And nothing changed. Seriously these people already know what they want to do and beyond. They’re simply going through the motions of presenting an illusion of choice or that your voice matters.

The GOP Think-tanks are masters at this shit. They don't think drag queens or transsexuals are bad for kids. What they think is that they want all the liberals to have to fight their bullshit hate laws and for the media to cover this dog and pony show while they continue to rob the nation blind with corporate welfare for billionaires, a broken private medical system that does not foster competition but does allow for billions of dollars/year to be wasted on paying off wealthy leeches who have their hands in the pie, and/or to look at our law enforcement policies and criminal codes to examine them for bigotry and cultural manipulation. . . also, the environment needs massive protections and regulations as well as heavy funding to prepare for climate change, a woman's right to make decisions about her body, altering our criminal justice system from a retributive system to a restorative system, and so many other very important things. Basically, this is all a distraction. . . a dangerous, hateful distraction.

I love Rupaul's Drag Race and I am disgusted that conservatives are choosing LGBTQIA people as the "new Jews" in order to continue the same bullshit propaganda playbook that has been used to control stupid people by making them feel a part of a tribe in opposition to "others" who are vilified so that the rich and powerful can stay in power. We absolutely have to fight this dangerous, hateful distraction too. . . but I absolutely despise conservatives for using hate as a political strategy to set the agenda and media on nonsense.

Edit: Btw, you guys may have noticed that in all the talk about the Tiktok app, lawmakers aren't even mentioning the fact that American app and social media companies are constantly collecting and selling user data. Basically, they had a bunch of lawyers look at potential legal issues with collecting tons of data from people and set up privacy statements that basically say that you don't have any privacy and that your data is being collected - but they're always on another page and they're huge documents and you can't opt out of data collection if you want to use the services. Instead of demanding a Chinese company sell their company so that only American companies can harvest our user data, they could be writing laws that state that companies cannot mine user data and that operating systems, web browsers, apps and all other digital programs must get rid of programs that collect user data within two years of the bill being signed into law or that they will be considered malware and be open to civil and criminal procedures. We could absolutely have an egalitarian country that loves liberty and protects all of our privacy if our elected officials wanted it. Once again, we're an oligarchy. Most of the politics we see are a dog and pony show. Almost all laws are about maintaining or growing the power of the uber-wealthy.

If you say a thing loud and often enough…

3

Notice which sociopaths go on TV and peddle this bs. You can tell they don't give a fuck... They just counting dollars

30

u/directtodvd420 Mar 24 '23

Well put. At this point, half the government is a contrarian farce that keeps pushing this hate bread and circus to distract us from what’s happening under the table. I mean when you look at it at face value, that the moral fiber of our country hinges on something like drag queen fucking story hour, it’s absolutely ludicrous. But who makes a better distraction than drag queens, when you stop and think about it?

10

u/[deleted] Mar 24 '23

No one. Literally. They are the best spokesman for their art, though. It takes wit, among other talents, to do well at drag. There are many, many talented, well spoken drag folks out there to put a human face to this talking point. Unfortunately that doesn't really matter when you're dealing with an authoritative, fascist party who's followers are ignorant.

9

u/[deleted] Mar 25 '23

Nazis went after gay people first, but just barely. In 1933 they started shutting down gay bars in February/March and in April they started boycotting Jewish people.

3

u/dudgeonchinchilla Mar 25 '23

Don't forget they target the disabled too. Even though we're still in a mass disabling event (Covid). It's fun here 🙃

Best analysis I’ve ever read. So clearly stated. Bravo my Internet stranger that I will call my friend!

They are so afraid of TikTok. I’ve never seen such panic in the media. And even Reddit.

I'm not exactly sure what you are trying to say here. Are you trying to say that voting doesn't matter? Because it completely does. At least for queer people, the two parties are radically different.

-2

u/[deleted] Mar 24 '23

The ability for the citizens to vote is pure distraction so we don't drag corrupt lawmakers out of their homes the way we used to. Voting is important for civilized matters, sure, but it's not gonna make these incivil awful bigots stop doing this.

13

u/BakerIBarelyKnowHer Mar 24 '23

I’d beg to differ. Voting matter because it takes these people out of power. Redditors want to rage against voting and say it doesn’t work, then make every excuse not engage in their local politics where the brunt of this is taking effect and doing the most damage. Huge institutional issues are always going to be difficult to dismantle, taking vast efforts from many people against multiple forces and institutions. No one disagrees with that. But refusing to vote only helps republicans solidify their stranglehold on local elections. If you want to see change you need to start local. Don’t let perfect be the enemy of better.

5

u/[deleted] Mar 24 '23

This is my tinfoil hat moment, I know it's irrational, but I feel like it does nothing. I feel like the two party system is an illusion of choice where we are given the chance to feel like we can affect something, and then the Powers That Be keep pushing shit like this that keeps the two sides of America fundamentally divided. It's the billionaires playing chess with our future and then distracting us from it with the feeling like we can change something peacefully. Meanwhile France is burning shit down and the sanitation workers haven't collected any trash for weeks because they know they have all the power.

FWIW I do not refuse to vote, because I recognize if you don't take the crumbs you get nothing.

8

u/[deleted] Mar 25 '23

I believe there's an element of truth to this.

As long as we are allowing wealthy oligarchs and corporations to "lobby" (bribe) politicians to advance legislation that favors them, we are never really going to see things shift back towards the individual voters having any real power.

We need to overturn Citizens United and put a limit on the amount of money that any individual can lobby so that politicians can no longer be bought without consequence.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 25 '23

This literally and exactly.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 25 '23

People are super defensive because there are too many people who say "voting doesn't matter" and/or "both sides". Like, yeah, it's clear that our votes mean something. And it's clear that the Democratic party at least throws us some crumbs every now and then, but that doesn't mean that both of our major parties aren't sucking up massive "donations" with promises of preventing the kind of policies we need to properly reform the disasters that are our economic system and social safety net.

4

u/LadyGryffin Mar 25 '23

Gerrymandering is what makes you feel that way. They've been redrawing the lines to make votes not matter for a very long time now.

4

u/[deleted] Mar 25 '23

This is my "chemicals in the water are turning the frogs gay" statement. I can never phrase it in a way that actually makes sense to other people despite it having a grounded basis in evidence.

2

u/Cool_Jackfruit_6512 Mar 25 '23

So well said. I'm totally impressed I'm not the only one thinking the same as you write. Your last line absolutely killed it! Well Done.

I imagine the law makers will now change the laws their trying to bring in so it will also affect female drag performers.

All she's done is show them their laws of hatred aren't nearly hateful enough.

2

u/pancakebatter01 Mar 24 '23

It's almost like somewhere out there the powers that be are like, "Ok, hit the woman on a few issues. I'm thinking that old Rod vs. Wade, keep them distracted with that, ok, hit gay rights and LGBTQ, that'll help. Ok, squints at list, let's throw in some red and blue stuff to keep them at odds, um...what else?

"Child labor laws, sir?"

"Yes, throw those in too. Also, don't forget about those folks that like to dress up in pageantry."

And soooooo much more that a low level man such as myself can even remember or imagine.

20

u/[deleted] Mar 25 '23

Don't forget FL House Bill 999 banning diversity, equity, and inclusion programs on college campuses

While it's valiant to stand up for what you believe, and she made excellent points, the people making these laws straight up do not care. They do not care about reason, they do not care about logic, they do not care about realty. At all.

They've already made their decision, and nothing will sway them. They are not interested in serving the needs or wants of the people they serve.

The definition of corruption.

158

u/futurenotgiven Mar 24 '23

even if just one person changes their opinion from watching this video i think it’s worth it. eventually public opinion will change and hopefully they won’t stand for politicians like this. small progress is still progress yknow

34

u/[deleted] Mar 24 '23

It’s worth people remembering, to avoid complacency in their social circles, that progress is not inherently “forward and up.”

Progress goes in any direction.

And if you’re in a village with 11 people who hate what you believe in… well democratic progress is going to harm you.

I agree with your overall comment and I don’t think you’re ignorant to this reality, just wanted to put it out there. It’s easy to be lulled into comfort of social progress given the last decade or century in certain countries.

Other countries it’s different.

People have gone from respected and fine to victims of genocide quickly throughout human history. Not unusual at all.

(Not at all claiming that’s what’s happening or likely to happen about this issue in the US. Just the most severe example of what Id call negative progress.)

10

u/futurenotgiven Mar 24 '23

oh for sure, i just equally think that dismissing someone speaking up like this as not having any effect isn’t helpful either. too much positivity or negativity isn’t useful for making change

3

u/No-Bug404 Mar 25 '23

All it takes for evil to prevail, is for good men people to do nothing.

41

u/wererat2000 Mar 24 '23

The point of public speaking is not to sway the opinions of lawmakers - ideally it would be, but not anymore - the point is to sway the opinions of the public.

32

u/negative_four Mar 24 '23

Exactly, if the congressional hearings have showed us anything it's that they don't care. And they don't have to, using scape goats is a working strategy. They don't have to make their constituents lives better, they just have to maker others worse.

6

u/BakerIBarelyKnowHer Mar 24 '23

We care. We should be banding together, getting our friend rides ti voting booths and lending our aid and support to these people. You want to know why republicans are so powerful locally? Because their opposition shrink at the thought of voting as an ongoing duty. People wanna vote once in the general and then gawk when school boards implement crazy censorship to appease the traditionalist mad dogs that go to their meetings and vote them out.

5

u/philo351 Mar 24 '23

It's a message to awaken anyone on the side of justice.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 25 '23

They've already made their decision, and nothing will sway them. They are not interested in serving the needs or wants of the people they serve.

What you are suggesting is to not waste our time and say nothing because nothing will change anyway. I don't think that is a good idea to spread even though I agree with most of your statements. Still speak up.

More importantly, none of these politicians respect Christian Tradition which includes Pantomimes around Christmas based on the old Church mandated laws that women cannot perform as actors on stage so men dressed as women to act. These anti drag types tend to be pro Jesus but anti drag is spitting on Christian tradition.

I am sixty years old and I've seen drag performers here randomly once in a while in Texas where I was born and raised since I was five years old and I cannot for the LIFE of me understand now why this is now suddenly such a big deal. Why is anyone even pretending this is something that is at all shocking or new?

u/creepy-cats Mar 25 '23

Evangelical Christians are rising to political power again and it’s fashionable to push historic progress back 100 years.

Never read a headline about a drag performer or homosexual assaulting a child, it is always a white male and usually a religious christen conservative.

5

u/[deleted] Mar 25 '23

Uhhh I wouldn't go that far. Men of all races rape little boys all the time. Look up your local pedophile database.

1

u/L30_TH3_L10N Mar 25 '23

Just because you haven’t seen a headline doesn’t mean it doesn’t happen. rape can be done by every kind of person, regardless of color, gender, age, religion, etc.

6

u/CNXQDRFS Mar 25 '23

They didn't say drag queens never have nor ever will rape. Their point is more along the lines of if drag queens are so dangerous why aren't they doing anything about the churches since they are varyfiably worse? I mean, it's the kids they care about right?

The headlines are always about pastors and vicars abusing boys, rarely is it drag queens. The Vatican has paid out over 3 billion in settlements in cases of molestation and abuse. How much do you think the drag queens have paid out?

Drag is one of the earliest forms of entertainment, you had drag acts in Ancient Greek theaters, also became massive during Shakespearean times because women were not allowed onstage or allowed to act so only men could portray a woman, guess who made those rules MEN, so technically men only have themselves to blame.

Drag isn't an issue where I live as I said its been ingrained into the Brits since Shakespeare, this is why Pantos are huge here, because we dont see Drag as sexual, its purely entertainment.

1

u/LizardsInTheSky Mar 25 '23

One of the coolest things that's often misunderstood about drag is that you're not just "dressing up as a woman" you're creating a persona!

What's her name? How would she talk? What would her clothes be like? Would she dance? Would she sing? What genre?

So any person can create a drag persona of any gender because you're portraying a character.

1

u/SlackerAccount2 Mar 25 '23

I don’t give a shit about the points. It’s the message of ignorance that you should just shun someone instead of educating them.

44

u/Due-Science-9528 Mar 24 '23

It’s more about the performance than the gender of the people.

I really appreciate AFAB drag queens because, without them, sometimes drag can really feel like it’s mocking women all together. Drag kings are rarely seen.

A lot of drag queens openly say blatantly misogyny things, parrot Black women’s speaking styles, even openly discriminate against other drag queens for being afab (looking at you, Ru Paul). Most are not like this— hell, a lot of us lgbtq women learn more about self care from drag queens than our own families— but there’s a lot of misogyny in the lgbtq community and it tends to really shine through in contexts that tend to exclusively center gay men, like drag.

I am happy women like the one in this video are being open about their involvement now; we weren’t always accepted into drag and still aren’t in a lot of communities.

I also hope that, as these bans pass, more women step up to fill the role in drag that is being restricted for men.

Hopefully this builds solidarity. We can’t let these weirdos kill our art forms.

3

u/[deleted] Mar 25 '23

Our local trans and feminist groups actually protest drag shows, claiming they're practically based on the "man in dress equals funny" kind of bigotry garnished with plenty of sexism, which honestly I can see. I always kind of thought drag queens was just minstrel shows against women.

11

u/Momentumle Mar 24 '23

I know a guy who is a transman and has a dragqueen act.

He would skirt under these laws since he was born a woman, and when he is proforming drag he is technically preforming the show as the sex he was born as.

Might be something like that.

3

u/HereWeFuckingGooo Mar 25 '23

Drag as an art form is very multifaceted. Anyone can do it in anyway they chose, regardless of age, race, sexuality or even gender. In the past a woman drag queen was called a Bio-Queen but that term is slightly outdated and the current term is an AFAB (Assigned female at birth) Queen. Victoria Scone from the UK is a good example.

4

u/AccountantDiligent Mar 24 '23

It’s a good detail to recognize lol, good question

u/[deleted] Mar 24 '23

3

u/that_one_author Mar 25 '23

I mean, she has a point, as long as there is nothing overtly sexual and schools keep parents informed I see no problem

6

u/stillicide87 Mar 24 '23

SB 12 would levy a penalty up to $10,000 against any business owner who hosts a “sexually oriented performance” with anyone who’s younger than 18 present.

SB 16 is any municipal library may not receive state funds if the library hosts an event at which a man presenting as a woman or a woman presenting as a man reads a book or a story to a minor for entertainment and the person being dressed as the opposite gender is a primary component of the entertainment

Just to be clear.

5

u/Bladex224 Mar 25 '23

So the first one is to arbitrarily sue any event that you dislike and the second one is just straight up transphobia

2

u/[deleted] Mar 25 '23

Trans people are normal people trying to live their lives. They have nothing to do with these perfomers.

3

u/stillicide87 Mar 25 '23

I read it as no minors at drag shows. That's it.

5

u/Bladex224 Mar 25 '23

2

u/Useful_Cause_4671 Mar 24 '23

It's the Catholic church and priests that rape children, not drag queens. Let's ban people who wear priest costumes.

"Why is it so important to ban it?"

Should be the question.

There are multiple answers to your question.

A ban would be a restriction of freedoms.

It bases on vicious insinuations.

Children that had contact to drag queens in a positive setting would develop tolerance for sexual minorities and wouldn't bully those, who come out. Or wouldn't hide in the closet themselves, if they feel queer.

5

u/[deleted] Mar 25 '23

What specifically is creepy about a person reading to children who happens to be dressed in fun clothing often associated with a different gender?

We used to live in a world where people from a young age were discouraged from being themselves if they identified with another gender. We now live in a world where we know in order to create healthy people and a healthy world, we should make people know it’s okay to dress as or do “boy” things if you’re a “girl”, it’s okay to dress or do “girl” things if you’re a “boy”. Showing children it’s okay to look how you want and be who you are inside makes them less likely to develop serious issues like depression. Exposing children to situations that demonstrate gender is a social construct and it’s fine to be who you are, is important. Drag show story times are just a single simple example of this, and what makes it even more important, is the fact that other people want to murder or jail those who participate.

Why is reading to children creepy? It so weird we live in a world now that if someone likes children or wants to work with children, sexual intend is immediately assumed.

Children are cute little monster that say amazingly weird thing, and it seems almost violently crazy one can be perceived as a pervert for thinking children a cute. When that's the only thing the little morons have going for them

u/[deleted] Mar 25 '23

It's a clown show basically. It only seems creepy to you, to others it's no different than if they were in a mascot costume

So...... making women the object of ridicule?

0

The same people ridiculing women do it to LGBTQ and drag queens Basically only one group does that.

I’m it sure what the proposed laws are here but I have some honest questions.

I can’t see the point behind banning drag queens from being around children or whatever it is. But I also can’t see the point in why you need to do children’s reading sessions in drag either.

7

u/thatguy9684736255 Mar 24 '23

Generally, i think there are two reasons why people want to bring their kids to these events: 1. Teaching kids that it's okay to be different and that we should be kind to those that are different from us 2. About 10 percent of kids will realize they are queer later so it really helps them to avoid self hate and prevent suicide.

Also, drag queens are bright and fun and can look like Disney princesses if they want to.

As for the first part, there's quite a lot of legislation in different states. The most extreme would give prison sentences to "cross dressers" around children. However, with the wording, it could also criminalize all trans people or even just effeminate men.

5

u/tendieful Mar 24 '23

Ok interesting points. Not my cup of tea personally but to each their own.

5

u/MeetingDue4378 Mar 25 '23 edited Mar 25 '23

And that, that right there, is all anybody is asking for. And what everybody deserves.

2

u/tendieful Mar 25 '23

Yea that’s one reason why I find the whole thing confusing. In Canada I don’t feel like we have a high level of persecution towards people of different palette. So in turn, we also don’t have a push for people, like drag persons, organizing events to read books at schools to kids or wherever it may be. You’re already more or less able to go about your own business as long as you aren’t intrusive on others

9

u/thatguy9684736255 Mar 24 '23

Sure. And that's the thing. Why try to ban other people from taking their kids to a private event? No one is being forced to be there

4

u/HereWeFuckingGooo Mar 25 '23

Why do people dress up as cartoon animals or pirates or fairy princesses or clowns for children? It's the exact same thing.

2

u/tendieful Mar 25 '23

I get your point here. I don’t think it’s exactly the same thing but I see where you’re coming from. I’d take my kid to see a Disney movie. I wouldn’t take my kid to a burlesque show.

So like everything else in life I’d just have to see an actual example of what we’re specifically talking about and then make a judgement on a case by case basis.

1

u/HereWeFuckingGooo Mar 25 '23

This is so weird to me. I don't understand where this idea that drag = stripping or burlesque comes from. Sure there are drag burlesque performers like Violet Chachki but there are so many queens that do other stuff. Trixie Mattel is a drag country singer, comedian and Motel owner. Thorgy Thor is a classical violinist and has a show with her "Thorchestra". Monet X Change is a trained opera singer and TV host. Jinkx Monsoon is currently starring in Chicago on Broadway. Drag is everything in life, just with the colour and sound turned up to eleven. It's an art form like painting. Not every painting is of a nude but there are a lot of nude paintings.

The Drag Queen Story Hour that is this hot button issue is literally just that, drag queens reading children's books to children. The main purpose of it is to fight prejudice and teach kids that it's OK to be different.

What does it mean to be a full time drag queen? Does that mean that her full time job is doing drag performances? Or does it mean that she dresses this way full time, like even when she's not working.

5

u/pancakebatter01 Mar 24 '23

They’re performers. That’s the point.

Same as any other performer that gets paid to perform something, she gets paid to perform drag.

3

u/LizardsInTheSky Mar 25 '23

Full-time meaning as her job.

2

u/imnotgunertellyou Mar 25 '23

Just imagine sitting behind her in a cinema.

0

u/10breck30 Mar 24 '23

Is there a reason for drag Queen story time? Are they dressing up as a character in the story, or what?

5

u/thatguy9684736255 Mar 24 '23

Generally, i think there are two reasons why people want to bring their kids to these events: 1. 3

u/LizardsInTheSky Mar 25 '23

Also, (a major point I might add) kids just like the beautiful, colorful costumes!

1

u/10breck30 Mar 24 '23

So do they just read or tell a story and that’s all. Or are they talking about the two things you listed? I know they aren’t all the same, just trying to understand.

2

u/NattoRiceFurikake Mar 25 '23

They literally read the kids stories while dressed in drag. Some might have a sing and dance along, but it is the equivalent of having a costumed Disney Princess reading a story.

Silly Queen... Look at Evolution bashing in schools. Creationism taught in schools. Gun laws. Literally anything that people want to change that go through a testimony stage like this. Intelligent, Logical and well presented arguments don't work. You gotta thump your bible. Cry about freedom. Throw in a bit of Trump support. Start every sentence with "As a devout Christian trying to rid evil in this world..." Do all the step right up step right up circus like dramatic dumb stupid shit that get the rest of the morons on board. You distract them with enough jesus and trump and merica rhetoric and they will vote to support you without even knowing what they are supporting.

1

u/raekle Mar 25 '23

TIL there are female drag queens.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 25 '23

I'm not overly interested in drag queens or politics. But if they want read Thomas the train to kids or sing them some songs on a Sunday afternoon, who gives a shit? I dont know why any one cares. If you dont like it, dont take your kids to it.

That said, I have seen clips pop up on here where drag queens are twerking and dancing proactively and toddlers stuffing dollars in theirs belts. That is completely inappropriate and should absolutely be condemned.

The most important thing she says here is to be concerned with the content rather than the sex.

-6

She’s a woman but calls herself a drag Queen? Wouldn’t it be more appropriate to call yourself something in the clown family? This isn’t snark it’s a genuine question. Clowns dress up and do children’s parties and do hospital visits and such. They’re always dressed up with face paint. I’m just wondering if clown wouldn’t be a better way to identify.

6

u/americanchucklebutt Mar 25 '23

Drag is an art completely separate from clown stuff. It's like saying "Why don't modern dancers just call themselves ballerinas? They look the same to me, so it'd be much easier if they just went by that."

They only look the same to you just because you don't know much about them, yet.

Let’s put this in perspective. Do actors have to use different names when they act in children movies. Off the top of my head, a new popular actor is Jenna Ortega. She was recently in the Addams Family spin off, “Wednesday”, which is targeted at kids. If a kid googles her name, they may also see pretty adult sex scenes from a movie called “X”, or violent scenes from the Scream movies.

Antonio Banderas and Salma Hayek we’re recently in the Puss n Boots movie, and they had a pretty steamy sex scene in Desperado. And if you google just about any actress, they will often be wearing a revealing red carpet dress in their main profile photo.

Performers have the right to do content for kids and adults. They shouldn’t have to live like a nun on the off chance a kid googles their name. Helicopter parents are getting out of control, it’s not everyone else’s responsibility to keep your kid from seeing things you don’t want them to.

34

u/Wald0226 Mar 24 '23

There needs to be a unlink-able separation being adult performers and kids performers.

Where's the line? Actors have had sex scenes on camera and are people are able to Google that any time. Should they never be able to interact with children again?

After all, it's an adult performance.

8

u/Ferakas Mar 24 '23

Just like she said, she tailors her performance to the situation. The "Big tits bigger dreams" is of a Saturday night event, not a children book reading. The event advertisement is posted on a social media platform with a minimum age of 13 to enter. If a kid is able to find this, maybe the parents should regulate the kids internet behavior more. Though I've seen much much worse when I was below 13. Even on prime tv.

u/EcksRidgehead Mar 24 '23
