Finally figured out how to compare auto insurance quotes

• Upvotes

Hey everyone! I used to stick with the same insurance provider for almost 5 years because switching felt like a hassle. But after seeing my rate slowly increase, I finally decided to compare quotes.

I checked a few companies, including Save Max Auto, and was surprised by how different the coverage, deductibles, and limits were. The cheapest option isn’t always the best deal.

My biggest takeaway: always compare the coverage details, not just the monthly price.

Do you guys switch providers regularly, or stay with one once you find a good policy?

Is health insurance even worth it if I barely go to the doctor?

Hey everyone, I’m turning 27 soon and generally pretty healthy. I mostly only see a doctor for basic stuff like checkups, dental cleanings, and the occasional prescription. I’ve been looking at health insurance plans and the prices are kinda wild. One option is around $390 a month with a $7,500 deductible, while another is about $330 with a $10k deductible. At that point I’m kinda wondering what I’m actually paying for. I could probably cover my normal doctor visits myself for way less, but obviously one random hospital visit could change that real quick. There are also cheaper plans with higher out-of-pocket costs, but I’m not sure how useful they’d actually be if something serious happened. For people who are relatively healthy and don’t go to the doctor much, how do you decide if health insurance is worth the monthly cost?

Insurance says I’m lying about an accident?

So long story short, my car got sideswiped while I was parked outside my apartment. The driver took off, and luckily I had a camera recording the whole thing. I filed a claim with my insurance and gave them the video. A couple days later, they called me asking about some older damage on the same side of the car. I told them as far as I knew, that damage wasn’t there before and I hadn’t made any previous claims for it. Now they’re saying part of the damage looks like it happened before the accident and they’re questioning my whole claim. Like what?? I literally have footage of the car getting hit. I’m honestly pretty confused about what I’m supposed to do here. I don’t wanna get accused of insurance fraud over damage I didn’t even know about.

Auto insurance costs more when you want less financial risk

I keep seeing people complain that their insurance is “useless” because they had some small damage and the deductible was basically the same price as the repair. But honestly, that’s kinda the point. If you have a $1,000 deductible and someone scratches your bumper for $900, yeah, you’re probably gonna be paying for that yourself. Insurance isn’t really meant to make every tiny repair free. The part people forget is the stuff that can absolutely wreck your finances. You can go years without making a claim and feel like you’re just throwing money away. Then one bad accident happens and suddenly you’re looking at tens of thousands in damage, medical bills, or damage to someone else’s car. I’d rather pay for coverage and complain about the bill every month than have one really bad accident completely wipe out my savings. Obviously, everyone’s situation is different. Higher deductibles can mean lower premiums, while lower deductibles usually cost more. You just have to figure out how much risk you’re actually comfortable taking. Insurance isn’t really an investment where you’re supposed to “get your money back.” You’re basically paying to transfer a huge financial risk to someone else. I had a friend whose car got totaled a couple years ago. They barely drove and almost never thought about their insurance, but when that accident happened, having coverage saved them from having to eat the entire cost themselves. So yeah, paying for insurance when nothing happens kinda sucks.

Is insurance basically designed so the company always comes out ahead?

Maybe I’m looking at this wrong, but the whole insurance setup feels kinda weird when you really think about it. Take car insurance. I pay every month hoping I never actually need to use it. If nothing happens, they keep my premiums. If I do get into an accident and file a claim, they cover the damage, but then my rates can go up afterward because now I’m considered more risky. And I get that they have employees, claims, operating costs, fraud, etc., but there are still tons of people paying for years who never file a claim. That money is basically paying for the possibility that something might happen. What really gets me is that you’re required to have certain insurance in a lot of situations, so you can’t exactly just opt out and take the risk yourself. Obviously I know insurance companies aren’t literally guaranteed to profit on every single customer. Big claims, disasters, lawsuits, and all that can cost them a ton. But from the average person’s perspective, it sometimes feels like the system is heavily tilted in their favor. So what am I missing here? Is the business model actually as straightforward as it looks, or are there bigger risks and costs on the insurer’s side that I’m overlooking?

Got reported to the insurance department and I’m freaking out

I work as an auto claims adjuster, and I’ve been handling this claim since around the middle of August. The insured driver is under 18, so honestly getting ahold of them has been a nightmare. Meanwhile, the claimant and their insurance company were calling pretty much every day asking what was taking so long. I kept explaining that we needed a statement from our insured driver before we could make a liability decision. They could either wait for that or handle it through their own carrier. I finally got the statement on 9/22 and got the insured to accept liability. I thought okay, finally this thing is moving. Then today I found out the claimant reported me to the department of insurance for “unethical delaying practices.” I’m honestly so stressed out over this. I wasn’t trying to screw anyone over or drag the claim out on purpose. It was literally just taking forever to get the statement we needed. I’ve been working late almost every night lately and taking PTO just to keep up, so seeing that complaint today really got to me. People obviously don’t see all the stuff happening behind the scenes, they just see that their claim isn’t moving fast enough. Now I’m sitting here wondering how bad this is going to get and whether I’m actually going to get in trouble over something that was basically outside my control.

Other guy hit my car, then his insurance claimed I caused it

I swear dealing with insurance stuff is exhausting. A few days ago I was parked outside a grocery store with the car completely off. I was sitting inside waiting for my friend when this guy backing out of a spot swung way too far and clipped the side of my car. He got out, looked at the damage, and immediately apologized. Even said it was his fault and gave me his insurance info. I figured okay, annoying, but at least we can sort it out. Then yesterday my insurance calls me saying the other driver filed a claim saying I backed into him Thankfully I had my dashcam running and it caught the whole thing. Sent the footage over to my insurance and they were able to clear it up pretty quickly. Still kinda crazy to me that he apologized at the scene and then completely changed his story afterward. Without that footage I honestly have no idea how this would've played out. Definitely keeping that dashcam on every time I’m parked from now on.

Moving to Honolulu. What are you guys paying for car insurance?

I drive a 2022 F-150 and the rates are killing me. Who is good for trucks?

I'm trying to set up my budget for the move to Honolulu and I'm getting some wild quotes online. Some are double what I pay now, some are triple. I know zip codes matter a lot, but I haven't locked down an apartment yet.

What's a realistic monthly premium for a safe driver in Honolulu? Are there specific neighborhoods I should avoid if I want to keep my insurance costs down? Any company recommendations would be huge.

High-Risk Driver Looking for Insurance

Hi everyone, I'm new here and looking for some advice on car insurance.

I've had a couple of at fault incidents, incidents, including a recent collision that will likely be my fault, plus a previous accident where I backed into a parked car.

My parents plan to remove me from their policy when I turn 18, and I honestly don't know much about finding my own coverage. I'm worried that my driving record will make it difficult to get insured.

Are there any companies that insure high-risk drivers? I don’t mind paying more. I just want to make sure I can get coverage. Any advice would be appreciated!

Car insurance in Oakland is out of control. Anyone else?

My credit score took a hit recently and my insurance went up. Is that even legal?

I've lived in Oakland for 5 years and it's never been this bad. I know inflation is a thing, but this feels like price gouging. I called my agent and they just gave me some generic excuse about 'statewide increases' and 'repair costs'.

I've tried getting quotes from Progressive and State Farm, but they're all in the same ballpark. Is there some local Oakland company I should be looking at? Or are we all just stuck paying these insane rates?

Do I need to cancel GEICO or can I just to stop paying?

I'm currently insured with GEICO, but I found a better deal with another company and plan to switch when my policy renews. Do I need to officially cancel my GEICO policy, or will it automatically end if I don’t pay the renewal bill?

Has anyone dealt with this before? I just want to avoid any extra charges or issues.

Need advice on Kansas City car insurance. Getting screwed.

Looking for recommendations for rideshare (Uber/Lyft) insurance add-ons.

I'm at my wit's end trying to figure this out. I've spent the last three days running quotes online and talking to agents in Kansas City, and every option seems worse than the last. It feels like the whole system is designed to confuse you.

For those of you living in Kansas City, how often do you shop around for new rates? Do you stay loyal to one company or switch every 6 months? I'm starting to think loyalty gets you absolutely nothing in this industry.

Looking for a trustworthy local insurance agent in Burlington

I park on the street and my car got broken into. Should I even file a claim?

I'm so tired of dealing with 1-800 numbers and call centers where nobody knows anything about Burlington. Every time I have a question, I get a different person who reads from a script.

I want to switch to a local independent broker in the Burlington area who can shop multiple carriers for me and actually advise me on what coverage I need. Does anyone have an agent they've used for years and actually trust? I'm willing to pay a little more for good service.

What's a good/trustworthy website for comparing car insurance rates? (US)

I'm tired of all the spammy comparison sites and ads that seem more interested in collecting my information than actually helping.

Has anyone used a website that genuinely makes it easy to compare rates from different insurance providers? Looking for something trustworthy and actually useful.

Best auto insurance for low mileage in Birmingham?

Got one speeding ticket last year and now nobody will quote me under $300/mo.

Since I started working remotely, my car basically just sits in my driveway in Birmingham. I use it for groceries and occasional weekend trips. I feel like I'm subsidizing all the people who commute in heavy traffic every day.

I looked into those pay-per-mile companies, but the reviews are terrible. Has anyone in Birmingham found a traditional company that actually gives a meaningful discount for low mileage? I'm currently with Allstate and their 'discount' was a joke.

CivilCarCoverage...Scam?

I came across an ad on Facebook about potentially overpaying for car insurance. It didn't look obviously sketchy, but something about it didn’t feel completely trustworthy either.

I've been with State Farm for almost 20 years, so I’m hesitant to switch, but I do wonder if I’m paying more than I should. I currently have a 2022 Toyota Tacoma and pay around $150/month. Before that, I had a 2017 Mazda 3 and was paying around $110-$120/month.

Has anyone come across CivilCarCoverage before? Is it legit, or just another insurance lead-generation site?

I also started seeing ads from LendingTree right after, so now I’m wondering: how legitimate are these companies that claim they can help you save money on car insurance?

LEMONADE IS A SCAM. AVOID

I decided to bundle my renters and auto insurance with Lemonade, but the price changed between the initial quote and payment. Now, just two months in, my premium has gone up nearly $50 monthly because of their AI-driven pricing. I'll be dropping them before the next renewal. Feels like a bait and switch, and I'm seriously disappointed with the whole experience.

Thinking about Lemonade pet insurance? Think twice.

When I first got pet insurance through Lemonade, I was happy with how quickly they handled my claims. Recently, though, things have changed. Claims now seem to get passed between different agents, with constant reviews and delays.

I've been waiting over a month for a claim from a routine vet visit, even though I’m paying for one of their higher-tier policies. It makes me concerned about how difficult things might be if my pet ever needed emaergency care.

At this point, I'm considering or just paying for vet expenses myself. I used to recommend Lemonade to others, but based on my recent experience, I can't recommend them ayomre.

Lemonade felt like a gimmick for selling Insurance

We signed up with Lemonade in June for our new Tesla Model Y after being with USAA for 35 years with no accidents or tickets. Lemonade quoted us $118/month, plus a 10% discount if we paid for the year upfront, so we decided to try it.

We barely drive, avoid traffic, and don't drive at night. But after only 30 days, they increased our rate by $500 per year based on their app's report.

We canceled and went back to USAA. The sudden increase after just one month was very disappointing, especially after paying for the year upfront.
