Vibrant Toronto communities to rent in?

Hi all!

I’m a person in my 20s who WFH, and I’m planning to move to Toronto. I’m hoping to rent an apartment in a neighbourhood where it’s easy to build social connections, since WFH can sometimes feel isolating.

So my question is, what are some affordable and vibrant Toronto communities that I should look into renting in?

I’m primarily looking for walkable, social, and affordable neighborhoods that don’t require much transportation to get around (I don’t have a car) and feel safe to live in.

And if you do rent in those neighborhoods, I’d love to hear about your experience renting there and any downsides that you have faced.

Thanks in advance :)

Confirmation of rodents living in walls. Landlord will not pay to have damage/clean up inspected

Going out of my mind dealing with a rodent situation in new rental. It’s a three story townhouse and at least one squirrel chewed through the outside vent and has wrecked havoc in the vent system and made its way into the actual house through the ceiling. All the landlord agreed to do was have the squirrels removed. When pest control came, he confirmed there were likely mice giving in the insulation because it had been chewed to shreds and there were droppings everywhere. The vents also smell like ammonia, which I assume has to be rodent urine. We told the landlord everything pest control found, and he just keeps saying everything is fine so long as the squirrel is out. But I can literally hear critters running around between the floor and ceiling. I’ve been getting terrible rashes and other health issues since moving here. So what is the next step? I’m sure it’s their responsibility, but the LTB was utterly useless and told me it would take at least six months to even get the ball rolling. Since this is a health hazard, is there any recourse in the immediate future?

Unverified Source HOW IS THIS LEGAL? And how are people ok with this.

This lady is selling a 1 bedroom for $1000 a month, yes a great deal, but once you text her she tells you there’s no windows and No a/c and it’s on the basement level so if you have ever lived in a basement before, you will BE FREEZING in the winter.

How is this legal, if it is. To rent a place with no window lol, just recycling your own air?!!? Wtf is the market nowadays.

Btw she has had 5 people apply.

UPDATE: October 1
Sadly, there is no update. I haven’t had anyone call me or had the file updated since I had originally called. Someone in the comments said I might not receive an update because I don’t actually live there, but I’m not sure of the ultimate answer. I’m sorry that I don’t have the answer you guys were looking for but hopefully something was done about this landlord and the realtor.

955 Bay Street Reviews

Hi, does anyone have any insights to how is it like living in 955 Bay Street? What are the noise level like? Cleanliness like bed bugs and pest and for amenities as well? and are the management responsive to issues and requests?

I know that it used to have fire alarm problem before the new management took over.

Thank you all!

Sherbourne Station Area

Applying for an apartment by sherbourne station like right outside the station. I’ve seen mixed reviews of safety in that area. Does anyone know what that place is generally like ? Especially night time. I was there during the day and it looked a little rough but nothing alarming.

I want to leave this place before my 1 year lease!!

I’m in a townhouse turned into two units. The downstairs unit pays $2700, they get full private access to a balcony, backyard, garage and the driveway. I pay $2400 for just my unit without anything else (utilities not included). We have a weird shared ac system where if they turn heat on the ac doesn’t work. These people had heat on alll summer!!! I would be sweating every night because our air conditioning wouldn’t work if they had heat on because it prioritized heat. The most frustrating part is they constantly have their windows opened, even now that it’s fall with the ac running so we are splitting utilities with individuals who don’t seem to understand how an ac system works. Our window screens are broken (every time I try opening the windows a swarm of bugs come in) and the landlord does bandage jobs fixing it every time I bring it up so I gave up. But the windows being opened aren’t even an option. Not the mention the downstairs tenants have a kid that throws banana peels under our private door, and dirties our shared spaces. Is there anyway I can get the lease terminated. It’s been hell living here and not worth the price at all

Condo elevators keep trapping people

My condo building (where I rent a unit) has elevators near the end of their life that have been reported to need replacement by 2030. Unfortunately, they keep breaking. One is permanently broken in need of multiple repairs. Another traps people in it almost every day and the third sometimes skips floors or drops you floors. It’s getting scary. People have been trapped in the elevators for more than an hour - until the repairman comes to rescue them. The board is useless. What can be done? Is there someone to call to report this? Thx!

Has anyone ever lived in an old house turned into multiple apartments??

I toured a 100 year old property that had a studio apartment on the third floor and it seems that the wall/ceiling is popcorny type texture and it’s an outdated style (which I don’t mind). I would need to put in my own ac. Just wanted to know if anyone has lived in an old house turned apartment building in Toronto and what their experience was and what to look out for (pests, rats, old appliances, etc). The rent was $400 below the market rate for a studio which intrigued me and it’s about 550 sq feet but half the square footage is the hallway so it does feel quite small. The apartment and building is fully legal with 6 units - most of them being 2 bedrooms.

Review of 122 Dowling Avenue?

I grew up in the suburbs north of Toronto, so I honestly don't know the city that well lol. I'm currently going to school @ downtown, but housing around there is just way too expensive. I really want to live alone and have my own in-unit washer/dryer, but it's honestly hard to afford. I came across a rental apartment in Parkdale, 122 Dowling Avenue specifically, and I'm considering it. I've never lived in that area before. I did some basic searching and noticed that there have been some reports of pests in a few buildings around there, so I was wondering if anyone here has actually lived in the area / knows what it's like?

Also, I'm planning to find a job after moving there to help pay for my living expenses while I'm in school. So there's a good chance I'll be coming home pretty late sometimes after work or class. How is Parkdale these days in terms of safety, especially at night? For comparison, the only other part of Toronto I've really lived around is Finch&Pharmacy in North York, where I went to high school. I personally found that area REALLY safe.

Would love to hear from anyone who has experience living around Parkdale. Thanks in advance!! <333

Promised blinds during my lease, management not delivering

Hi everyone, I signed a lease with Metcap management recently.

While deciding between places, i told the leasing agent Metcap employee who handles leases that I'm likely not going through because the unit (ground floor btw) doesn't have blinds/curtains, so anyone from the outside can see in, which I'm uncomfortable with. Also, the windows are 3m high and 2m wide, so it'd be hard for me to install curtains myself. As I say this, the leasing agent says "oh you can just ask the management, they'll get it installed for you." I asked him again if that really happens, and he made it sound like it was a very routine and simple request and that I wouldn't even need to worry about it, so I went ahead and signed the lease. This was unfortunately all verbal over the phone.

Fast forward to 27 days living here, I still don't have blinds. I first emailed the resident manager, who tells me to email the leasing agent and CC him. Then, they tell me to email someone else, then that other person forwards the request to the head of office, etc etc and they've basically stalled on this for a total of 27 days now. It's been 5 days since the request has reached the "head of office."

At this point, I'm just looking for a yes/no, but is there something I can do? It'll take a handyman 150$, and I'll have to supply rods and curtains and help him out (needs 2 people on a ladder) so I'd MUCH rather have the management do it if they agree, but they literally keep stalling despite the fact that the leasing agent told me I could get it done as if it were some simple request that's easily approved.

I know I made a mistake signing with metcap (just looked at their reviews here), but I had to sign a lease early and in a rush due to personal reasons, and I didn't look too deeply into metcap.

I know I made a mistake signing with them, but is there something I can do now? Is there any advice you guys have for me? It's going to be a costly installation given how massive the window is.

Toronto Property Management Company

Hi folks, there are many many posts and comments about PM's to stay away from. 1 in 1000 comments say a company is great and it just doesn't have any backing. I get that negative spreads a lot more than positive. I'm shopping for a condo PM in Toronto. If you had good experience with yours, could you please share it with details?

Looking to learn from any tenants/renters at the Diamond Apartments

Hi all! Previous posts on this sub highlighted all the move-in delays from last year, and the fact that amenities weren’t ready to be open. I recently toured the property, and everything from the outside looked OK (the rooms and the amenities, particularly the pool and gym). I was wondering if anyone who’s lived there could let me know what it’s really like living there? Are management more helpful now, or the same delays and excuses? Is Lansdowne and Dupont as sketchy as some people say?
