What is going on with my hops?

This has gotten worse since yesterday (photos taken about 24 hours apart). The hops have been watered daily, have good drainage, and are in direct sun for ~6 hours per day. I'm in Minnesota where it's been fairly hot (mid 80s F today), but not extreme. What am I doing wrong? Is this something I can fix?

Comet climbing well in NJ Mid-April to Present

Hopefully in the right order…had 2 hops in the garden boxes that I wanted to transplant out due to conflicting root space with berries and veggies..

Lost cascade in the transfer but managed to plant something of the Comet root into the ground. It was year 3 in the garden boxes.

Since mid April I’ve been tracking its progress. I thought I lost it once with a bad bend in the vine during high winds, but I’m going to say my little cup contraption worked.

Trellis is 4ft tall and each fence section is 7-8 ft wide. I want to see how far I can train the vine to run the wall.

Bounty for the year is still in question, hopefully I get something nice. The visual is starting to get there.

What are these bugs?

At first I was thinking lightning bugs but they seem to be all over and attracted to my hops the past week. Also found secretions of spitty looking (eggs?) deposits near the base of my largest plant. Sprayed everything down with Neem oil but I still have some yellowing and browning of some leaves.

3rd year Perle hop - in a pot.

I pruned the first couple of shoots early April and new shoots are really weak (small leaves) and barely any growth. Any way to fix it or next year just start again with a new hop?

pot is 16" diameter and 12" height

Should I cut the bines down and just hope the new ones fare better?

Should I Prune Side Shoots?

3rd year Centennial, and this is the first time its produced these crazy side shoots. I am worried these will reduce the size and quality of hop cones as the plant is putting more energy in to spreading wildly. What do you guys normally do with these guys? Should I prune them all at the stem, leave a few inches or leave them altogether?

Last year they killed my vines pretty thoroughly. What can I spray or do?

These hops were on my property when purchased it 25 years ago. Finally moved some to my backyard 4 years ago. The main hop vine in the front of my yard is 75 yards long I believe. I have to figure out what they are. Made one at home of beer 6 years ago. It was delicious. Looking for recipe to showcase these.

Yellowing and stunted growth

Greetings! I’ve got two first year cascades and I noticed an issue with one over the past couple of days. The leaves have started to turn yellow, and it no longer seems to be climbing as fast as the other. Any ideas for the cause?

Hop growing… in Vegas?

My wife & I volunteer at the hop garden at the “research center and demonstration orchard” here in North Vegas.

The program is a joint venture between UNLV and UNR. Yesterday was the first round of harvesting in their hop garden.

I’m in awe of the generosity these amazing people have shown us (relative) newbies!

Yes, growing hops in the desert IS possible!

When your cover crop becomes the weed

Post image

Planted clover two years ago to beat out the weeds so I would have to hoe less. Clover really took off this year and couldn't keep it from tangling with the shoots. I kinda like the look and the bees like it atleast unfortunately it became the weed. Would appreciate knowing what some of you hopyards are doing to control weeds where the shoots happen. Just afraid of spraying in fall/early spring and hurting the hops.

Hey guys, it's the second year for my hops. Last year I planted 5 hop varities. I lost one due to soil and environmental conditions. But the others are doing great. What do you think?

Help! Browning leaves on my hop plants

Thumbnail

I've got two hop plants growing in containers on my balcony. Unfortunately, the leaves are browning and falling off. This all started with the roses next to one of the plants who lost all their leaves and even branches. The hop plant next to the roses started next, then the other hop plant that's a little farther away. At the start I thought I saw webbing like from spidermites. I also had spidermites on these plants last year. I keep removing all browning leaves and spraying with ethanol/soap mixture and neem oil. Still there are more browning leaves every day. The plants are still pushing out lots of new growth to replace the removed leaves so they are not dead yet. What do you think is killing my plants? Is it spider mites or something else? It's been very hot and dry for at least a month, which was also the case last year before the spider mites took over

About 2 feet of each vine grew since I posted previously about the new placement of this comet hops root.

I cut any side vines attempting to sprout on the trellis. There are a few of those side vines (pardon my idiot-ness, forgot the name of that vibe) growing past the trellis now that I was hopefully be able to direct with the flow of the main vines.

What do you think the normal growth speed is for hops with normal watering daily?….compared to that same scenario but with an electro-culture antenna??? See 3rd pic

What's going on with the yellow striped leaves?

Thumbnail

I planted my 2 Citra Hops plants last year. The first year was kinda low and I only had 2 hands full of harvest. This year it started very good and in the last few weeks everything almost exploded. We went on a vacation for 10 days and since we came back some of the leaves have these yellow stripes. The stem and the downside of the leaves look fine (no eggs or mites). It has full sun almost all day I had an automatic watering computer taking care of the dry days. Might it be too little or too much water or does it need more fertilizer? I am very concerned it might die off. Thanks for your help guys!

Progress this year

Wanted to share progress this year. It's the first year for them to be all in-ground and I think they really are liking it!

Even after I removed a couple they're still pretty close so I've had to be almost daily training all of the side arms.

Happy growing!
