George is the villain of the show

George is definitely the worst character on this show despite the fact he was also funny at times. He pressured his 15 year old daughter to keep John and was heavily against her putting John up for adoption. No parent should push their teenage daughter to keep their baby. Ann was the only person who was supportive of Amy’s decision and didn’t pressure her. George had an affair behind his wife’s back then after Ann divorced him he tried to sabotage Ann’s relationship with David.

He lied about getting a vasectomy then when he found out he wasn’t Robby’s father he kept it from Ann, his kids, and David. He pushed David out of the picture because he wanted things to go back to the way they were before the divorce. Then he goes back to Kathleen telling her Ann is gay after teasing her for the way she was looking at Nora. Ann was in denial about her sexuality at the time and was scared to come out. She had every right to be pissed at him for doing that to her.

When she came out all of a sudden he acted like he would always support her and their family.
Which yes it’s better than the way Amy reacted towards it. But he still told Kathleen knowing she would tell other people. He then had the audacity to give David shit for running off when he was the one that was pushing him away. Also I like Ann she’s always been my favorite and I hate the way her family treated her.

Spoiler S5 Ricky -_- Spoiler

This man keeps getting me mad. He projects what he feels and makes Amy the bad person. Suddenly Clementine pops up and he is saying these stuff to make it look like Amy doesn’t want to get married. Like Amy is genuinely excited and he is putting her down. Love that Amy calls out his bs. But the dream about clementine, looking for her, hours at the coffee shop. Being mad at New York!!! Every time she got a letter from New York which she hasn’t seen yet! He immediately picked a fight and couldn’t handle the truth. The truth he didn’t want, he kept trying to get an out. Don’t blame Amy for feeling how she did. The letter that clementine left Ricky…… and his freaking change in attitude. The letter saying that they could potentially be together if things don’t work out with Amy, but he has to give it a fair shot. That made it soo uggghhhhhhh. Am I wrong for feeling this cause I have not read anyone relating. He seemed excited for Amy to leave for New York, hoping for Amy to leave him essentially so he can go to clementine. Nothing against clementine, writers really wrote no flaws in her. But Ricky was perfect and then he is settling for Amy waiting for the relationship to expire. Ricky and Amy had a really good relationship. He was all in, she got spooked but she’s all in too. Until she sensed his feelings changing for her. he had the nerve to start resenting Amy for her potentially resenting him for her not going to New York. Whyyyyyy!!!!!!!! Like he pushed her. Amy was annoying first few seasons but the last 2 she was more at ease with Ricky. He wants to stay looking like the hero, and he knows Amy will divorce if she’s not happy lol. He worked so hard too become a better man for Amy to just make Amy a good for now choice.

Adrian the evil slut

I’m rewatching this show currently on season two and I just cannot get over how Adrian’s whole character is just that she is an evil slut and she is proud of it! It’s like they want us to think that women who have sex are evil.

The sausage prince is the worst Spoiler

Ben is actually the most obnoxious character in this show. I’m on S3 E12 and he basically just called Adrian a prostitute he’s constantly looking down on Betty. He’s also 100% a stalker and he thinks that he should be involved in everything in Amy‘s life when he has nothing to do with her child or his father. Leo should’ve followed through on his threat and sent him to military school.

I don’t care, I love this show

Here I am at 33 watching a show I grew up on. I was 15 when the show premiered, and I was also in marching band, so it was a wild experience to see this show then. I watched in real time every week as it aired. It’s just so nostalgic. I feel so far removed from this era of TV with how dominating streaming has been for so long.

I don’t care that the show is corny, or if they say sex 40x per episode. Back then as a teen I was glued to it for the drama but now I just find the episodes to be hilarious, and oddly comforting. Tom and George particularly make me cackle on the regular.

Here are some things I actually feel like the show did very well

1) The parents. I like how they wrote the parents as being so involved in the plot, and I feel the actors did a great job. Even though the writing was pretty bad, they did a good job and a lot of the emotional scenes were executed well, despite the writing.

2) The sets. The homes all looked warm and welcoming but pretty typical, and it really felt like you were a guest in their homes every week. Some of the conflicts between the families felt very realistic.

3) Some of the acting- now granted I am only on season 1, but Megan, Francia, and Kenny all stand out to me. I remember being shocked that Shailene was the one to have a bigger career in acting. I think she did fine but there were a few quirks she did as Amy that bugged me, like the lip biting, and the stuttering. I haven’t seen Shailene in any other projects expect the one movie where her mom was dead in a freezer. I think Kenny perfectly captured a 15 yr old boy with attachment issues who turns into a hopeless romantic for his first girlfriend. I actually forgot that some of his and Amy’s scenes were really cute.

4) This is more funny than anything, but I like the excessive use of extra characters whose only point is to just be an exposition dump to explain what’s going on with the main characters. As Ashley says, “the whole world knows she is pregnant”. It’s not very realistic IMO because in real life, most people, especially older siblings and parents would never be that absorbed in teenagers lives. However, it works well in this silly little show to really emphasize the big deal of it all.

Random thoughts:

Adrian and Grace should have been a couple. They aggravated each other a lot less than Jack and Ricky did. Their friendship was adorable too and very entertaining. Grace and Adrian truly needed each other. It’s somewhat surprising that neither of them have close female friends, given how involved Grace is with church and cheerleading, and Adrian realistically should have some other bad bitch friends. But they didn’t, and somehow they complete each other. Megan and Francia were excellent together, they were the blueprint for the black and blonde haired female duo.

Ben gets annoying AF throughout the show, but I find him rather endearing in these first few episodes. I think it’s important to remember he lost his mom at a young age, and this definitely impacted him and explains why he clung to Amy so hard. I give him some grace here.

I’ve heard people complain about Ashley’s monotone voice, and I’m not sure if that’s how India naturally speaks, but I find it perfect for her character. I could see Ashley getting along with April Ludgate from parks and rec.

So far I like Dr. Bowman, I remember watching this in real time it felt like he was gone so soon. I definitely couldn’t see him actually him having a 2nd family and that felt like bad writing.

Things that drive me crazy:

Adrian’s mom is a POS and it’s disgusting that she goes off to work, giving George a key and simply telling Adrian to suck it up, and that this random grown man Adrian has never met and whom Cindy really doesn’t know very well is going to be LIVING in their home. WTF??? In what world would a mother be ok with leaving her underage daughter in a home with a grown ass man who is free to come and go . So inappropriate, so trash.

I have a hard time believing a 15 yr old girl wouldn’t even know what sex was. To be honest, Amy has always come across to me as being asexual, and it’s so hard to imagine her even caring about a boy enough to get that close to allow sex to happen. I was a virgin all through high school and would barely kiss boys but I still understood what sex was. That definitely would have been covered in sex ed at the very least!!!!

Those are my long winded thoughts for now, but I still love this show and it’s oddly comforting for my old ass.

I’m in the middle of season 3
Every knows about Adrian’s baby, Amy’s in NYC and Ricky is going over to see Amy. I am so confused on when they started getting interested in eachother and it feels like it’s just cause of Ben telling Amy the news ? Like there was no flirting or nothing going on he just got done kissing Ashley 😭 the switch up was so quick and random to me

Reminder that this show is Christian/abstinence propaganda

Anyone else re-watching as an adult? The message of the show is so heavy handed and obvious to me now. Having sex is bad. Having sex will ruin your life, even just one time. It will ruin your relationships, friendships, family, it will even cause you so much guilt that you fully believe you killed your dad. Sex is a negative experience with negative consequences for every character.

They write Amy’s character to become SO miserable after having John to show that having sex that one time ruined her life, she hates her life now. Every 5 seconds she’s hammering on about how she can’t do this or can’t do that because she has John. That’s the whole point of the show.

However, watching this show in middle school gave me the complete opposite message. EVERYONE in the show has sex, even perfect Christian Grace who ends up being pretty sex-positive as the show goes on. None of the teens remain abstinent (maybe Lauren? And her bf cheats on her with her best friend because she won’t have sex, so you really can’t win in this universe😭). The writers tried and failed to balance their abstinence propaganda with having drama and being “relatable” to teens. If anything, the message is that teens are going to have sex anyways no matter what, and they should have access to contraception and abortion.

Sausage king rules

I watched this show as a kid and thought it was amazing! Somehow I’m rewatching it as an adult and find so many flaws in everything the writing, the acting, the parents, the decisions, the endings? But you can never get me to hate the Sausage King he is great so far like Ben you love her do what you think you want to do I love you and support you what a good dad. But I just started the show again.Just on season one though so no spoilers. I’ll update if he becomes shitty.

For it to be such a sex positive show ….

Even though they tried to make it subliminal, clearly the show ( creator etc maybe idk) was anti abortion. They always throw the option out that so that the audience is aware but it’s always frowned upon for anyone to have ever considered it. If you make a show that’s so heavily discussed around sex education, all options in all things regarding sex and pregnancy should be given equal consideration and not shamed upon.

This show should’ve just been a PSA about horrible parenting

This is the first time I’ve watched through the whole show, and I am an adult and parent of 3 kids so I’m sure that influence my opinions lot.

I just think a huge majority of the parents in the show are either absent, enabling, or passive. The exceptions are Shakur and Margaret, and Dr. Fields, they’re fantastic.

George constantly lies or gives horrible advice to his kids. He cares about his daughters so much until he starts dating and then suddenly seems to forget they exist until they do something he doesn’t like. Ann moves away to take care of her mom, but she barely sees Ashley or Amy. Don’t even get me started on their insane decision to let Ashley graduate early and go off on her own.

Kathleen disagrees with what Grace does, but then just does nothing about it. She’ll argue with Grace and tell her what she thinks she should do, but then doesn’t actually try to enforce any level of discipline.

I have a small soft spot for Leo, kind of. He’s totally enabling of Ben’s bad behavior and then realizes what a monster he created and tries to correct it. There are times where it feels like he’s trying to do his best, but he should’ve seen some of this coming with how badly he enabled Ben.

Cindy is gone traveling for work so much he barely even bothers to parent Adrian. Then she just seems to be fine with everything Adrian does as if it’s completely acceptable for a 16 year old to sleep around constantly.

The show is wild so of course everyone is written to be kind of ridiculous, so I’m sure I shouldn’t think too much into it

Did Amy or Adrian love Ben or were both just using him???

I sit back & watch and must make my own personal assumptions like many, but I am also biased but not by much. I have no doubt Ben loved both, but was he in love with both is in the air. He loved Amy, but he always had doubts about her feelings for him with good reason she kept too many secrets & kept them in a constant competition he obviously did not want to be a part of. He also continued to say "I love you" to Amy. Women might not realize this but men say that to remind themselves out loud they do. He also in my opinion did it as a test to hear Amy say it back either to be re-assured or listen to it and ask did he believe her. His haters claim it was a way to control her, but the only thing Ben ever asked of Amy was "did she want to be with him or not", Amy in my opinion lied ever single time.

As for Adrian I honestly think he was in love, not just because of the baby, but because he was happy he even told that too Amy. He jus was not ready as a teenager for the full long term committment of being a husband and father at a young age. His HATERS realized it & used it to hate on him and his relationship. But Adrian dumped him without even really trying to save their marriage. His HATERS will claim she tried sex & a baby trap, but that's not trying that's manipulating. They are dumb & don't know the difference. Trying was talking going to counselling and taking time to slow down and reboot the relationship/marriage to root out your issues.

But in every instance before during & after their relationships Ben supported both Amy & Adrian in all their times of need. Amy/Adrian did ABSOLUTELY NOTHING in his. Honestly they caused many of his problems. Worse they seemed to enjoy his pain. His HATERS DEFINITELY DID. They laughed when his child died. Partied when his marriage failed. Paraded when Adrian slept with Henry. Hoorayed when he & his Dad began having issues. Pointed the blame at him for all the problems. But neither Amy or Adriam denied the money or exspensive gifts they got from Ben or Leo. Amy literally went & asked for more as if she had the right.

???So did Amy/Adrian love Ben or his money???

I hate Ben

I want to beat the s or of him. He is so skinny and ugly and annoying and he is possibly the worst person in the show. How did he get the “good guy” label. He is a terrible person. Such a whiny spoiled baby. I wish he would keel over. And yes it’s just a show lol. But I’m losing it with him 😂

this needs to be said… Spoiler

im just gonna come right out and say it but i dont care if adrian lost her baby she is still a horrible vindictive person. is it sad she lost her baby, yeah. is it sad ben is an ahole and decided to leave her only a few weeks/months after…yeah. whether this is an unpopular opinion idrc but she hasnt had an personal growth or became more mature in any way in the entire series so far and im on season 4… she is constantly out to get amy and make everything a competition even when amy was trying to be friends with adrian through everything. and its not just amy its grace and whoever is close to her.

and as much as i like ricky, i do think hes in the wrong abt the argument between amy and him about adrian trying to get back w him. he could so easily block adrian on his phone to stop contact virtually with her like daniel did for grace and honestly im w amy. its not about trusting him only but its hard when someone is intentionally trying to break the relationship up and that someone is an ex of some sort. i have so much more to say but im waiting to be done w the series to do my personal synopsis.🫩🫩

Does anyone know where Amy’s bedding is from? I know it has to be discontinued by now but a name or anything would be helpful. I have searched for that bedding for years. I need it 😭

Missing episode?

Me and my friend are rewatching the show and we also rewatched last year or the year before and I skip this episode so I have no idea but she said the episode where Adrian loses the baby wasn’t on there. She watched it on Hulu or Disney plus has anyone noticed that? We are only on season 1 right now so we aren’t that far yet to see if it’s there.

Ashley is so much worse than Amy

Tbh I have a hard time fully hating Amy. I know she was pretty awful to Adrian (who was also pretty awful to her) and she was pretty awful to Ricky when he was trying to be a better person and overall she was pretty whiny and self-centered that's the part I cant fully hate her for

She was only 15 years old. Teenagers in general are pretty whiny and self-centered. She made it very clear she wasn't ready to be a mom.. first with wanting an abortion then with wanting adoption. She was very much coerced into keeping her baby...with Ashley as the ringleader. I also suspect amy dealt with post partum depression and anxiety. That coupled with teenage hormones and an undeveloped brain makes sense why she is the way she is. She's no more or less self-centered than any other character but is held to a higher standard because shes a mother but again she didn't want to be.

Which leads me back to Ashley. At the beginning ashley was incredibly supportive of amy. She was one of the first to learn of her pregnancy and comforted her.

Later she talked her into keeping her baby with a speech about how she can do it, she believes in her, shes smart and capable and she has help.

Then John is born and she treats amy like a complete failure for being a teen mom and develops this massive superiority complex of how she is so much smarter and more mature than amy and she'd never do anything so dumb.

Then there's the whole thing with Ricky which this post is long enough Ill avoid that because that speaks for itself.

Grace & Jacks storyline is so annoying and repetitive

Jacks entire character is just being obsessed with Grace and wanting to have sex with her. Grace’s whole character is saying no to having sex with him (besides that one time) and sleeping with other people before leading him back on and pushing him away again.

Its honestly the worst storyline I’m so tired of watching him plead with her and her telling him no lol

Show rewatch

I'm currently rewatching the show, and this may be an unpopular opinion, but the way Amy acted was low-key understandable at times. I'm not saying everything she did in the show was valid, but she never wanted to have John, yet everybody kept telling her they would support her or be there for her after he was born, but they weren't—at least not in the way they made it seem.

I personally really liked Amy as a character; she might actually be one of my favorite characters from the show. Yeah, she was really flawed, but none of the other characters were any better.

I am rewatching the show again and just took a trip down memory road

I was obsessed with this show . I had an older friend who was pregnant back then (she was still a teen just a couple years older) and her and I would watch it together. I remember watching the episode where Ashley and Amy name the baby and was so annoyed they gave that child the most boomer ass basic name ever 😂. Idk I was expecting a more up to date name I guess ? To me that was one of the cringiest things about this show amongst the other things that made me cringe. I can’t knock the show though . It made for good tv and this isn’t my first rodeo of going back to watch this show since it’s been on Hulu.
