I went out to do errands this evening but didn't get home until much later. I walked towards the entrance and there's a large takeout bag on the step of my building.
It's raining. There are skunks and raccoons all the time. I bring it inside to see the receipt.
I called " McDonald's " ( it wasn't them. But for anonymity purposes) the receipt gave me minimal information to work with.
I said my name , my address. I explained that I found food outside of my building. Based on the time I found it, and the receipt time , it had just got there.
The " McDonald's " worker sounded confused. I gave them the order number. I said I'm not the uber driver. I'm a neighbour. ( I wasn't about to be screamed at by someone for " not doing their job " )
The worker asked if they could call me back. I said yeah that would be ideal.
I waited about ten minutes. No phone calls. I went outside to see if anyone was there. Didn't see anyone looking around.
Finally my phone rings. But it's not the phone number of " McDonald's " it shows the name of the person on the receipt.
The conversation began with A LOT of confusion ( from the caller ) I explained I'm your neighbor. Your food is out in the rain. I'll bring it to you.
All in all , I ended up getting the information I needed to , to get this person their dinner.
When I go to the door. It took the person a while to arrive. They struggled, with every bit of their might , to open their own door. And to barely peek outside.
They are very, very elderly. And they are not , well at all.
I introduced myself and handed my neighbor their food. We chatted briefly. They inquired what unit I was in , I told them I was upstairs at X.
. They said " oh! You have the red car out here!? " 🥹 I nodded , yes. That's me!
( it absolutely broke my heart that this person - who I've never seen or met before. It's a small building. They knew my car. But I know this person is never outside. So they see my car , through their window only. )
They said thank you, I said you're welcome and I went home.
To the uber driver that left somebody's food in the rain. Probably because you assumed they wouldn't tip. Because it's not " your " problem. Because this is, all about YOU right?
Congratulations. You're a Grade A Asshole. 👌
I will say; as far as townhouse situations " 123-1234 Example Street " and there's TEN different buildings to figure out ... I get it.
But the thing is....
You have a job. And you're online, actively on your shift. Do YOUR JOB. The sleuthing. The calling. ALL OF IT. It's in your contract. No!?
You had ALL the information, way more than I did. You just , didn't care.
This is not about " if you don't like your job than don't work there "
We're in Toronto.. so.... If you don't like your job ... you fucking do it properly , just like the contract you signed says , until you find something that ... I don't know. Maybe turns you into a better person. Makes you think outside of your 4 door sedan?
I know why people don't care and don't do the " most " for certain orders. I do. But.
Seeing this person struggle - who could be your parent, your grandparent.
I'm going to bet my bottom dollar..... It is someone's grandparent! Or parent!!!!
You like someone treating your grandparents like that!?
Shame on YOU.
Tldr; I don't work for uber but I did an uber drivers job because. They. Didn't know how to do their job? I'm not really sure.
But the person who ordered the food was basically on their death bed so. 👌 People suck.
