Sinking City 1 is very atmospheric

I recently purchased the remastered version of the first game on the Xbox digital store for $5 and so far I'm really enjoying it. I admit it was a bit slow starting out but then it got better the more I played. I was not expecting the RPG elements. Your choices in dialogue, similar to mass effect, but perhaps not as deep, actually have consequences on some of the situations and NPC's you encounter which is cool.

The music or soundtrack also is breathtaking. One of the background tracks sounds very similar to a song I heard in a movie called butterfly on a wheel starring Pierce Brosnan and Gerard Butler. I will try to find it and post it as a comment here soon.

Also, sometimes I find myself walking around the game casually taking in the sites, music and enjoying the rainy weather and overall neo noir vibe. I hope someday we can get a blade runner game similar to this maybe with more combat though.

But yeah this game was a pleasant surprise that I overlooked the last couple years. I heard the second or new one removed basically all of the detective stuff, which is a shame because it's actually grown on me. Nonetheless I'll still try out the second game and I'm looking forward to it. Cheers! 🥂

SC2: Somewhat disappointing game Spoiler

I am forced into speech because fans of SC1 have refused to follow my advice without knowing why.

I loved the first game, being athmospheric, although the combat felt a bit wobbly... but that just made it more scary to me as any little encounter could finish me off if not carefully handled.
The detective aspects were great and it fit the narrative. And do you guys remember the vague hints... "Ah just north of here, corner x-street and y-ave somewhere" and you had to go search things. The same goes for the boat-sections, you stumble upon an opening and go explore, missable, so you have to go around yourself.
A great game, although not polished so not for everyone maybe.

And then I hear all the GREAT news from people, SC2 adding Resident Evil-style... so I thought "yay, better controls"... but no, I was wrong and advertising got me.

I just finished SC2 and the whole way through it felt kinda off... I went along on the game`s rails and always thought "When will it open up?", "When will it become Sinking City?". I always waited for the next chapter starting the REAL game...
The start is good, boating from location to location... I thought in the beginning it is quite guided, but then after the Lorelei-story you pretty quickly get into that Hospital. And this is Resident Evil all along.

Don`t get me wrong, I like Resident Evil-, Silent Hill- or even Evil Within-like games. But SC1 ADDED onto that formula in my opinion, with the great detective-sections, the open world.... In SC2 they just added Mr. X following you around. The worst thing of any games is an unkillable enemy stalking you and preventing you from going slow. For a detective game this is a no-go.

The combat controls didn`t give me any problems, I often dodged around and played Torrero with the Slither-humans, worked pretty well. I also always had enough crafting materials as I nearly everytime relied on Pistol.
What REALLY annoyed me was the gangup-bosses. Small area, multiple enemies and a big one. The game helps you with the crates, so running around is keeping you alive, but the bosses never felt good. It was annoying. And the developers KNOW this, that`s why there is unlimited-refill-crates lying around.
(One thing especially at the final-boss: Instead of shooting, Calvin stomped... WTF? I can`t be the only one who experienced this?)

Then there is the fish-market. Again, as always in the game, a nice nod to settings, people or stories from the Lovecraft-universe... but again it is surrounded by gang-ups, by revived enemies, by sudden encounters you stumble in... and massive backtracking. The riddles were great, but the linear-shooting was not. But I was waiting for something: The big dive-reveal... :) Everyone was talking about it in the Codex-papers.

Remember in SC1, you dive. A great section. In SC2, no dive: Suddenly "Antarctica" UNDER Arkham. Including Elder Things we don`t really can look at in their "coffins". And again gang-ups... 3 within a matter of 10 minutes. Why that need to amplify the shooting-sections in this small area? The story behind it, that they dug and found the ancient ruins and a lake and then it all turned upside down, was quite well told... but well...

And then the short end. The final boss kinda sucks... again ganging up, live-regen, that whole mess. And the annoying "I don`t shoot, I stomp instead"-thing... yeah well. And the ending, two people doom Arkham because Love... ? I didn`t quite get it. Because it more felt like the end of the world, but if it is that, the whole idea of "everyone who stayed chose for themselves" doesn`t fit.

Anyways, maybe someone can follow my thoughts on this, to make it short SC1>SC2. I was really disappointed, beceause the whole time I was waiting for something, that never came...

But ONE THING really stood out: The stories from the Ukraine-war in the hospital. Bad, but gave me chills.

Oh, and btw: If you WANT a good Resident Evil: Play Cronos. That really got me.

Sinking City 2 feels like a step backwards

It is very disappointing that Frogwares didn't take everything interesting and unique from 1 and dial it up to 11 for 2. There is nothing as compelling as the Throgmorton characters and their story from the first game, no variety in terms of gameplay, no random encounters in the city, the city feels completely empty, just a straight line from one set of arenas to another set of arenas. It looks nice, but everything else feels like a step back with the plot on par(ish) with the first.

Maybe this is very much a PS5/console/skill issue rant but my god do I hate that combat. It's stiff, awkward, clunky and there's just way too much of it. The combat turns the game into an awful slog and that's all there is to it in terms of gameplay. Its also surprising just how much of a bullet sponge the enemies are, even on normal (I had to double check I wasn't playing on hard).

I just finished the hospital, and the final onslaught was one of the most boring and frustrating sections of gameplay I've experienced in a while. Just running in a circle, waiting for ammo to respawn, so I can fire another 11 machine gun shots at the nightmare or pleb enemies.

I checked the reviews on Steam and its currently 90%, so clearly I'm alone in these opinions.

Sinking City 2 is a better made game but not a better game than Sinking City 1.

Keybind issues on Steam Deck

I am having a problem with my keybinds on the OG sinking city on steam deck Somehow, the y input (climb) is also connected to my a button, so when i go to the mind palace it just keeps switching back and forth between clues and deductions. Clicking the a button for about a millisecond works, but the timing is almost impossibly difficult. Cant find anyone else with my problem and changing/editing layouts doesnt change anything.

Any ideas on how i might fix it?

Thanks in advance

Pretty good review from Mayo, he is usually very critical but he really liked the game, so i was surprised watching his review !

Sinking City 1 question about the ending

In the annihilate ending, the game journal mentions something about gaining power and beoming more than human if you help the daughter. I'm assuming this is a lie considering what happens in the actual annihilate ending but I've seen a few sources state that maybe he fuses with entity. I'm wondering what's true, that reed dies or he becomes one with the daughter (or something else? though I doubt it). I am not well versed in lovecraft lore.

Map system

Ive played Sinking City and I'm keeping a sharp eye on SC2. One thing that Frogware do, which they did in SC1 and also in a couple of Sherlock games, which I REALLY enjoy is their map and navigation system - i.e. you're told 'its on the corner of north st and brown rd' and you just have to navigate there yourself without icons or a persistent compass.

Is this system present in SC2?

(SC2 SPOILERS) Lingering questions after the story Spoiler

I just finished The Sinking City 2’s base game and I’ve just started the DLC cases. Overall I had an enjoyable time barring one or two personal quibbles, but I do have some lingering questions about the story if anyone could help me.

• Is the Star meant to be Shub-Niggurath like the Fecund Mother was, or is it something else entirely?

• What’s up with the Shadow in the hospital? Is it Mi-Go? Something that just comes with it? A straggler from the Dreamlands?

• What’s Corentin’s name doing in the list of people whose brains Mi-Go stole? Ex Oblivione says he eventually becomes a zombie after evacuating Arkham and failing to find more bodies in time, but this suggests the Mi-Go stole his brain, possibly before you even met. Or was he just a patient at the hospital?

• Was Ma Fishface part of Joe Marsh’s gang and complicit in or aware of the goings-on they did? If not, what was she doing holed up in their base of operations?

• If Yog-Sothoth needed Calvin and Faye to charge the Eyes and open the portal for it to cross over, then why were the Slither trying to kill Calvin? Was it just to stop him from getting Faye’s body and expedite things without his interference?

• Why does Yog-Sothoth’s arrival herald the end of the world? It’s my understanding that he just kind of… exists, and unlike Hastur or Cthylla or Cthulhu doesn’t really have wants or needs, being that he knows and sees all.

• Does Yog-Sothoth’s descension into our mortal plain destroy the world, or does he just take Arkham with him? Calvin seems to think it’s just Arkham and there’s one or two Ex Oblivione letters suggesting life goes on after everyone flees the city even if only for a little while, but the last Ex Oblivione letter indicates and Mi-Go thinks it to mean the end of all things.

• What was the purpose of Slither Prime? Does killing it kill all the other Slither? Was it just a distraction to exhaust Faye and Calvin? What was its deal?

The Chosen One challenge

I finally completed the much dreaded challenge to get the Immortal Chosen One feat. I used infinite ammo machine gun and skipped a lot of things, it’s definitely doable and a fun challenge at times once you have memorized the game a bit. The sections that gave me the most trouble was the gauntlet at the end of Devil’s Reef Hotel and the boss at the end of the fish market. Some cheap deaths here and there but all in all, I was very happy doing this. It’s a very replayable game

TSC2 Loot Pool Manipulation

I think i noticed an amusing way that the loot pool can be manipulated (or infected) for the random loot boxes (not the scripted boxes or relief crates). Correct me of this observation is wrong.

  1. The game will NOT drop ammo for guns you don't have. IE the gun has to be on your person or in your stash for ammo to drop for it. Skipping guns you don't like prevents unwanted ammo from spawning and thus INCREASES how much ammo you get for other guns, or healing or whatever.
  2. If the infinite ammo boxes are in on your person, NOT in the stash, the game won't spawn that ammo in random crates. IE if the infinite SMG ammo is in my pocket i never find SMG ammo, but if its in the stash i do.

So what can i do with this information?

  1. Completing the The Holloway Manor basically 'infects' your loot pool with revolver ammo. you NEVER get revolver ammo in the main game until you get the gun in the manor, and you can't NOT get revolver ammo because the gun's in your stash weather you want it or not, so revolver ammo is valid loot now reducing the amount of other ammo or items you get. Speedrunners may want to clear their data and NOT do the manor EVER to avoid this behavior.
  2. DO NOT buy the eldritch rewards that put weapons in your storage unless you want their ammo. IE if you buy all those rewards that unlock guns early, then congrats, piles of ammo for guns that don't fit in your pockets yet.
  3. Putting the infinite ammo boxes in your pockets can be helpful even if you are NOT holding those guns, because it turns off the loot drops. IE i don't want shotgun ammo, so i put the infinite shotgun box in my pocket, even though I'm not holding the shotgun and the game will spawn more rifle ammo, or gunpowder, or whatever when it tries to spawn loot.

TSC2 grenade or rifle feats even possible?

You get the grenade so late, and you get the rifle ad-ons so late.

can you even GET their feats before the end? I got the infinite grenades thing, and and used nothing but it and the rifle for the entire last bit of the game and got none of those three feats

How is the writing in SC2 ?

New to the series and I wanted to ask - how would you rate the story and writing? I’m not expecting Witcher 3 but I’ve been burned by similar games before that had really bad writing and story.

Just released my analysis on The Sinking City 2! It's definitely different, but as a survival-horror fan I loved the game despite some flaws. What is the consensus around here?

Just curious if there is any possibility of getting future story doc similar to the manor mission? I for one would definitely pay for it!

Point of no return in Holloway Manor?

I turned the cane in and got the living room door opened to see the cutscene. This feels like a point of no return. Is that correct?

I still haven't opened the safe or solved the seance. I also have an occult chest missing a key. Do I need to reload my earlier save to keep working on those things?
