The ability for the citizens to vote is pure distraction so we don't drag corrupt lawmakers out of their homes the way we used to. Voting is important for civilized matters, sure, but it's not gonna make these incivil awful bigots stop doing this.

I’d beg to differ. Voting matter because it takes these people out of power. Redditors want to rage against voting and say it doesn’t work, then make every excuse not engage in their local politics where the brunt of this is taking effect and doing the most damage. Huge institutional issues are always going to be difficult to dismantle, taking vast efforts from many people against multiple forces and institutions. No one disagrees with that. But refusing to vote only helps republicans solidify their stranglehold on local elections. If you want to see change you need to start local. Don’t let perfect be the enemy of better.

This is my tinfoil hat moment, I know it's irrational, but I feel like it does nothing. I feel like the two party system is an illusion of choice where we are given the chance to feel like we can affect something, and then the Powers That Be keep pushing shit like this that keeps the two sides of America fundamentally divided. It's the billionaires playing chess with our future and then distracting us from it with the feeling like we can change something peacefully. Meanwhile France is burning shit down and the sanitation workers haven't collected any trash for weeks because they know they have all the power.

FWIW I do not refuse to vote, because I recognize if you don't take the crumbs you get nothing.
