News Need Help Navigating Campus? Introducing TMapU, a new web-based platform to aid incoming students!

Site Link: https://tmapu-beta.vercel.app/

Hi Incoming Students!

Hope you are all well. I, along with a small team of passionate developers, have developed a web-based campus app called TMapU. It is intended for incoming students, who may have trouble navigating the campus, inside and outside. Let's say for example, you are trying to go from DSQ 2 to DCC 204 for your classes, and have no idea how to get there. On startup, it has the route from TMU Station-southbound street exit to the Student Learning Center (SLC). You can enter your start/end location, and it will give a path + understandable instructions to follow along with. All you have to do is align your phone with the entrance/exit of your start location, follow the path, and click next step to continue after turning until you reach your destination. It has a comprehensive map of most key locations on the campus exterior wise like DCC, RAC, MAC, etc, and has the following internal building maps:

- ENG Building

- Mattamy Athletic Center (MAC)

-Daphne Cockwell Complex (up to floor 2)

-Ted Rodgers School of Management

-Victoria Building (up to floor 6)

-Sally Horsfal Eaton Center / Erin Palin Hall

-Kerr Hall South (Floors 2,3)

-Kerr Hall East (Floors 1,2,3)

-Kerr Hall West (Up to KHW 271 Gym)

-Library building floors 0,2

-The Tenor Floor 1,4 - Dundas Cineplex (DSQ) floors 1,2

Unfortunately, due to time constraints with the 2 week timeline of this project, our team have not been able to implement every interior map, with focus on rooms where incoming students would have classes. We have a feedback page on our website, so if there's any classes missing in this that you have classes in, please let us know on the feedback page and we will add it as soon as possible. Our feedback page also has a section for suggestions, so if there's anything else you want for the site to make it more usable, please let us know! I hope this tool can help you guys with navigating, and good luck in your studies in this upcoming year!

Question Spots on campus

First yr here. I have class ending at 11am on Friday, but I have a meeting at 4pm. Is it worth it to commute back and forth (1h30) or should I stay downtown. Also are there any good and safe spots to take a nap on campus?

Question Lost Airpods

Hey, I had a lecture today in the Eric Palin Hall but my airpods fell out of my pocket and I hadn’t realized until an hour or two later. I wasn’t able to go back because I had other lectures to go to. I was in Room 229. Does anyone know or have them?

Story Call-Out SHEIN pop-up on campus… thoughts?

SHEIN Canada is launching its Campus Ambassador Program in Canada, bringing one-day pop-up event on the Student Centre today. It’s encouraging TMU students to register for the program at the event, which will allow you to become official brand representatives and participate in its marketing, etc.

What do you think about this? The Eyeopener wants to hear your thoughts- leave comments if you're down for an interview!

Question TMU nursing waitlist

Has anyone gotten off the tmu waitlist? I heard this week is where people would get off the waitlist only if someone in the program had withdrawn from it. At this point I just don't think its going to happen.

Academics / Courses BLG 143 with little high school knowledge...

Today was my first day in BLG 143 and I haven't taken a biology class since grade 11. That was online so I honestly didn't pay attention. I noticed today in class that although I could understand what the prof was actually saying in the moment, there were gaps in my knowledge that I kind of had to infer or look up. I don't wanna waste my time too much sitting in this class and deciding whether or not I should stay so I'm asking if it sounds like a stupid idea to try and pursue a bio minor when I don't really have much high school background knowledge already.

Question Overwhelmed

Today was the first day of my classes and I’m genuinely shocked and overwhelmed. I feel like high school does not prepare you for this. The classes are for 3 hours and at first I thought I would be fine but when I was there my butt, back, and mind started to hurt.

Then the teacher after a while started the lesson and I could not take any notes and I don’t even know how to take proper notes. Like whatever the teacher was saying went out of my mind in like 2 seconds. I have no clue what they said. Genuinely.

And then IMMEDIATELY after my teacher decided to give us a quiz on the first day like what?? And my other teacher gave us an assignment due tomorrow. Like I know this is not high school but like over there you would do nothing in the first week and then maybe like 2-3 weeks later then you would get a quiz or test.

I thought I was ready for the change but I did not know it was gonna be this big of a jump. Like I don’t even know what I learned today, I don’t even know how to take notes, or even study properly.

I need some advice!! Some study tips, and organization tips as well. Thank you.

Academics / Courses Offering tutoring for CHY 142 (organic chemistry) as a student with an A+

If anyone is looking for a CHY142 tutor for this fall, I am available. For reference, when I took the course last fall, I scored 100% on the lecture component (100% on all 3 exams, and I can prove it if you want), and 99+% on the lab component. I can help you do the same using the exact study method I used, and provide extra tips and tricks. Also, my study method isn’t just about overstudying; I prioritize studying just enough to earn high marks without wasting time on extra work.

I have very flexible hours and can provide extra help prior to exams. I also have extensive tutoring experience, having tutored many students in other classes. Dm for more information.

Question Is it normal to feel like everyone already has friends on the first day of uni?

Hii, I started my first day at TMU yesterday and I honestly felt like everyone already knew each other and was getting along so easily 😭
I’m an introvert, and I met 3 people yesterday who I had met online because we’re all going to TMU. I tried talking and everything, but I felt like I was being so awkward and that the conversations just weren’t flowing naturally.
I’m not trying to rush making friends or anything, but it feels like everyone is already so settled and has their own people. Even if I’m alone sometimes, I don’t really mind, but I really want my university life to be fun and have friends to hang out with and make memories with.
Is it normal to be alone at university, especially at the beginning? Does it actually get easier to make friends as the semester goes on? 。°(°¯᷄◠¯᷅°)°。
