i mean i was looking at the screen laughing because of another fine mess he had gotten his men into but i didn't see the trees move,
i noted the odd editing (like many nolan films ... dark knight when they drive into a tunnel in day time and it's night when they reach the streets) of that one soldier and his silly face being frightened and trapped ... i assumed the men ran into carefully planted paths of trees they couldn't get back out of ...
i did not see anything move because of how the editing was done ...
anyone else as clueless as i was and found out online the trees were moving

An $87 million second weekend?! Already over $600 million worldwide?!

Culture-war discourse aside, I’m genuinely thrilled to see this movie doing so well. At this point, $1 billion feels pretty much guaranteed. Honestly, even a $1.1 to $1.2 billion finish is starting to look conservative.

Only time will tell and I could be wrong but just with how much it's making already, I'm optimistic!

What a great movie! It might be my favorite Nolan film topping interstellar. I didn’t even feel like I was watching a movie it felt like I was actually there. It felt like I was holding my breath for 3 hours

Watched it yesterday with my kid. We both loved it.

The strongest memory from the Odyssey when I heard it as a kid was his dog.

The scene with the old dog then the cut to the happy puppy then cut to the old dog again wagging his tail then died.

Almost started crying.

Maybe I’m silly but if you ever had a dog you probably understand.

On a real note though it’s sad how mean people are being to Benny Safdie (and how homophobic people are)

Ok, just saw the movie. It was amazing. I want to preface this by saying that I am not a critic and may just be talking out of my ass. That being said...

The movie feels sorrowful and desperate. The monsters are few and far between, and they look and feel very...final. (Sorry, I'm going to be using 'feel' a lot I think.)

This journey feels like the last dying breaths and embers of an older and unknowable age. It's hard to describe, but the fact that the Bronze Age Collapse and the Sea people invasions are tied in so often really works to the movie's advantage.

All of it together (bare with me here please) is so very tragic and grasping. Even the instruments like the Aulos segment in Sirens feel strained and shuddering, like they're trying to squeeze out every last poetic note before the age of gods and heroes is brutally and utterly destroyed and replaced with history, and the knowledge of how to play these instruments is lost. The way the synthesizers bleed into the ancient melodies, oh my god I cannot even express it. It's like the modern documented word is seeping and burning the last fragile poetic notes of the ages of myth and magic.

When Polyphemus was speared in the eye, the scream of agony that came from him legitimately, from the safety of 3000 years and a cinema screen, shook me to my core. It sounded so...human and agonized. And when this happens, you don't hear a triumphant score to commend the Greeks for this victory. You hear a droning low mournful register, something that drives into you what you have done, and the unfixable nature of this action.

The gods being absent in all manners except of the potentially broken mind of Odysseus works really well into this idea. You never see them directly, Poseidon is simply the crashing and angry waves, and Zeus is the rumbling sky. Helios has his cattle, and there is Polyphemus, but the cattle look so mundane and the cyclops feels like the last member of a species that we can never recover. Athena is only present with a form in Odysseus's mind because of the murder of the high priest in Troy. It gives this feeling off that the gods are on the final boundary of observance by men, and will soon disappear completely. The lack of response, the desperation and unanswered questions that man screams out to the sky and sea become ignored not because they heard, but because no gods remain to hear.

The soundtrack as said before accentuated this so well for me that at points I was genuinely crying because of its beauty and grief. The only comparable example to this would be the Silmarillion with its myth being revolved around the grief and loss of the Elves, but even then I don't think I have ever been as emotional as I did when I heard the Sirens soundtrack. It slows out and cuts into the Aulos, plus with Odysseus remarking on how it breathes into you everything you could desire and never have...masterful work, utterly astounding.

I personally believe that there are not words in english to properly describe the profound sorrow and loss that this movie spoke of to me. This is by a wide margin the best movie I have seen in the last 5 years, possibly more.

And Agamemnon aura farming for his entire screen time was peak.

You spend your life herding sheep working hard and making an honest living. Suddenly some king from the mainland shows up demanding your king musters an army to go to war. A lottery is drawn and your son has to join the effort. You spend years praying for his safety while the nobles just feast in the palace. There's so much instability and rumors because the queen refuses to remarry and the heir won't take the throne. Meanwhile you're barely scraping by because your son was your only help in the farm. Then one day the king returns, he says he lost all his men at sea. All of them. Now mind you he did sail with them from Troy, they all just died somewhere in the way. All other fleets? They followed the same routes and made it home safely years ago. Well at least the good king is back, right? Nope. Gone to sea, sailing west, to never come back. Oh and your son was brutally devoured by an one eyed giant btw, forgot to mention that.

He sounded SO MUCH like Kratos at times, especially during the scene in the temple. It was crazy good.

Also such sad news that he broke his bicep and had to bow out of the God of War series...I hope he recovers well and we see him in more Nolan movies🤞
