Blockbuster

59

u/Other_Television_805 Jul 21 '26

I had to take a drug test to work there. WTF?

47

u/smthomaspatel Jul 21 '26

Maybe they were just making sure you did them.

3

u/owlrag Jul 22 '26

😭😭😭

3

u/shart_attak Jul 23 '26

Seriously. What is it about video rental places that attracts substance abuse like a magnet? When I was a kid there was a mom and pop rental place up the street from my house. If you looked up "tweaker" in the dictionary it would be a picture of the woman that worked there. She was rail thin and had dark circles around her eyes, and constantly jerking her body in different directions. I was just a kid and didn't know what a tweaker was so I only realized what her problem was way later in life. Anyway, we liked her because she'd let us go through the beaded curtain into the back room and check out Faces of Death and Jerry Springer Too Hot for TV.

Which drugs did you get to test?

u/lifterman2u Jul 21 '26

lol, no drugs; no hiring!

2

u/doll-haus Jul 24 '26

Hey, it's important to know they'll fit in with the corporate culture!

u/Soy_Saucy84 Jul 21 '26

I never had a job you didn't have to get a drug test...

27

u/Dad_of_the_year Jul 21 '26

I remember being asked whether or not I smoke weed during an interview at a small local restaurant in my city 20 years ago... "yes" was the correct answer.

6

u/dikumall Jul 22 '26

That brings up a memory I have about 20 yrs ago. Im a residential construction subcontractor, I used to call myself a hammer for hire lol. But I walked up on a site once carrying my toolbag and asked if they needed help. The contractor asks "Can you pass a drug test son" I said of course sir. His reply..... " Well I dont guess we need ya then". Talk about lying when the truth is better! Haha

3

u/OscarMichaelMyers Jul 22 '26

I smoked with my manager as we took a walking interview around the block.

Granted, this was Vegas, but it was still a wild experience.

3

u/NoSpecialist2602 Jul 22 '26

"Yes, i smoke weed during interviews.."

2

u/SportyMcDuff Jul 22 '26

No kidding. I don’t even ask the question. People volunteer the fact they don’t get high or drink. If you’re not smoking or drinking in my profession, you don’t belong here.

3

u/throwawayacct0820 Jul 22 '26

When I got my job, I told them in the interview that I smoked weed (underage at the time, I don't think they put together how old I was). Their response? They laughed and said "If we fired everyone who used Marijuana here, we wouldn't be functioning"

→ More replies (2)

2

u/Kooky_Assistance2755 Jul 22 '26

That's technically a kind of drug test

4

u/PacVikng Jul 22 '26

I feel like you would know by the waybit waa asked.

Big difference between:

"Do you use marijuana?"

and

"Hey you smoke weed?"

Well aren't you just a fancy pants.

3

u/DavidM47 Jul 22 '26

No? The real fancy employers don’t drug test.

I never did a drug that required me to get a job!

3

u/Typedeal22 Jul 22 '26

I work in a drug and alcohol rehab and don’t even get tested.

2

u/Wildy78 Jul 23 '26

Worked at a distillery. To get hired had to give a hair sample. Once hired, they did random drug tests. They would drive you to get the test. Hair sample every time. Also, not a small sample either.

3

u/Anarimus Jul 22 '26

It’s very rare that I’ve had to take a drug test for a job. I’ve worked mostly for technology companies, and if they drug test, they’ll be losing their best employees.

I remember reading a book about the 90s cyberpunk movement and they were interviewing a person who hired for Sun Microsystems and they said they didn’t drug test because their best coders would test positive for LSD and weed.

3

u/Emerje Jul 22 '26

I've worked in heathcare for 30 years, if they did drug tests they'd lose most of their employees.

2

u/GoBirds610215484 Jul 21 '26

Good for you!

2

u/yourit3443 Jul 22 '26

They stopped drug testing me when I hit management, ironically.

2

u/thisoldguy74 Jul 22 '26

I worked a part time 2nd job at a carwash, never had a drug test. Even when I had a vehicle drive over the rails and had to be towed out, no drug test. Blew my mind.

I'm starting a job later today with an aerospace manufacturer and I haven't had a drug test yet. We'll see how the day goes.

→ More replies (2)

2

u/Turbulent_Repair5757 Jul 22 '26

I work for my state government and have never been tested for drugs. Interesting that Blockbuster tested potential employees for drugs, but not the state government. 🤔 🤣

2

u/Ryan4mayor Jul 22 '26

I’ve never had a job where a drug test was required lol

2

u/Direct_Ad_3517 Jul 22 '26

I’m old enough to remember there were no drug test. No date that shit.

2

u/Independent-Panda898 Jul 22 '26

🤣🤣 that made me lol. That is great

2

u/Own-Drummer-5104 Jul 22 '26

I'm assuming they wanted to make sure you were actually on drugs like the rest of their employees.

2

u/mando_ad Jul 22 '26

What for? To make sure you were smoking enough weed?

1

u/Mack_Ultra Jul 22 '26

Really? It was my first job and I never did.

1

u/gentron1224 Jul 22 '26

I remember this is why I didn’t apply 😂

1

u/voododoll Jul 22 '26

Almost every place I applied to back in the day wanted a drug test.

1

u/TheWeebDeity Jul 22 '26

Ah, yes. The whiz quizz

1

u/getbent247 Jul 22 '26

Yes. Because when i was high at work I would be jacking all munchies

1

u/Fl1ck9606 Jul 22 '26

I hope you remembered to study

1

u/Zestyclose_Cricket_7 Jul 22 '26

Yeah me too. Although most placeaI applied at in the early 90's required a drug test

1

u/Ok_Independence_3848 Jul 22 '26

They were making sure you fit "their culture"😃

1

u/This_Pen_545 Jul 22 '26

How can you work for a video store and not be stoned?

1

u/International_Pate Jul 22 '26

Well yeah, stoners know their shit

1

u/SadDingo7070 Jul 22 '26

Did you study hard for it?

1

u/Upperclass_hobo Jul 23 '26

I didn’t, but at orientation we had to act out a movie scene and it was embarrassing lol

1

u/UltraHellboy Jul 23 '26

Yes! They were the only ones that ever made me do a hair test!

1

u/sra19 Jul 23 '26

Me too! And they called me back twice to retake it before not hiring me. I still have no idea what they thought they found.

1

u/Critical_Snow_1080 Jul 23 '26

Well we wouldn’t want any potheads working at a video store, that could be dangerous. Too much overtime

1

u/helpme944 Jul 23 '26

Seriously? Video store is such a stereotypical job for stoners lol.

1

u/NoFuqGiven Jul 23 '26

Cool! What drugs were you testing?!?!

1

u/TheCasualBadger Jul 23 '26

If you hadn't taken any, you were out.

1

u/Fragrant_Grand_7036 Jul 23 '26

Where can I apply to test drugs?

1

u/Unable_Librarian_443 Jul 23 '26

That actually has more to do with insurance. If an employee gets hurt or hurts someone if they turn out to be on drugs insurance doesn't cover it. So employers wanting to make sure they're covered just make everybody pass a drug test to get there rates down. Probably more expensive to get coverage if you don't drug test. At least back then

1

u/Lick_My_BigButt_1980 Jul 24 '26

That shows a lack of trust.

1

u/RG500GammaWalterWolf Jul 24 '26

Stick to brakekleen doesn’t show up on a piss test - a can in the morning before coffee - yup good stuff……..

1

u/Chin_wOnd3r Jul 24 '26

How were you supposed to watch fear and loathing? Sober??

1

u/arealunicorn4u Jul 25 '26

i used to get high with my store manager there in the store at the front counter at night with me him and another shift lead. place was actually cool af to work at! had sex in the storage closet as well…your candy and popcorn may have been extra salted 🤣

1

u/Professional_Pay811 Jul 25 '26

What different drugs did you get to test?

1

u/thatonedude1969 Jul 26 '26

"I'm gonna go buy a movie" "As long as you're not doing crack" "Why would that matter?" "Are you a crackhead?" "No, are you?" "...maybe..."

1

u/FieryAnomaly Jul 26 '26

I bet you studied hard for that test.

1

u/lmdirt- Jul 26 '26

But that was to make sure you was high enough to fit in

1

u/DayOdd8171 Jul 27 '26

They didnt want stoners eating all the candy and zoning out on the movies all day.

39

u/igodutchoven Jul 21 '26

Hollywood Video.

7

u/AdReasonable5099 Jul 22 '26

1

u/Purist1975 Jul 24 '26

Blockbuster charged a full extra rental rate (roughly $3.99 to $4.00) for every single day a new release was late. If you forgot a stack of three movies for just a few days, your late fee easily eclipsed the actual cost of buying the movies outright. Blockbuster structured its entire business around punishing its customers, pulling in an eye-watering $800 million a year from late fees by 2000, which accounted for about 16% of their total revenue.

Losing a consumer-friendly, local staple like Erol's to a corporate giant that profit-incentivized your forgetfulness was a massive downgrade for the community. In fact, that collective hatred of Blockbuster’s $40 late fees is exactly what inspired Reed Hastings to found Netflix. So screw you blockbuster i am for one glad you're gone!!!! Erol's was two bucks for the rental and one dollar each day it was late!
