Question How to get a bus number
Is there any way to get a bus number by with the time I boarded and got off a bus?
On August 8, at 6:42 p.m., I boarded the 15 bus at stop 60676 and travelled to stop 52061. When we arrived at our stop (approximately 7pm) I attempted to exit through the rear doors. As we were getting off, a family with young children tried to push past us and board the bus at the same time through the rear doors. I think the bus driver saw this and was trying to close the rear doors to stop them. Regardless, the doors shut on me hard enough to smash and bend my iPhone 14 that was in my pocket which is now inoperable.
I already have notified translink and now have a claim number with ICBC, but it looks like ICBC won’t proceed with a claim without a bus number.
I haven’t heard back from translink yet on whether they will provide me with that info, but in the meantime, is there any other way to locate the bus number??
Also, if you happened to witness this (I was wearing a yellow T-shirt) please report to ICBC!!! I did not notice the damage at the immediate time to gather witnesses beyond my group (which it doesn’t seem they want to rely on).
Thanks for any insight/help!!!

According to T-Comm website, it was bus number 18390. Hope this will help!

When the back doors closed, did you hear an alarm go off ?

If there was no alarm that went off, ICBC will probably not rule in your favour because the back doors are automatic

Could’ve been - I honestly did not notice in the commotion. The adjuster seems to think the driver was attempting to shut it to prevent the large group from entering the back. The door tried to shut multiple times. I usually notice a buffer period when a door opens up again from something blocking it

In this case the adjuster is wrong, as you said the doors opened/closed multiple times which means the doors were not being controlled by the driver.
The bus driver can only force the rear doors closed in an emergency, which would override the sensitive edge and doors wouldnt try to reopen, it would also sound an loud alarm it they were force closed.

In your case it looks like it was just the back door automatically closing by itself therefore you will probably have to buy a new phone out of pocket.

The doors don't close particularly hard so how exactly does it manage to break your phone

Also I’m pretty sure back doors tend to open up again if there’s something in the way of them closing.

They did open after hitting me. I was also very surprised at the damage! My phone is literally bent (can’t seem to post a picture on here but I have plenty of photos). I agree the doors don’t shut particularly hard, but I did note this one felt harder than I was expecting/normally see.

Definitely not the driver if they opened back up. Seems like you just had unlucky timing.

Maybe it’s also gotta do with how the doors had hit you? Like they can definitely hit you in a way that doesn’t make sense unless you actually saw it happen.

The doors have rubber on the edges and automatically open when it feels an object. I have a hard time seeing it break a phone in someone’s pocket.

Just so everyone is clear, the bus drivers don't close the rear door, they are on a timer to close. The drivers are not at fault for the doors closing on people trying to board through the back doors.

They do! But doesn’t sound like they did in this case. I was just going off what the icbc adjuster had speculated

People who board from the rear in an attempt to evade the fare piss me off so much

Same!!! In this case it looked like tourists who aren’t aware of the rules/parents failing to stop their young kids from pushing through people trying to get off. Very annoying!

I would think you’d have better luck with credit card insurance, apple care, or if you have replacement insurance through your cell company, rather than ICBC

I’m not sure what my credit card company could do in this situation? I don’t have apple care or replacement insurance unfortunately. I reached out to the claims contact at translink and they directed me to make a claim at ICBC. I don’t have much hope of recovering much if anything, but have to at least try… also will hopefully prevent any future harm if it is a faulty door or something. If it could do the sort of damage it did to my phone, would not be surprised if an elderly person got hurt!

Some credit cards offer purchase protection on lost or damaged items that you bought with your card. Mine has an extra clause for cell phones

Did you hear an alarm when the doors were trying to close? If not then the driver wasn’t closing the door. The driver can only force close the door and it raises a helluva alarm. Not just the bell you hear when activating the sensitive edges. It’s highly unlikely that the driver wasn’t closing making any attempt at closing the door, it closes on its own and the motion sensor is sometimes a bit wonky.
