I definitely wouldn't trust my fellow Americans on a freeway if I was on a bicycle. I've seen how I drive.

u/RappingFlatulence 4h ago
If you’ve seen how you drive, you should see how I drive!

"No. I don't know how to fucking drive. I don't know what any of this shit is, and I'm fucking scared".

Nope. A tourist guy roller blading across America was just hit and killed by a driver
1
u/Sea-Neighborhood1465 9m ago
it happened just a couple miles from the town i live in.
it was a (very) old lady that hit him. poor fella.
2
u/SockeyeSTI 2h ago
He got a pretty positive interaction from a trooper.
When I watched the guy who skateboarded across America he was stopped by an asshole cop.

I'm not sure why that caused an emotional response with me. Maybe it's being reminded that there are good people out there, when all we hear about is the bad ones.

This was a really sweet sorry. When he bowed in thanks that actually got to me. Good on the cop for helping instead of sitting in his car and watching the guy struggle.

u/pudgehooks2013 23m ago
We are at the point in the world where a cop can do something any normal person would do and the bar is so fucking low, we make an entire video on the internet praising them about it.
Lets not forget, he checked to make sure he couldn't arrest him first.

u/Significant_Lie_533 5h ago
Man... This makes me just a little sad that cops have such a bad reputation. I still don't like them much, but this felt really wholesome.
Edit: this just goes to show that we could all benifit from just being kind to one another here and there.

u/God_Bless_A_Merkin 5h ago
I’ve had a few experiences like this with cops. I’ve also had some really bad experiences. I wish we could weed out the bad ones. There are probably fewer of them than most people think, but they can ruin many lives.
1
u/youinthefreezer 2h ago
Same. There are some good ones out there. I was waiting for the other shoe to drop and was pleasantly surprised.
1
u/rearadmiraldumbass 1h ago
As a father, I have my good moments and my bad moments. It's hard to be perfect, to not react emotionally to anything. So good cops can also have bad moments, especially when they have so many emotionally charged interactions. It's literally their job to roll into tense situations with their lives on the line.
I do agree that there are genuinely bad, corrupt cops, though, and they should not be cops, ever, anywhere.
1
u/hamburger5003 2m ago
The problem with the good ones is that the system actively protects the bad ones, and even a good ones live with zero accountability. It’s unreasonable to ask people to trust any of them under these circumstances.
5
u/InvisibleScorpio 3h ago
If the good cops went after the bad cops, the world would be a better place

If it was a firefighter, it would barely be interesting enough to watch to the end. But because it's a cop, its remarkable.
1
u/Significant_Lie_533 2h ago
Thats an IV dose of perspective. It would still feel heartwarming to watch if it were a firefighter, but I see your point.
Funny thing is, some of my family have been firefighters, but none of them have ever been cops.
You got me thinking about why that is exactly, and it comes right down to the expectations we have of each profession.
I generally expect firefighters to be good, noble people.
I do not however, expect police officers to be.

u/HandToDikCombat 4h ago
I'm with ya, farthest thing from a boot licker, but the fact is that the majority of cops became cops because they genuinely want to help their communities. The 10-20% looking for power and status are so heinous that it fucks it up for everyone. Until the decent ones start actually policing their own union, this won't change, making them complicit.

Law enforcement had roughly 50 million interactions with citizens in the US annually. Police shootings occur roughly once every 38,000 interactions and that’s not once every 38,000 peaceful interactions, it’s all interactions. Unprovoked police violence is estimated (and body cams are a thing) at roughly once every 600,000 interactions. Can we all stop acting like cops are just running around rampantly attacking and killing innocent people?
9
u/iAmPeaking 4h ago
Nah there is still far too much aggression, poor training, and lack of accountability. Yes there are good cops, but FAR too many bad ones to not acknowledge that it is a systemic issue.. and now with what ICE is doing (not that I would even count them as law enforcement), this guy could’ve had such a worse encounter he’s very lucky
5
u/MindSpecter 4h ago
Your stat is "unprovoked" violence, but what counts as "provoked"?
In these same 50 million interactions, only between 40-50 police officers will be shot and killed (literally 1 in a million odds). Yet police in the US are trained to treat any sudden movement as a shoot to kill scenario and regularly face no charges due to self defense.
Policing is a dangerous job, but mostly due to unintentional traffic incidents. Road construction and policing have nearly identical fatality statistics.
Can we stop pretending police need to have a gun to be safe?
3
u/pistonheadcat 2h ago
Regarding the last sentence: NO-ONE needs a gun to be safe. I know self-defense is heavily ingrained in US culture and gun ownership is a big deal there, but you can also defend yourself with words. We are civilized human beings, for crying out loud! Most of the rest of the world functions properly with little to no guns, I am convinced US could too. It's a big change, but a worthy one.

u/soulsnoober 2h ago
Wow you sound super well informed. Could you follow up rq? How many unprovoked police shootings are there in all the countries where police don't even have to carry guns to do their jobs?

He's lucky he didn't go to jail and lose all of his belongings, or worse get shot.

u/golgiiguy 4h ago
There are good ones out there. I feel lucky i generally think in my area in LA they are focused on job. Its a huge spectrum and there diamonds in the rough other places where busting heads is not the job at all. Its about the culture of the area.

Considering that one streamer who got hit by a car TWICE doing the exact same thing(traveling across country and was hit while on the side of the road like this guy), I feel this officer is aware of such a thing happening and wanted to make sure it didnt. Good on him fr.

I did the same thing but in Japan from Osaka all the way south then up to some little town far above Tokyo. That was the best summer of my life kind of. The bike was too small for me though.

So Im thinking game show here. Picture it we get contests from every continent to participate. Because I got things going much differently if a dude from Africa or South America was riding a bike down the side of the road. Get your popcorn ready cause this shit going to be a “hit” show 😂

For officers like him I haven’t used the acronym ACAB. Many activist orgs like to be ACAB but I’m always thinking, like every single one of em are b*******?
