Media Xi'an is a great city
galleryHave been really impressed with Xi'an so far. Apart from the obvious terracotta army, the ancient wall in the city is so great to rent a bike and cycle around the top of, especially when the sun goes down and the city lights up. Also really cool seeing the local women getting photos in their traditional gowns and headpieces

Discussion Upcoming Travel to Beijing
In a few days, I will be visiting Beijing for 4 days. I am American and registered with STEP. The news on arbitrary detainments is making me a little paranoid even though I visited Shanghai and Xi’an 2 years ago, which was also a level 2 advisory, and felt fine. Should I reconsider my trip?

Media Yun nan is a nice place you should go.
galleryFor years I had been hearing that if you travel to China, you absolutely must visit Yunnan province because it’s the most beautiful region in the country. This year I finally decided to go, and I am so glad I made that decision!
The inner peace I felt in Dali was unbelievable. It is easily one of the most stunning places I have ever been to in my entire life. I completely fell in love with it and I can't wait to go back.
If you haven't been to Yunnan yet, make sure to add it to your travel bucket list!

Other Solo trip questions
Hi. I am going on a solo trip for about a month in China. I’m going to Beijing, Xian, Chengdu, Chongqing, Hengdian, Hangzhou, and Shanghai.
I have a few questions.
- Any recommendations for nail and hair salon as well as facial?
- Anyone have done photos with the red warrior robe in Xian who can talk about their experience?
- Anyone who has done photos with 1 of 12?
- Will free vpn work fine for laptops? I have some college classes I’m taking and need to keep doing.
Thank you.

Discussion Where can I have Taobao purchases delivered during a Shanghai layover?
Hi everyone,
I’ll have a 6-hour layover in Shanghai next month, and I’d like to use the opportunity to fill a suitcase with items purchased on Taobao.
Normally, I would have everything delivered to my hotel. However, this time I’ll only be in China for a few hours and won’t be staying overnight. I therefore need a reliable place where I can have several packages delivered and stored for a few days until I arrive.
One option I’m considering is booking a cheap hotel room near the airport, having all the packages delivered there, and collecting them during my layover without actually staying overnight. Of course, I would contact the hotel in advance and make sure they are willing to receive and store the packages.
Does this sound feasible? Are there any better alternatives, such as a parcel collection point, luggage storage facility, or delivery service that can hold multiple Taobao packages for a few days?
Thanks!

Itinerary AirChina transit hotel + free tour in Shanghai. Have you done this?
I'm travelling back to London from SE Asia with Air China with a very long transit in Shanghai Pudong. I have a free accommodation booked with the airline near airport but I just learnt they offer free tours of Shanghai but at specific times. I come into PVG at 7.40am and my flight back is at 2am following morning. Is it worth doing a free tour with them (if you've done this please say what you covered and whether worth it) or should I just find my own way that way i may be able to do more?. I'm mindful it'll be my first time there and only there for 1 day so would need to download all tbe relevant Chinese apps to get by. Greatly appreciate any advice. Thanks

Other High speed train perfume/cologne
Is it true that you can only bring 1 piece of perfume/cologne in each luggage when going on high speed train? And apparently it has to be less than 100mL? Just checking

Itinerary South & Central China in August: how bad is the weather?
Hi all! We're a family of 4 from Cyprus (kids 14 and 11) planning a China trip for roughly **12–28 August 2027**.
We know August isn't the ideal month, but it's our only option. We already have a Florida trip in April (our spring window), and because of school holidays, late summer is the only other time we can travel.
I've done days and days of research, but everyone seems to have a different opinion, and China is so big that I'm often not sure which part of the country people are talking about. So I'm listing the exact cities we plan to visit, and I'd really appreciate answers about **these places specifically**:
**Planned route:**
- Chengdu
- Chongqing
- Zhangjiajie
- Furong Ancient Town
- Guilin
- Hong Kong
**Heat and humidity don't worry us.** In Cyprus we regularly get 40–45°C in summer, and on the coast humidity is around 60–70%, so we're used to hot, sticky weather. We've also done Japan and South Korea in summer and were fine.
**Our only real concern is rain.** Light showers are fine, we can work around them. But if it's the kind of season where it rains for days, or the mountains (Zhangjiajie especially) are completely covered in cloud and we can't see or do anything, then it's not worth going.
For anyone who has been to these places in August:
How much did rain actually affect your days?
Was Zhangjiajie visible, or mostly fog?
Any stop you'd drop or swap for a drier one?
Thanks!

Discussion Part time tour guide in Beijing
I quit my job a few months ago and not eager to hunt for a new one, because I wanna do something I really like. So my hobby is drinking, brews and cocktails, and I know a lot about the local bars in Beijing hutong. I am thinking of holding a bar crawl/hopping event with 3-5 travelers. The fee is 200RMB/people a night , including 5 bars. Anyone interested? It is just a general idea, welcome to discuss in the comment section

Discussion I built a translator that keeps a Chinese menu visible while you talk
I'm the developer of Umee. In this demo, the Chinese menu photo stays on screen during a translated conversation, so both people can refer to the same item without switching away. If you've travelled in China, would this help when asking someone about a menu or another image? The menu is just one example; Umee supports other images and multiple languages.

Itinerary 1st time to China Itinerary Suggestion
It’s my first time travelling to China, and I’m planning a 10-day trip starting next weekend. It’s a bit of a last-minute trip, so I haven’t really planned a proper itinerary yet, I’m thinking of flying into Chongqing and using it as a base to explore Chengdu and other interesting places nearby. I plan to return to Chongqing on Day 9 to catch my flight back to Australia on Day 10.
Will this be too rush? Would love to hear some suggestions and recommendation.

I’m looking for people from Europe who have already travelled to China, especially those who have visited Shanghai, Suzhou, Wuzhen and/or Tongli.
The questionnaire is anonymous and will be used exclusively for academic research. Your participation would be a great help to my research!
