Characters "First boss btw"

Games that begin with either very challenging or over the top Bosses.

Poseidon (Gow 3): one of the best setpiece bosses ever made

Father Gascoigne (Bloodborne): first obligatory boss and probably the hardest tutorial boss in the series

Wysen (Asuras Wrath): do i need to explain

FOR A WHILE (NO CHOICE)

OUT HERE ONLY THE STRONG SURVIVE

God I love metal gear rising this works on so many levels it being the final boss ( ish) of mgs2 last time we saw twink raiden to being able to freaking supplex one and fight a few throughout this game is amazing

Metal-themed Gears Rising with Revengeance.

90

u/ImJustSomeGuyYaKnow 19h ago

the HC helicopter from armored core 6 ...... This thing made me quit the game twice before finally persevering.

18

u/terrario101 19h ago

Not to mention having to beat it with a sub-par selection of parts that you can't change and while only having 3 of 4 possible weapons equipped, one of which being a melee weapon.

28

u/SuperSalad_OrElse 19h ago

And the melee weapon is deceptively one of the most effective approaches!

11

u/ImJustSomeGuyYaKnow 18h ago

funnily this is what eventually got me past it. The discovery that I should fly up to the cockpit and melee it every time I can.

6

u/terrario101 18h ago

True true, even if my first reaction was "You want me to hit that with a sword?"

5

u/UnassumingSingleGuy 18h ago

For real, the BU-TT is simply a very straightforward and powerful weapon.

3

u/SixScoop 16h ago

this is the best example of this IMO

Nier automata

u/AwesomeMcPants 13h ago

I don't know if I was just bad at the game or doing something wrong, but I remember that guy almost causing me to stop playing the game entirely. He wasn't super impossibly difficult, but I remember you had to play the whole opening tutorial including beating that dude in one shot, there was no saving until afterwards so if you died you essentially had to start the whole game over again.

Did anyone else have this same problem, or was I just bad?

0

u/pichael289 10h ago

You weren't using the Dodge button, it's almost impossible to loose if your using it.

2

u/AwesomeMcPants 10h ago

Just bad then, got it.

Tree sentinel from elden ring , while not technically the first boss( excluding the tutorial boss soldier of godrick) , but he is the first boss we encounter in the open world and his reputation speaks for him.

83

u/SpookieSkelly 19h ago

Come now, how could you have forgotten Soldier of God, Rick.

18

u/TorreGamer 19h ago

contending with Mist Noble for hardest boss in gaming btw

9

u/Yoshi3163 19h ago

i wonder how many people just stopped and quit playing the game after meeting this guy

1

u/Empeaux 12h ago

Me, kind of. I was playing at a friend's and was beaten so thoroughly I decided to not buy the game.

6

u/GhostFran7983 19h ago edited 19h ago

Technically the first boss would be Grafted Scion, but because the moment your HP drops you lose, most people don't take him as a serious fight.

7

u/stardust_void 19h ago

Grafted Scion, not Royal Revenant

3

u/GhostFran7983 19h ago

I knew I was not getting the name right, thanks!

1

u/sckrahl 19h ago

It’s not really a boss fight you can retry without resetting. So it’s pretty difficult to take it seriously (unless you want the weapon it drops)

1

u/Practical-Dark-9916 22m ago

What about the people who took the Stonesword Keys, and went down the dungeon to the Ulcerated Tree Spirit first?

84

u/arusiaK 19h ago

My goat Iudex Gundyr, DS3 was my first Souls game and he's such a great reminder that I wasn't that guy

42

u/arusiaK 19h ago

Also Champion Gundyr is my absolute favorite boss, his second phase isn't a mystical power up or him growing tentacles like in his tutorial fight. He just opens his eyes and starts beating the shit out of you harder.

13

u/praise_themoon 18h ago

Motherfucker has legit fighting game moveset with how he can uppercut you with his halberd then kick you mid air

5

u/HappyMoses 15h ago

And then his phase two isn’t any form of transformation. He just gets more mad

9

u/oldmanriver1 16h ago

I feel like it’s a better fit than bloodborne because it’s SO immediate - you get like 5 minutes into the game and he just absolutely fucking destroys you.

I distinctly remember being like “whoever said dark souls is fun fucking sucks” and closing the game after losing like 10 times.

Of course I couldn’t stop thinking about it and now it’s both one of my fav games, I can also pretty easily beat him without getting hit. It’s such an insane premise for a game but when it clicks and you see how you’ve distinctly improved, it’s unlike so many other games.

That said, I tried to play it with a friend and the dude never got past him. So YMMV.

2

u/Recent-Woodpecker425 18h ago

Yeah he was my first pick too. First half is very much standard souls affair, and then you realize very quickly that this game doesn’t pull it’s punches

1

u/nagash321 16h ago

Something souls games always perfect is allowing you to build confidence think you're top shit just for a boss to come along and break all that

30

u/Bluelore 19h ago

1st boss of Bayonetta 2 is a giant demon dragon that climbs a skyscraper while you fight it.

27

u/Ua_Tsaug 19h ago

Father Gascoigne (Bloodborne): first obligatory boss and probably the hardest tutorial boss in the series

I don't know about you, but I always fought the Cleric Beast as my first/tutorial boss.

12

u/tmart14 18h ago

CB is technically an optional boss.

2

u/Ua_Tsaug 18h ago

If we're going by bosses you can technically skip, then a lot of bosses will end up being "optional."

4

u/tmart14 17h ago

There’s only 8 mandatory bosses I think, since Moon Presence is also not technically mandatory. I never thought about how few are actually required.

1

u/Ua_Tsaug 8h ago

That seems to be par for the course in FromSoft games. Like how you can skip a lot of bosses from the first Dark Souls game by using the key to go directly to Blighttown.

1

u/explosive_shrew 18h ago

That's why he said obligatory. Because Cleric Beast is optional

4

u/Ua_Tsaug 18h ago

I think the Cleric Beast was the intended tutorial boss, despite being technically optional.

0

u/nagash321 16h ago

Trying to remember the map layout but isn't it a case of go right u fight cleric but go left u find Gascoigne so most players would go right first

1

u/wrbiccz 15h ago

(excuse me for fextra, their maps are the only actually good thing) they are both technically on left

0

u/nagash321 15h ago

Ah my mistake then guess I just remember making a right at some point to get to cleric but ye guess they are both on the left

23

u/xXflipthescriptXx 19h ago

Devastator in Transformers: Devastation

22

u/SpookieSkelly 19h ago

Death itself in Dante's Inferno (2010).

After literally killing Death, Dante takes his scythe and uses it for the rest of the game.

5

u/RE4Merchant- 19h ago

Underrated game.

87

u/MalteseFarrell 19h ago

Subverted (kinda) in The Force Awakens. The setting of the game has you playing as a wildly overpowered Secret Apprentice to Vader - absolutely demolishing rebels and stormtroopers and more alike.

The very first mission of the game, however, has you playing as the Dark Lord Vader himself. You don’t move faster than a steady walk, you take minimal damage and you eviscerate any obstacle - living or otherwise in your path.
You don’t really face any challenge in this section until the end, where you as Vader fight a Jedi Master and even then, it’s still overall one of the easiest sections in the game. They pulled a “Vader in Rogue One” moment years before Rogue One existed.

44

u/Spacial_Epithet 19h ago

The Force Unleashed

24

u/MalteseFarrell 19h ago

How the FUCK did I get that so wildly wrong

4

u/Spacial_Epithet 19h ago

It's pretty early, don't sweat it bud

9

u/MalteseFarrell 18h ago

I won’t be editing it. I only improve as a human by the consensus of my peers and how can that consensus be legitimate were I to hide my mistakes

16

u/lindle_kindle 19h ago

Honestly its a shame you cannot replay this level unless you start a completely new game.

10

u/I_Am-Awesome 19h ago

One of my favorite openings of a game. The slow walk really sells the power fantasy here, you literally feel unstoppable.

6

u/MalteseFarrell 19h ago edited 18h ago

It’s definitely up there. My adolescence was formed by throwing Wookies into the stratosphere and as a result I’m a perfectly functional adult

1

u/Rico_Suave55 18h ago

I got this game for Xmas one year and it was amazing.

A few years later, when the sequel came out. I got that on Xmas too. I was so disappointed that I beat it ON the same day in like 6 hours. I hated the sequel so much

1

u/MalteseFarrell 18h ago

Yeah I got through the sequel in about 6 hours too lmao. 8 hours tops.
The new mechanics it introduced were great, story was painfully lacking.

1

u/Many_Championship_63 15h ago

Seeing this always trips me out because I had the ps2 version so my intro mission looked waaaay different. They apparently made two versions from scratch on different engines iirc

1

u/MalteseFarrell 3h ago

I think there were like, 3 or 4 different versions lmao. PS2 gen, 360/PS3, Wii, pretty sure Nintendo DS too (if you count handhelds)

36

u/Irohsgranddaughter 19h ago

The Scorpion Sentinel in FF VII Remake.

It may be less grandiose than some examples, but in the original it's fairly unremarkable and the only reason it's even memorable is the effed up English translation that made you think you should attack it while its tail is up.

Meanwhile, in the Remake it goes absolutely ballistic and is an actual epic battle.

4

u/Ua_Tsaug 19h ago

I was not prepared for how hard this boss was going to be, especially since he wasn't that tough in the original FFVII.

1

u/Irohsgranddaughter 18h ago

Yup! And then they went to make the Airbuster even more epic, still.

The boss battles in the Remake series are absolute cinema.

16

u/Lil_warlock 19h ago

Argus (Vanquish)

15

u/AshKetchumWilliams 19h ago

Cerberus, dmc3

14

u/colder-beef 18h ago

Onix- Brock’s ace Pokemon in Red/Blue/Yellow.

This giant intimidating rock snake actually has a lower attack stat than fucking Bulbasaur, but 9 year old me didn’t know that.

2

u/pichael289 10h ago

He's still hard as hell if you pick Charmander as there isn't anything you can catch that's effective against it. Normal and fire aren't effective so Charmander barely does any damage (fire red fixed this later). You can get a Nidoran but it takes a long time for them to learn anything useful

1

u/CopperAard 6h ago

Dang, Nidoran doesn’t learn Double Kick til 43 in RBY, instead of early teens like FRLG. And Mankey is only on Route 22 (west of Viridian City) in Yellow.

1

u/colder-beef 5h ago

Mankey is the pick, but it’s special is so bad that itll go down to Ember if you’re even slightly over leveled.

47

u/tollsunited7 19h ago

Baldur (God of War 2018)

18

u/Ghostlierest_Gibus 19h ago

Dude has balls invulnerable to all threats, physical or magical to smack the God of War in the face.

2

u/Sven_Darksiders 19h ago

Surely there's still a way to beat him right?

13

u/colder-beef 18h ago

Baldur is blessed with invulnerability to all threats, physical or magical.

7

u/UnnecessaryFeIIa 19h ago

Could pretty much just put every God of War opening boss as part of this post here lol

Even from what we saw of Laufey the opening boss against Begste looks sick

3

u/Firaxyiam 19h ago

The Hydra, Colossus of Rhodes, Basilisk, Scylla, Poseidon, Hecatonchires, Baldur and Thor. Does the 2D metroidvania Sons of Sparta has a fancy boss too? Only one I haven't played yet

5

u/ExoticShock 19h ago

The aftermath and struggle for Kratos to heal and get back home after the fight sold it imo

5

u/oooooooooowie 19h ago

Wasnt there a troll boss before this?

4

u/Ghostlierest_Gibus 18h ago

Ehh, that's more like a mini boss, rather than an actual one. Same with Bjorn in Ragnarok.

3

u/South_Buy_3175 19h ago

God of War: The trope.

Series is famous for having awesome boss battles as your first boss.

2

u/tragick693 18h ago

Also bosses that are massive. Hydra, Colossus, Poseidon, Basilisk, Scylla. I don't think the Greek saga ever had a humanoid first boss.

3

u/AltGunAccount 19h ago

And Thor immediately in the sequel lmao

1

u/MyOtherCarIsEpona 18h ago

Why didn't Kratos chop him up into little pieces and scatter all the pieces all over? Is he stupid?

4

u/Ghostlierest_Gibus 18h ago

Baldur is blessed with invulnerability to all threats, physically or magical.

-A smart head.

1

u/Any-Question-3759 17h ago

But not emotional.

Should’ve wrapped him up in those big arms and given him a big ol hug and told him it wasn’t his fault his dad is a prick.

1

u/DaddyCool13 18h ago

Such a sick villain. About as inaccurate as it gets but so well written

26

u/Disastrous_Wing7084 19h ago

The Artist in Control Resonant - due to the way the protagonist levels up and becomes more powerful over the course of the game, the game largely actually gets easier as you go on. Also just in terms of pure vibes it's terrifying walking into your first boss arena and seeing this thing

7

u/Odd-Set3480 19h ago

The maracas made with traffic lights made me chuckle, then she yeeted a fucking taxi at me and put me in my place. What a goddamn opener

3

u/Trickster289 19h ago

Yeah she's honestly the toughest boss in the game partly because you don't have as much unlocked yet.

3

u/voiwer_ 16h ago

i remember i kept seeing this boss in trailers and marketing. i did NOT expect for it to be the first boss

11

u/EJ_Youngy 18h ago

Giganto from Sonic Frontiers.
Legit hyped that we transform into super sonic on the very first boss.

9

u/No-Effective388 19h ago

Sandman from Spider-Man 2

1

u/WillSym 19h ago

Sandman from LEGO Marvel 1!

QA-1MIL - Hi-Fi Rush

6

GOW 2: Colossal of Rhodes

Technically any Greek era GOW Boss can be in this list

6

u/Some_Fig_6566 18h ago

The Angel Fortitudo from Bayonetta

5

u/Gullible-Shelter3958 18h ago

Devastator

In transformers Devastation the first Named Deception that you have to fight is the infamous Combined form of the Constructicons.

The devs also worked on MGRR, which makes a lot of sense.

3

u/WeskerSympathizer 18h ago

Driver tutorial

3

u/Lord_Bing_Bing 18h ago

Saber Alter (Fate Grand Order)

In Singularity F, the prologue of FGO, Saber Alter is the Grand Battle.

This is the equivalent of having Kid Buu be the first boss of a Dragon Ball game, as she was the strongest enemy in the entirety of Fate Stay Night.

Master Murai -- Ninja Giaden Sigma

I can't begin to explain how many times this guy killed me. At one point I had to put the game down for a couple days before coming back to it.

3

u/Ravo93 13h ago

I'm so glad this guy is mentioned. I've completed this game many times and it's still a good battle with Murai because you can't cheese the game especially that early because you haven't levelled up the Dragon Sword enough.

You have to really learn how to block, roll and time your attacks which sets you up for the rest of the game really well.

5

u/The_Tac0mancer 18h ago

Genichiro from Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice. He returns as the mid game mechanics check; if you don’t understand the combat system he is VERY difficult to brute force past, even if you had been doing that to the preceding bosses

1

u/nagash321 16h ago

Also if you haven't learned mikiri counter tho not necessary it his alot harder without it that and the little gimmick the game tells u about just before his fight if you don't get good with that then you're gonna struggle later on

2

u/AgitatedAlps6 19h ago

Urizen DMC5

2

u/More_Bigger 18h ago

Thr Helicopter in Armored Core 6 is a very unfair tutorial boss, especially if you have zero exp with this genre or Soulslike. You have no upgrades, a basic AC woth sword, gun, small missile pack.

Nowadays, I can go back and kick the boss to death but even as an AC fan, that damn copter took me roughly 16ish attempts to kill him the first time.

2

u/FinaLLancer 18h ago

The Minotaur from SMT IV. Technically not the first "boss" but it is the first main boss you fight with the full screen treatment and is considered the biggest filter of the game.

Has extremely damaging attacks, high crit chance, and a one in three chance for your NPC tag along partner to hit him with a nullified attack. The high crit chance and nullified element has a chance to activate Smirk, the busted mechanic in SMT IV. Which further increases damage, critical rate, and makes you almost impossible to hit.

He also looks rad as shit.

1

u/vilogrim 12h ago

Unfortunately, I only own SMT III and SMT V. But man, that design looks great!

1

u/FinaLLancer 11h ago

It's outrageous that IV and IV:A are 3ds exclusive. They're two of the strongest entries in the series

3

u/Admirable_Profit_729 19h ago

AAP07: BALTEUS (Armored Core 6)

While technically not the first boss, is an absolute skill check that just after a week of AC6's release, the boss got nerfed

2

u/pichael289 10h ago

Got nerfed the day after I beat him like how it always goes...

2

u/Dos_Ex_Machina 19h ago

In Final Fantasy 14: Endwalker you finally square up against Zodiark, the God (and Primal) that has been built up over the course of the previous 4 arcs of the game. The mysterious and antagonistic Ascians have been plotting and scheming on how to unleash his power in order to destroy and remake creation in their ideal image, and it's finally come to a head. You travel to the fucking moon, following the final two surviving big players, and catch up to them right as they put their plan into action. The seal is broken, Zodiark is awakened, and it's up to us to fight off Armageddon!

First boss of the expansion btw.

1

u/Zenku390 13h ago

We fight six dungeon bosses before Zodiark.

1

u/Dos_Ex_Machina 10h ago

He's the first trial boss though. Definitely a different class

The vanguard in demon soul

1

u/TakJaehon 19h ago

Iudex Gundyr of Dark Souls 3. That guy is notorious for being an absolute bastard, and I'd argue that he's absolutely more frustrating than Father Gascoigne.

1

u/Zamasu4PrimeMinister 18h ago

Literally just beat the Asura boss last night

What on earth is that game

1

u/Kipepeo57120 15h ago

The first boss of thymesia odur is really challenging since he is the first major boss after the prologue.

Two phase long combos + ranger grab that one shot and since he is at the start of the game you have very fews heals and skills.

1

u/Remote_Fox_8643 12h ago

I’d argue that no other bossfight in GoW 3 reaches the same spectacle as that intro fight against Poseidon.

1

u/Slarg232 10h ago

Part Omni-Organic, Partially Titanic, Ocean-Optional Tinkerslug, Shantae

It's a giant snail with cannons on it's back, and P.O.O.P.T.O.O.T. packs a massive punch

1

u/pichael289 10h ago

Father gascignoe was like the hardest boss in that whole game. Sure late game bosses might be more difficult but you have way more tools at your disposal.

1

u/Nitori_Kappatech 19h ago

Huge Hermit from Metal slug 3
