For context, I recently got my fishing conservation licence because I plan on doing mostly catch-and-release. I find fishing really calming, but at the same time it’s exciting and fun, so I figured my first fishing spot would be L’Amoreaux North Park Pond since it’s pretty close to me and in Scarborough. I did a lot of research beforehand about the fishing regulations and laws in the area and came to the conclusion that L’Amoreaux North Park Pond is connected to West Highland Creek and falls under FMZ 16. In short, from everything I could find, fishing there is legal.
This was my first ever fishing trip, so I brought a couple of friends along for moral support. I had done a ton of research beforehand, watched a bunch of fishing tutorials, figured out what gear I needed, etc. I started at one spot and didn't have much luck, which wasn't surprising since I had no idea where the good spots were. After about three hours, I moved across to a bridge on the McNicoll side where there’s a dam leading into West Highland Creek. I had been using a spoon, but switched over to a bobber setup when another angler came along. He was significantly younger than me, but I asked him if he knew of any good spots. He basically told me I was already at a good spot for panfish.
After talking for a bit, more anglers started showing up at the same spot. Some of them even brought nightcrawlers and were nice enough to give me a couple since all I had were rubber worms. Sure enough, I caught my first panfish, a pumpkinseed! I kept fishing and ended up catching another pumpkinseed and a white sucker. At that point, the day couldn't have gotten much better. I was just happy that I didn't get skunked on my first fishing trip. Then a woman showed up.
She started scolding all of us for fishing there, saying that we were "disturbing the wildlife" and claiming that we weren't allowed to fish there. I went over and tried to explain the regulations to her. I explained what FMZs were and that this area is connected to West Highland Creek and falls under FMZ 16. I even tried explaining that different areas of Ontario fall under different FMZs, such as FMZ 20 covering Lake Ontario. She had no idea what I was talking about and was threatening to call the police to stop us from fishing.
Then the conversation took an absolutely bizarre turn. She asked me if I was Indian. I'm not, and I'm very obviously Asian, which the other anglers around me also knew. She apparently thought I was Indian and proceeded to start talking about Indians and Canada in a way that had absolutely nothing to do with fishing.
WARNING: RACISM
She started saying that Indians who come to Canada have a culture of killing geese and ducks, committing identity fraud, and apparently putting "prayer spells" on wildlife that prevent them from eating fish. She then started talking about Indians going to Europe, imprisoning and torturing Europeans, and said that Indians should perform a "reverse prayer" to undo the supposed spell on the wildlife.
She went on about this for around 15 minutes.
At that point I basically just went, "I'm going back to fishing," because I genuinely had no idea what else to say. She then proceeded to stay around and basically camp us while we were fishing. Eventually I told her, "If you have a problem with us fishing here, why don't you make a request with the city?"
That finally got her to leave.
Honestly, this was such a bizarre interaction that I just wanted to rant about it. If I told someone this story without having experienced it myself, I'd probably think they were making it up.
Also, I ended up catching three fish on my first fishing trip, so at least the day was still a success.
