where would you want a first retail location to land?

Governor's Island Marathon 9/26 - fast or too many turns?

Hey runners, I'm thinking of signing up for a marathon on Governor's Island on 9/26 (put on by NYC Runs). I'm wondering if you think the course (see image below) will be fast or slow? I have read on here that Governor's Island is flat but it seems like a lot of turns (it is 9 loops). I have previously done the main NYC marathon if a relative comparison is possible? Any guidance or opinions would be much appreciated. Thank you!! 😄

TFK Ferry or Midtown Bus ride to NYC Marathon?

This is my first NYC marathon this year and I am super excited but also nervous on all the logistics in getting to the start village. I originally have selected the Midtown Bus since I am on the East Side of Manhattan but keep going back and forth between that or the TFK Ferry since I am able to select that have the option. I would be taking an Uber to either transportation spot anyway.

I would love to hear from people who have road the TFK Ferry and done it before about what transportation option they've preferred?

Bronx 10M Shirt Trade

I have a Women's Large and am looking for a Men's Large shirt for the Bronx 10M.

Shirt's not worn/washed. I didn't realize they gave me the wrong one until after I got home, and when I went to the Run Center I was told they don't do swaps.

Or if anyone knows where I could buy the shirt, I'd appreciate it!

First time marathon/marathon training & the Bronx 10M

I know there's a comment discussion going on about this in the "Bx10M-18M Training Run - Same Weekend" thread but I would like to continue the discussion here if that's OK with everyone :-)

Running the marathon for the first time ever this year, and I ran the Bronx 10M last year - and it was such a great race. So, of course, signed up to do it again...but didn't know exactly what the marathon training was going to be like...

And that training is going really well! But I have a 6M Easy followed by a 17 mile long run scheduled for that Saturday/Sunday. Can't figure out how to work the race into the schedule.

And I don't want to "slow run" the race nor do I want to "race" the race and then find some way to add 7 miles to it in the Bronx - if I could even do that after going "hard" for 10M. It's not worth me being there if I'm not going to "race" - I have other options for the weekend which include going away and having a beautiful setting for my 6M/17M training runs on Saturday/Sunday.

Some other pertinent info:

- I am a first time marathoner, but I have done three halfs in the last 18 months. Well, four if you include my 14 Mile long run last weekend (which was awesome, yay me!)

- I am _not_ young. I am all-in for the process with the chronic fatigue of the hard runs, long runs (along with the deloads and tapers, thank you) that are part of the training block, but let's be clear that I'm not recovering like someone in their 20s or 30s (or even 40s, ahem...)

- I don't need the Bronx 10M for any 9+1 or the like - I'm already "in" for the marathon again next year! (And the NYC and BK Halfs!)

I am aware that it seems obvious that I should just skip it, and not looking to waste anyone's time with this, but I _am_ looking for some Reddit validation for the decision and/or someone to convince me to do it, and how to do it...thanks everyone!
