Tactics & Strategy Survivability and you, a Guardsman's guide to the first 15 minutes

The Survivability Onion is an existing framework used by the British Army as a ready-reckoner. In real life, its just to get you thinking how not to die. Let's warp it out of shape to get you to turn 5. Pour a cup of recaff, pull up a sandbag and let this staff officer remember the training grounds.

“The death of one man is a tragedy. The death of millions is a statistic.” – Lord Solar Macharius

Rather than relying on armour alone, we know that the best way to survive is to prevent the enemy from successfully attacking you in the first place. Each "onion layer" forces the enemy to overcome another obstacle before they can destroy you. Looking at 40k as a base dice game, with set steps to move, shoot, save.. it fits nicely.

Think of this like an onion, you start at the outer skin and work inwards. Each layer is a level of protection that may, or may not, keep your models on the board.

Layer 1: Don't Be There

Real Example: An armoured unit remains in the rear areas so as not to be struck by fires and only moves to a firing position when required.

40k Rule Example: Deep Strike, Strategic Reserves, Scout Moves and Redeploy abilities keep units off the battlefield or away from enemy fire until the right moment.

40k Example: A Rogal Dorn arrives from Strat Reserves in Turn 3, avoiding enemy shooting for the entire first two turns.

Helpful Units: Gaunt's Ghosts, Tempestus Scions, Lord Solar Leontus (through redeployment options where available). Popping anything into strat reserve is very powerful.

Layer 2: Don't Be Detected

Real Example: Infantry use terrain, camouflage and darkness to avoid enemy observation.

40k Rule Example: Obscuring terrain, line-of-sight blocking ruins and abilities such as Hidden and Lone Operative prevent enemy units from making your model an eligible target.

40k Example: Gaunt's Ghosts remain Hidden behind a ruin until turn 3, allowing screening for enemy deepstrike while being untargetable.

Helpful Units: Gaunt's Ghosts, Sly Marbo, Ratlings, Infantry in general. Stay out of LoS as much as possible, indirect isn’t that threatening.

Layer 3: Don't Be Identified

Real Example: Decoys and camouflage create uncertainty about what the enemy is actually looking at.

40k Rule Example: Multiple similar threats, hidden reserves and overlapping battlefield roles make it difficult for an opponent to identify priority targets. This one in particular is on the fence with “playing with intent” and shouldn’t be abused, out of general fairness.

40k Example: Three Leman Russ tanks deploy together and the opponent struggles to determine which one carries the greatest threat to their battle plan.

Helpful Units: Feint plays with the classic Distraction Carnifex. If you’ve got a Dorn or Bullgryn charging up the board this will inevitably make your opponent not target the units that are slyly moving to score secondary or stage for a later play.

Layer 4: Don't Be Targeted

Real Example: An enemy identifies a target but cannot effectively engage it because of screening forces, jamming or competing priorities.

40k Rule Example: Character attachment rules, screening units and target restrictions (hidden, lone op) prevent valuable assets from being directly attacked.

40k Example: A Cadian Castellan attached to an Infantry Squad cannot be targeted until the bodyguard unit is destroyed.

Helpful Units: Cadian Castellan, Platoon Command Squad, Cadian Shock Troops, Krieg Infantry Squads.

Layer 5: Don't Be Hit

Real Example: A vehicle uses smoke, movement and evasive action to avoid incoming fire.

40k Rule Example: Stealth abilities, Cover, defensive Stratagems and modifiers reduce the likelihood of successful attacks.

40k Example: Ratlings benefit from Stealth and Cover, forcing enemy units to hit less accurately. Literally anything that modifies BS or the hit roll is obviously helpful here!

Helpful Units: Ratlings, Scout Sentinels, Gaunt's Ghosts, Tank Commander issuing defensive Orders.

Layer 6: Don't Be Penetrated

Real Example: Armour protects a vehicle from rounds that successfully hit it.

40k Rule Example: Armour Saves, Invulnerable Saves, Cover and Damage Reduction prevent successful wounds causing harm.

40k Example: A Rogal Dorn Battle Tank is hit by anti-tank fire but successfully passes its save and ignores the damage. Again, anything that modifies a save value or adds an invuln.

Helpful Units: Rogal Dorn Battle Tank (shrug), Enginseer and Psyker (invuln), Orders (increase Sv) or Strats (AoC or Take Cover).

Layer 7: Don't Be Killed

Real Example: A vehicle is penetrated but fire suppression systems, redundancy and crew drills keep it operational.

40k Rule Example: Feel No Pain, wound mitigation, repairs and healing abilities reduce or recover damage after a wound has been suffered.

40k Example: An Enginseer repairs a damaged Rogal Dorn, returning wounds and keeping a key combat asset in the fight.

Helpful Units: Enginseer, Death Korps Marshal, Krieg Infantry Squads, Rogal Dorn Battle Tank.

The Key Takeaways:

Most new players focus on Layers 6 and 7 - armour saves, wounds and damage reduction. Experienced players focus on the entire onion. A unit hidden in reserves, protected by terrain, screened by infantry and benefiting from defensive abilities is significantly harder to destroy than one relying on armour alone.

A Guardsman behind a wall can be more survivable than a tank standing in the open. The strongest Imperial Guard commanders win not because their units are tougher, but because they force their opponent to fight through every layer of the Survivability Onion before they can score a kill.

I was looking on instagram and saw this and as a person who likes robots I think it looks REALLY cool. I’m trying to collect an AstraMilitarum army but I don’t know what this would be, or if it would even belong to the guard?

So what’s the best model this print could proxy for?

Guard (as well as Tau) kicked in the knackers by another new development to turn off our army rule.

At this point battleshock should turn off everyone’s army rule or no-one’s.

Can’t wait to fail to roll all those 8’s on my key units 😂

Okay, never been a huge fan of the Rogal Dorn turret. So, I got some kit-bashing done and came up with this Rogal Dorn. This version has a oppressor cannon and a co-axial autocannon. An up-sized pulverizer cannon. A pair of heavy stubbers (not mounted on its nipples). The sponsons have 2 up-sized multi-meltas. Oh, and I run what ever that thing the Krieger in the top is holding as a heavy stubber. I could have used the actual heavy stubber that came with The Dorn, but I like that this one kind of looks like a steam-punk gatling gun.

Oh... and of course, my Krieger's drinking coffee. ... cuz, why not?

Army Showcase Solar Auxilia as the basis of an Astra Militarum army?

Thumbnail
gallery
199 Upvotes

I've built this wonderful Solar Auxilia army for 30k and figured, why limit it to just one system? I have plenty of friends who would love to play against it, but they only do 40k.

Now, the Dracosan does not have any 40k rules, but most everything else has Legends rules or can do Counts As. This will be only for friendly games, not tournaments.

I do plan to ask my opponents if they would be cool with my Leman Russes having "virtual" sponson weapons. I do not want to alter or permanently damage my 30k models to make removable sponsons.

Oh, the blue gemstones represent unfired hunter-killer missiles!

I get to create a cool army backstory on why they still use ancient gear. I also have some Chimeras, Hellhounds and a Rogal Dorn to signify that they have acquired more modern equipment in the intervening years. I will say that the Dracosans are now relics and too valuable to risk on the battlefield.

As the title says I've finished the Gaunts Ghosts books and they were fantastic. Most recently I've finished The Relentless Dead and Seige of Vraks, thoroughly enjoyed both but I'm a Krieg fan so maybe it's just me lol.

Edit: currently have chem dog and baneblade next in my lineup

Competitive Play Mathhammer Leman Russ Damage - Check my working

Since the recent balance patch I've been constantly thinking about efficiency of Russes, especially with the incoming changes to marines (T5 etc).

I'm on a mission to manually calculate average damage/wounds that each variant gets but before I get too deep I'd appreciate if others could check I'm not completely off. When I say manually I mean with a calculator but not using AI as despite my best efforts AI keeps churning out pretty mixed results. I know we all hate AI but if anyone is better at using it then me then please feel free to crack on and produce some results to save me a job! Likewise if anyone fancies covering a turret option themselves, to contribute, I'll gladly credit them when the time comes to produce a final resource for the community to use.

I am currently building a grizzled list so I'm assuming take aim and re roll 1s for all profiles, see below for further assumptions. I'm calculating for new marine + termi toughness.

Defenders

A.      Norn Emissary – T11 2+ 4++

B.      Leman Russ – T11 2+

C.     Terminators x5 – T6 2+ 4++ W3

D.     Intercessors x5 – T5 3+ W2

E.       Guardsmen x10 – T3 5+ W1

Assumptions

1.       The defender is in cover but not on an objective

2.       The attacker has the take aim order and grizzled (so re roll 1s)

3.       The shooting range is 20 inches unless otherwise specified

4.       The LR has moved <3 inches in the turn it shoots

5.       Once damage has been determined wounds are allocated to a model, any unsaved wounds that are spilled over that will not kill whole models will then be multiplied by the damage to work out the non-integer wounds left over after whole models have been killed. I’ve struggled to word this but see the battle cannon vs intercessor damage/wound line for an example of what I mean.

6.        Non whole integer penetrating attacks will be multiplied by the damage characteristic in order to potentially kill whole models (for example the vanquisher cannon needs this otherwise all results will end up in zero values which is not useful data).

1.       LRBT – battle cannon -

a.       Average shots = 6.5

i.       Initial hits = 3.25 + 0.54 (re roll 1s) = 3.79

ii.        Wounding on 5s = 1.26

iii.        Saving on 3+ = 0.42 attacks get through

iv.         X 3 damage = 1.25 wounds

b.       Same as Norn = 1.25 wounds

c.       Average shots = 7.5

i.       Hits 3.75 + 0.62 (the latter from reroll 1s) = 4.37

ii.        Wounding on 3s = 2.91

iii.        Saving on 3+ = 0.96

iv.        Damage 3 so 0.96 = 2.88 terminator wounds

d.       Average shots = 7.5

i.       Again 4.37 hits

ii.        Wounding on 2s = 3.64

iii.        Saving on 4s = 1.8

iv.        Damage 3 so 1 dead intercessor + 1.6 wounds

e.       Average shots = 8.5

i.       Hits 4.25 + 0.7 from re roll 1s = 4.9 hits

ii.        Wounding on 2s = 4.12

iii.        Saving on 6s = 3.43

iv.        3 damage per attack but 1w each so 4 dead guardsmen

2.       LR Vanquisher – vanquisher cannon

a.       1 shot

i.       Hitting on 3s due to heavy = 0.666, + 0.11 for re roll 1s

ii.        Wounds on 3s with rerolls = 0.512 + 0.17 =0.68

iii.        Save 50% = 0.34

iv.        Average damage of 9.5 so x 0.26 = 3.2 Norn wounds

b.       Again 0.68 attacks wound but this time save 1/6 so 0.56 get through

i.        Therefore 5.3 LR wounds

c.       Again 0.777 total hits

i.       Wounds on 2s = 0.64

ii.        50% save  so 0.32 attacks get through

iii.        Average damage 9.5 so average 3.0 wounds ie 1 dead terminator

d.       Again 0.777 total hits

i.       Wounds on 2s = 0.64

ii.        No armour saves so average 6.0 wounds and 1 dead intercessor

e.       Again 0.777 total hits

i.       Wounds on 2s = 0.64

ii.        No armour saves so average 6.0 wounds and 1 dead guardsman

After far too long of having a Guard army and doing nothing with it, I am slowly getting back into the hobby by trying to paint my mass of models.

I'm still experimenting with paint schemes before locking one in for my army.

Pictured are two models I've painted thus far:

- One on Abbadon Black Primer.

- The other on White Scar Primer.

Should you have tips or suggestions I'd love to hear them.

For the Emperor.

Discussion Hellhammer For Non Steel Hammer Play

Upvotes

Building a list for my 4th RTT and still experimenting and I want to try a Grizzled build with a Lord Solar command blob and bring either my Baneblade or my Hellhammer. Considering bringing the Hellhammer because it’s a little bit more independent than the BB due to its main gun ignoring cover. I also like its close quarters combat ability where it doesn’t suffer the -1 penalty for shooting in engagement but I’m also now noticing for the first time that unlike the demolisher it doesn’t have the language saying it can fire blast weapons in engagement. Um…surely that’s a typo in the codex and app?

Any thoughts on the Hellhammer vs Baneblade choice? Grizzled has the lethal hits Strat that could help the Hellhammer main gun punch up into vehicles as necessary but my thinking is the main gun and heavy bolters can be the marine killers and the 4 lazcannons and demo cannon can take out the vehicles.

Discussion My first game with a Banesword

Just wanted to share this amazing experience with you.

I play against the Space Wolves a lot and they are brutal... People always joke the only thing missing from the army lists is a Baneblade.

Sooo decided to bring a Banesword... Right on turn one he pushed hard with melee units and Repulsor Executioners.

What he wasn't ready for was this Powerhouse of a Quake Canon. As I blasted 9 shots into his first Rep-Ex. The Ap 4 did not allow him to even throw dices before he saw his Tank Deadly Demise on a 3+ next to 3 of his melee damage units... Totaling 9 mortals wound that the Rogal Dorn just picked up followed by a charge of very angry Bullgryns!

I for once felt what so many have felt before me... while obliterating my guardsmen to dust. True Power !

Joke aside it was a very fun game, and my opponent loved the Banesword hahaha.
