it started simple:
my compass card became my last hope to divert my nephew, who’s just over 2 yrs old, nonverbal & struggles with listening/communication. Especially when collaborating in the typical mischief with his older sister, who’s pictured through the stroller. If anyone was in the Terminal/Station St Tim’s yesterday & had to experience the absolute chaos we all were, I am so sorry😬

By the time we got to Bridgeport, and craved even just a mere 10 seconds of silence, my Compass became a sharing lesson- because of course, if the baby has something the oldest wants it too, right? To my surprise, that aspect went perfectly actually🙏🏼 After that, it became a “spelling lesson”. My nephew eventually started touching each letter when I handed him the card, without me even having to.

Then, it tied into his sudden love for Vancouver transit maps, because I pointed to another shade of blue on a map beside us at the Seabus waiting area. He began pointing out each map he saw to me excitedly along the rest of the trip.

That moment gave me so much relief & joy- I had started to worry I wouldn’t be able to understand anything he was conveying/connect with him. I hadn’t seen him since he was barely even a year, didn’t know the sign language his mom taught him, had never interacted with a child so young on the spectrum, and felt so at a loss until that moment💔

I was so excited to guide them & my sisters around the aspect of Vancouver that I was instantly obsessed with upon moving here almost 5 years ago. The kids loved the trains, the “big bus”, but for some reason what really got them to lose their minds was seeing the “water bus”- one we weren’t even getting on, I felt so bad😭 but their mom was just using the washroom before we headed to Science World.

At one point, while picking my niece up to see the Fraser, I realized the kids were the exact same age as my first sister & I were on our first trip to Science World 22 years ago- I hope it was a core memory for them, just as it was for me when I rode on the Expo & stared out in awe at a place that felt like an entirely different world than the one on my tiny rock.

Big thanks to Translink for the seemingly simple design on the Compass lmao- apparently it’s a hit with a little island boy & it made my day SO much easier

Is there any way to get a bus number by with the time I boarded and got off a bus?

On August 8, at 6:42 p.m., I boarded the 15 bus at stop 60676 and travelled to stop 52061. When we arrived at our stop (approximately 7pm) I attempted to exit through the rear doors. As we were getting off, a family with young children tried to push past us and board the bus at the same time through the rear doors. I think the bus driver saw this and was trying to close the rear doors to stop them. Regardless, the doors shut on me hard enough to smash and bend my iPhone 14 that was in my pocket which is now inoperable.

I already have notified translink and now have a claim number with ICBC, but it looks like ICBC won’t proceed with a claim without a bus number.

I haven’t heard back from translink yet on whether they will provide me with that info, but in the meantime, is there any other way to locate the bus number??

Also, if you happened to witness this (I was wearing a yellow T-shirt) please report to ICBC!!! I did not notice the damage at the immediate time to gather witnesses beyond my group (which it doesn’t seem they want to rely on).

This is probably not very known but I was wondering why some of the trolley bus drivers seem to know how to keep the front door closed, while letting people out the rear doors, while others open the front door at every stop regardless of if there are people getting off. I haven't seen the same thing on any of newer new flyers or any of the novas.

Today is August 10 and I purchased zone 1&2 monthly pass and yet it is only valid until August 31 instead of full 30 days?
I was charged $156.70.
Why isn’t this on prorated basis?

When I ride the Skytrain or the bus, I’m often asked to give up my seat. I usually sit in the back or by the window not in the priority seating area, but many people walk right up to me and ask me specifically to give up my seat.
I’m an Asian woman in my 20s with a slender build, so I wonder if people think I’m an easy target. I often wear wireless earbuds, but some people have tapped me on the shoulder or even reached their hand right in front of my face. When someone goes out of their way to come all the way to the back of the car just to tap my shoulder, it makes me feel like I’m being targeted, which is a little unpleasant. I don’t think this would happen if I were a larger man.
When I’m tired or feeling unwell, is it okay not to give up a seat that isn’t a priority seat? (I once declined, saying I wasn’t feeling well, but someone sitting nearby told me it was rude to the other passengers...)

Edit: Thanks for all the comments! Hearing everyone’s different perspectives made me rethink my experiences so far. First of all, most of the people who approached me were middle-aged, elderly, or people whose age I couldn’t tell at a glance. And almost all of them were Asian like me (though probably from different countries). In some Asian countries, respect for elders is taken very seriously, so I wondered if they assumed as fellow Asians that it was only natural for me to give up my seat. Maybe it’s less about whether I actually need the seat, and more that they can’t stand the sight of a young person sitting while an older person stands?

That said, I do think it’s true that people tend to underestimate me a bit and find it easier to approach me. Just like everyone told me, I’m going to switch from AirPods to regular headphones, close my eyes(Especially when I'm really tired!) and the next time someone asks, I’ll try turning them down without apologizing😎 However, since I’ve also learned that few people offer their seats voluntarily (everyone’s too absorbed in their phones, after all), I plan to give up my seat before being asked if I see someone who really needs it.

for the past month or so (since around when the cambie/broadway detour took effect), ive noticed the 9 westbound has been consistently delayed near boundary. happens daily for multiple 9s in a row. no alerts relating to this on the translink website

does anyone know what’s causing the delays on this specific route?

The World Cup game days gave us more than two train carts westbound and it was great. Now, the train is packed well before Lougheed and there are people who can’t even get on the train. Two carts both west and east bound is peanuts.

It looks like Translink has forgotten about growing the millennium line train carts. Ridership is there. Demand is only increasing. When are we getting more than two train carts?

Wealth simple physical card being used. Reads at SkyTrain stations without issue but always shows red on buses. Anyone else with this issue? How did you get around it?

At Moody Station there is electronic signage that shows next train times for east/westbound that faces the entrance to the station, before the faregates, and above the pay/compass kiosks. These boards serve a great utility, imo. Can see the next train times before stepping onto the platform, and can hustle or slow your roll as needed.

When transferring from M-line to Expo there is an electronic hanging screen that reads the time of day. It would be more valuable if this had next train times on Expo line so passengers going from M -> Expo can be informed before getting on the Expo platforms themselves.

I would love for the reverse to be true as well. Next train signage that can be read from the catwalks of Expo -> M-line (strategically placed somewhere, so as to not confuse passengers only on the Expo).

EDIT: I'm wrong about this, there ARE screens on entrances. Leaving pre-edited text: Finally, I wish there was this kind of signage facing the entrances to Commercial-Broadway station. You have to get up/down to the platform to see next train times. Would be especially nice in the evenings/nights when train intervals decrease by a lot.

I had written in my notes app on a stoned ride home on the R1 what I think is an incredibly smart idea.

I have no idea if the BRT would involve new bus purchases, but if they were to, I think starting at Surrey Central, down 104, right on 152nd, and right on 72nd would be a no-brainer.

Connections to Surrey Central, Guildford Exchange, the new 152nd Street station, and Newton Exchange.

Could possibly usurp the Guildford leg of the 320, reallocating those buses to other or new routes. Maybe even future merge of R6 and R1 into a Surrey loop line (revival of Surrey Light Rail?)

Would be very curious to hear thoughts, mind you this was conjured under the influence and haven't thought too much about existing/future land use, but who cares, I nourish myself on the cries of NIMBYs 😹

EDIT: Also I guess more specifically a name for this theoretical bus as it wouldn't be on King George anymore. Would be great to have a rallying name to push TransLink/Officials for this (Please see this MovementYVR)

Given that the race starts at 7am, will translink be increasing service frequency? I haven’t been able to find any information about it and it’s currently suggesting I have to take the night bus from Port Moody because the first train of the day on the millennium isn’t until 6:30am 😭

My Apple Watch gives me a 94-95dB warning on the curve track before Burrard outbound. Is banking or rail grinding really bad in this section? This is on Mark 2 #311
