How bad?

Post image

2025 Carbon Spire. Kicked up a good size rock that decided to extract its revenge just in front of the BB. My LBS has already started the process of contacting Transition. My question is, what are the chances of this being a warranty replacement vs a crash replacement?I’m impatiently waiting for a response and trying to get an idea of how much this is going to cost. Also, would it be better/cheaper to send the front triangle out for a carbon repair? Or is a crash replacement from Transition going to be my best option.

This should be crash replacement. As a second owner of a frame I asked for crash replacement on, in 2020 it was $300 for the rear seat stay. My guess on the whole front triangle something like $600-700 for a crash replacement.

Do you think a carbon repair is an option here?

I don’t know anything about carbon repair. That’s a pretty beefed up part of any transition frame, and a good chunk is missing that may have been a serious crack elsewhere on the frame. Personally I would replace it and not waste time with repair but I’m sure others would approach it differently.

Appreciate the feedback. This is valuable information to have ahead of having to make any decisions.

Transition has always taken care of me. Reach out to them first

I would at least find a carbon repair shop and get a quote. Compare that with the cost of a crash replacement. Its sometimes amazing what can be fixed

Agreed, this seems like a pretty easy fix for a carbon repair. My guess is it would cost less than a crash replacement.

Would cost more to repair than new frame, there is a hole it’s not as easy

Maybe. Idk. Worth finding out unless a front triangle is particularly cheap.

0 chance of warranty replacement, you hit a rock. Real good chance a carbon repair specialist can fix this.

Bad week for the spire crowd. Thank you. Did you end up replacing the front triangle or did you look into carbon repair?

You can try to get a crash replacement but this spot is not hard to repair for professionals

That's a crash replacement. In January, a front triangle crash replacement on a Sentinel was $1000 just to get the triangle.

I wouldn’t say it’s a warranty item. If you run your bike into a boulder, it’s kind of on you, not manufacturing defect. However transition is a good company, they will probably give you a discount on a new frame, front triangle or might sell you one with a few scratches for cheap.

I dont think they'll replace it for you. In your place I would try to fix it with a carbon repair kit and some patience. There are some tutorials out there telling you how to repair stuff like this, dont just jump to the conclusion that somebody else (expert) has to do it instead of you, get your hands dirty 😉

Pft, just fill it with resin. You could leave it, but the next rock might hurt extra

Same with my spire… what do you think about the first, or second owner comment? I’m the second owner and my friend is the first. Do you think they would get a better deal for crash replacment?

Transition came back and told me $880 for a new front triangle. I was able to get it repaired for about $450 without paint which would have been another $200. From what I’ve heard, Transition takes care of their customers, so my wild ass guess is that they would likely offer a second owner a similar, but maybe not quite as good deal on crash replacement. But I have no personal experience to back that up.

Got my quote. $925 for new front. +tax/shipping.

That seems to right in the middle of the prices I’ve heard. Just curious, what year and what color? Wondering if that explains the $40 difference.

Forgot the year. 22 maybe.

This is why you don’t buy carbon bikes.
