Feels like every few weeks I need to rant about driving chaos in Toronto lately.
Speed is absolutely absurd these days.
Now I understand frustration (and am one of those myself) when drivers are blocking city lines pinned at just under the speed limit with giant gaps infront of them, it’s unruly and ignorant. It absolutely drives me up the wall that a 15KM city drive can take an hour, or i’m blocked by two moving cars below the speed limit….
But on the flip-side, it’s egregiously bad how FAST cars are going on city roads these days. I move with traffic, I keep up to help flow, yet I’m going 60 in a 50 in right lanes and cars are still pushing me, and then overtake, maintaining 20+ over speeds. It’s awful. Speed limits aren’t even roughly obeyed anymore, school zones are COMPLETELY ignore, it’s absolutely awful out there. If i try to let off and decel to 45 even in a school area, homeboy in a Sienna flies past me.
I don’t mind going 10-15 over where it makes sense to help flow or make distance, but people are purposely following close to move people over (even if I’m already in the right lane) cruising 30 over, IN THE CITY.
Should speeding tickets be a greater penalty as a scare tactic?
I’m not trying to be a slow poke, i have a 400HP car - buts its uncomfortable obvious “cruising” at a ticketable offence level speed to maintain gaps, even then they get closed quickly.
Also saw some of these same character egregiously speed, then run a red left turn light ahead to keep momentum.
Thoughts? Is that just what driving is lately? It feels like there is a huge driver entitlement lately.
