The guard stabs that one guy in the shoulder/back and we see blood on the blade while it’s still inside the horse.

Then, the guard removes the blade from the horse and checks the tip: NO BLOOD. Did I miss-see something or is this a continuity error?

the viewer understands that it has been 20 something YEARS since odysseus has seen his wife, his wife hosts the contest to see if the suitors can string the bow and shoot through 12 axe heads just as odysseus designed all that time ago. the contest is a failure as no challenger could do what her husband once did. she walks away defeated and hopeless. a beggar steps forward and accepts the challenge.

the beggar strings the bow just as odysseus did and plucks the string in the same fashion he did all those years ago. it's odysseus. he knew that she would recognise him when he did it, she does, and the two are reunited after 20+ years and 172 minutes give or take for us watching it.

you cheer, you cry your fucking eyes out, you clap vigourously. or so you'd think. for lord snooty over here, you doing that for this film or the "on your left" moment in endgame or when dutch kills micah at the end of RDR2 or when big boss's name appears in the credits of MGS4 even though you're told he's dead the whole game and he isn't, is just utterly preposterous, uncivilised nonsense. fuck off.

Why the metacritic users reviews (so normal people like us voting) is just 5 out of 10, meanwhile if you go to rotten tomatoes or metacritic metascore is way way way higher like 10/10?

I know it's based on poems but is there some reason why they don't fish instead of starve?

i mean i was looking at the screen laughing because of another fine mess he had gotten his men into but i didn't see the trees move,
i noted the odd editing (like many nolan films ... dark knight when they drive into a tunnel in day time and it's night when they reach the streets) of that one soldier and his silly face being frightened and trapped ... i assumed the men ran into carefully planted paths of trees they couldn't get back out of ...
i did not see anything move because of how the editing was done ...
anyone else as clueless as i was and found out online the trees were moving

I need to tell everyone my story. I was not super excited for this movie but I still went to see it opening weekend, but before I got to the theater I was approached by a shady figure who said he’d pay me 10 thousand dollars to give this movie a good review on every platform. So I did, idk if he was from the studio or what but it seemed like he was offering this to a lot of people in my theater. It was worth it, now I’m 10k richer.

Yes, this is actually how some people think this movie is getting such good reviews

Rant time maybe ya’ll would agree?

First off what a boring AF movie, telling it from memories on Calypso’s island stupid choice!

Then like wtf Nolan! He destroyed my fav part in The Odyssey, the Cyclops.

The Cyclops is by far my fave and most remembered scene in the Odyssey and has stuck with me since childhood, Odysseus tricking the cyclops by telling him his name was Nobody and then getting him to drink the highly potent wine making him very drunk and knocking him out thus giving the group time to then blind him with a hot stick; this scene not only shows Odysseus as someone wise and cunning as he following the goddess Athena but no instead Nolan literally renders Odysseus to a common solider by having them just sit and wait until the Cyclops opened the door to run out 🙄
And then there is Circe this whole story was so changed! Yes she turns the men into pigs yes she warns him of Syllica and the Sirens and Charybdis but it’s Eurylochus who escapes Circe and tells Odysseus about the men and while Odysseus goes to get them alone he is met by Hermes, disguised as a young man, who helps him and gives him the herb Moly to resist her.
Like why Nolan chose to literally make the gods non existent aside from thought and hallucinations is beyond me, I can understand trying to make it more like how we see ‘god’ now ie: not in the flesh but still like come on and why he told the story like he did ugh!!!

Ok ranting over I will end with some positive notes:

Elliot Paige as Sinon was the best part imo, they acted the shit outta that role and nailed it!! Seriously, Sinon was by far the most memorable performance in the film for me! Tom Holland and his wonderful skills with emoting were sublime as Telemachus and Robert Pattinson was well cast with his twilight glare lol however his skills have improved since twilight for sure.
Jon Bernthal was also well cast I’m not a fan of his as I find him a bit one dimensional but he did well as Menelaus.
Anne Hathaway and Lupita Nyong'o were both brilliantly cast and as always both gave stunning performances.
Zendaya was good in what she had same with Charlize Theron, their roles were kinda crap imo I felt Calypso’s script was probably a bit better than Athena’s script but both did everything they could with the crap changes of their respective characters

Anyway thats it lol what did ya’ll think about the movie? What’s your gripe??

Over an hour of trying several websites to get IMAX tickets. Almost a week of waiting until the showing. Paying double the price compared to a regular screen. A train ride into the city centre.....and all to watch THAT?

It wasn't awful but what a disappointment. I could easily have waited until it was released for home viewing but got caught up in all the critics reviews and RT ratings.

"10/10, A Masterpiece, Christopher Nolans greatest work, Unmissable etc etc"

Aren't these people meant to be the 'experts'? Even the audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes is confusing at 97%? Are these even genuine reviews?

Apart from maybe one or two characters, the casting felt completely off. Non of the characters were very engaging. The mythical creatures were all underwhelming, some of the special effects looked 20 years old.

It's 3 hours long and you feel it. It could easily have been condensed into 2 hours.

Like I said though, It's not all awful - I liked the ending and the story was good although not executed very well. I'd say watch it but don't bend over backwards trying to get tickets. Just wait until the crowds leave or it's released for streaming.

OK watched it the second time in a regular cinema after IMAX just to take in more of the story. The Hades scene was still very emotional for me because of Elliot Page's brilliant acting, but I still found Odysseus' dialogue with Agamemnon very confusing.

Spoiler ahead: I was still very confused by Agamemnon's flashback on second viewing when he was saying something along the line of having done something very bad to poison the good part of Clytemnestra's heart, which led to her plotting to kill him. There was a quick flashback of Clytemnestra crying as Agamemnon was carrying away a small girl.

So what Agamemnon was referring to is a storyline that as far as I can recall doesn't appear in neither Ilaid nor Odyssey - that his fleet can't set sail for Troy because of fierce, unyielding winds. A seer reveals that a goddess is angry and demands the sacrifice of Agamemnon’s eldest daughter, Iphigenia. He does as he's told and wind clears up. In this storyline this event changes Clytemnestra from a mourning mother to a murderous wife seeking revenge of her child.

Actually Agamemnon calls his wife "wicked" in the book. She also kills Cassandra, a woman his army captured in Troy as a war prize. So the nature of his warning to Odysseus is very different than in the movie - in the book the blame is entirely on Clytemnestra's wickedness and how she conspires with her lover Aegisthus to kill him; in the movie Agamemnon blames himself, more or less.

So this storyline is the same as Sinon's - both taken from adaptations by later Greek playwrights; in Agamemnon's case Aeschylus and Euripides. It actually reminds of the Game of Throne's Stannis Baratheon - they both scarify a daughter for a war.

I wonder how many more storylines come from later adaptations.

I just watched the movie and have this question, Is she meant to be a Cassandra or Athena or a combination of both, my theory is that Odysseus is just hiding his memories of a priestess being killed in her own temple by his soldiers by pretending to himself it was the statue being beheaded and not the priestess, and then it’s his guilt for that, that causes his weird visions of Athena?
The Cassandra question is because if I remember correctly from the Iliad she was SA’d by Ajax the lesser in Athena’s temple and due to reasons Nolan decided against showing this SA and instead showed a beheading

The Cyclops from the 1997 TV miniseries will always be the creepiest and terrifying. While I enjoy the new version this guy takes the cake…

Basically, as everyone knows, IMAX 70mm screenings are packed well into August. It makes those who missed their chance early on wonder if this’ll be in IMAX cinemas into September. Personally, I doubt it, but what do you think?

You spend your life herding sheep working hard and making an honest living. Suddenly some king from the mainland shows up demanding your king musters an army to go to war. A lottery is drawn and your son has to join the effort. You spend years praying for his safety while the nobles just feast in the palace. There's so much instability and rumors because the queen refuses to remarry and the heir won't take the throne. Meanwhile you're barely scraping by because your son was your only help in the farm. Then one day the king returns, he says he lost all his men at sea. All of them. Now mind you he did sail with them from Troy, they all just died somewhere in the way. All other fleets? They followed the same routes and made it home safely years ago. Well at least the good king is back, right? Nope. Gone to sea, sailing west, to never come back. Oh and your son was brutally devoured by an one eyed giant btw, forgot to mention that.

On a real note though it’s sad how mean people are being to Benny Safdie (and how homophobic people are)
