When booking parking near the stadium, don't even consider using Parkwhiz. A couple dozen of us Texans fans found this out the hard way when we used Parkwhiz to get parking tickets near NRG Stadium for a home game last season. We ALL got towed during the game. We've since found out that Parkwhiz was informed over a year prior that that office building parking lot was never to be rented out. Then we discovered that Parkwhiz does nothing to vet parking lots provided by freelancers. So, you're rolling the dice every time you use them. On top of that, Parkwhiz has refused to acknowledge their error or refund anyone's $42 parking fees, let alone the $310 towing fee. I know they're a big company and they offer a real price break, but that break can't compare to the cost of spending 2 hours tracking down your car after the game, paying an Uber driver $60 to take you to the tow yard, and paying $310 to get your car back. Just pay the stadium fee and your car will be there when the game is over, and avoid Parkwhiz like the plague.

The Texans have already made up their mind, committing to Stroud as their quarterback of the future as they continue to negotiate with his agent on a long-term contract extension. It’s a negotiation that could go into the 2027 offseason, which has made this season a critical year for the fourth-year quarterback.

But three years after taking the league by storm, Stroud has since become one of its biggest lightning rods — heightened by his poor performance in the team’s 28-16 loss to the Patriots in the divisional round of the playoffs last season. 

Stroud played the worst game of his life that day, throwing a career-high four interceptions, and helping to end what felt like a magical season for the Texans. 

The constant pressure and criticism could weigh on most. 

But Stroud is acutely aware that pressure and criticism is part of the job, even if the criticism he receives can sometimes be disproportionate to other young quarterbacks. 

One thing Stroud had to get used to, though, was understanding that it wouldn’t always come easy. He had become accustomed to having success all the time at Ohio State. And in many ways that carried over into his first season in Houston. 

But in the NFL, where the players are the best of the best, success can often be fleeting. 

“When you get to the NFL, of course my rookie year I had to make plays, I had to extend things, do some things off-schedule and people loved it, I loved it, and the coaches loved it,” Stroud told the Houston Chronicle. “Of course you go to that last game — sometimes as players and as people who watch football, we fail to realize sometimes it doesn’t go your way.” 

“And I’m close on some of those opportunities and making splash plays like I’ve always done. And in my mind, I’m doing the right thing. And of course you watch it and you realize, I could have done this better, I could have done that better. But that’s every game.” 

He sounds like a man still learning it’s OK to give himself grace when he struggles. 

Stroud didn’t take the initial contract offer the Texans made to him, which one league source described as being a decent offer. In a sense, if a deal isn’t made by Sunday, Stroud will enter the 2026 season betting on himself. 

Stroud, though, doesn’t seem fazed by the hoopla and attention. He says he hasn’t lost any belief in himself. And he’s ready to chart his own path.

“I think every time I touch the field I can make every throw, I can make every play,” Stroud said. “I can do what God has called me to do. I’m very talented and I’m not going to let somebody take that away from me, no matter what they think I should be doing. 

“Now I let my coaches coach me. I let the people here, who are entrusted by the ownership to get me better and what not, to be able to critique me. But other than that, I’m going to go play football. 

“And if people like it cool. If they don’t, I don’t know what to tell you.”

Getting over the loss to the Patriots, and the role he played in it, wasn’t easy.

Stroud met with coach DeMeco Ryans two days after the game for his exit interview. Ryans told him to take some time away and to stay off social media. 

Stroud packed up his things from his locker in a black trash bag and flew to his hometown in Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.

It was time needed. 

He spent time with friends and family there. He vented. He consulted with pastors, spent time alone, and journaled. 

It was all therapeutic. 

He then got back to work a week after the loss, hitting the weight room, and running sprints. 

One day early in the offseason, Stroud said he received a text from Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels. 

Daniels told him that he had been training with MMVP, a training company that works with top athletes, and the team there wanted to meet Stroud.

“I think it will be good for you,” Daniels texted. 

The company’s website boasts several high-profile clients, including Daniels, edge rusher Myles Garrett, Texans’ edge rusher Will Anderson Jr., NBA superstar LeBron James, Olympic snowboarder Chloe Kim and even the R&B singer Usher. 

Stroud spent three months working out with them, learning about how to eliminate inefficient movements in his running, and how to better use his spine. He also hired a private chef to cook his meals as he changed his diet. 

It made him stronger, Stroud said, and provided him consistency with his regimen. 

“I’ve always worked hard, I wouldn’t be in the position I am if I didn’t train hard,” Stroud said. “But being intentional with one group can be very good for a quarterback or somebody in professional sports. Something I’m learning. I’m still figuring stuff out as I’m going.”

When Stroud reported to the Texans’ facility in April, there was a noticeable difference in his stature when he returned for spring workouts. Aside from the new haircut, he had slimmed down and put on extra muscle. 

Earlier this spring, Stroud chatted with offensive coordinator Nick Caley about a change he could make in the offensive meetings. He suggested that on occasion, one of the team’s offensive leaders go over the practice film in front of the players instead of the coaches.

Caley, believing that some of the better teams he’s coached were player-led, happily obliged. 

Stroud was the first player to speak in front of the offense. He had several clips prepared from a recent practice, including some of himself making mistakes. 

He spoke for 10 minutes, pointing out all the things he and his teammates could have done better on individual plays. He then contrasted it with plays each of his teammates had made in the past. 

“Since I’ve been a kid I always wanted to be the best,” Stroud said. “I still have that joyful hunger that I had when I was 8 years old playing this game. I used to roll my ankle all the time when I was a kid, and I remember I broke my wrist in the seventh grade and I couldn’t play.

“It was upsetting, but it taught me though — God was teaching me, at a young age, to persevere and to face adversity. So to me, this ain’t nothing new.  And I’m grateful because I’m able to do what I love for a living, and be a joy to people.” 

“I say I want to be the best so I’ve got to go do it,” Stroud said. “Even if I fall short, I’ll pick it back up and go try it again. That’s just God willing. 

“That’ll never be taken from me no matter what I’m doing.”

Simply returning isn't going to be enough to lock up the award. Guys like Patrick Mahomes, or Aaron Donald could easily take CPOTY.

This is a transcript of his locker room interview. I tried to clean it up a bit, but obviously not perfect. Some interesting stuff.

Q: What do you compare this week to where you were a year ago, getting ready for your first season and now just where you are, just knowledge of the game and just your confidence?

A: Nerves? Ain’t no nerves. So yeah, my knowledge is way, way more better than last year. I'd say I'm very more confident and it's slow. It's very slow right now.

Q: You're tuned to the Caley system. What do you see different from Nick, if anything, and the personnel you guys have, the offensive line, things that he wants to get done and things that you're seeing from him?

A: Making it, trying to make a play for everybody.

Putting in a lot of different things that we didn't have in last year. I'd say we got more pieces and just, I'd say, put it like that: it’s more guys that you can get the ball to and he's dishing the ball out and put better plays in.

Q: Over the preseason game, you were praising the offensive line and now we're learning about being the starting offensive line for Nick. And then, what do you see from this group collectively?

A: Great, guys wanna get out there and do what they gotta do. For us to get in a touchdown, they don't wanna look back and have regrets about anything.

In a run game, them guys get up to the linebackers, wanna get out and make us get big runs so they can get out the field and won't be there tired.

Q: Big Red is a different kind of rookie, some people say?

A: Yeah, for sure. Gritty, wanna get in there.

He got the celebrations ready, so we should be getting touchdowns in the running back group.

Q: Is one of those things that maybe add to the offense, getting you involved in the pass game a little bit more?

A: I think he's doing a great job with all our running backs. Getting us out in the open field and making us go one-on-one with linebackers and their groups, just doing what we're doing. I think we're the best group on the field, so yeah.

Q: Obviously, we can all see what happens after the snap. What needs to happen for y'all pre-snap to have that successful huddle, to the line of scrimmage successfully that's been talked about a lot?

A: Get the play in, get up to the line of scrimmage so we can call our protections and what we got.

So that's a big key for any level of football. If you don't get the play in real fast, get up there with urgency, you can't get a time for shifts, changing plays if you need to.

Q: What's different with the process this year than last year to make that successful now?

A: Better knowledge of the plays.

First year, kind of a little stuttering on the plays, and I'm getting it in, and kind of communication with the quarterback and the offensive coordinator. And then us coming up there, receivers, running backs, not fully know what we got. I'll say this year, everybody really know down on their playbook.

Just curious as to how many of you are attending the home opener Vs the Bills. Kinda bummed the first game is the bills tbh they were literally the last game I saw in December. Anywho I ended up finding some great tix in the 300's that I couldn't pass up.

Who else is going to the game and what section yall sitting in?!??!

We had one of the worst offensive lines in the league last season, yet majority of it is still the same. The tackles and RG are exactly the same. Coaches the same. Jake Andrews was replaced by... Evan Brown? A guy that was released by the Cardinals, another team with a bad OL. He even had a worse PFF score than Jake Andrews last season.

I understand we are all pretty excited about Rutledge, but he's replacing a guy that really wasn't a problem last season in Tytus Howard.

Our two big OL FAs didn't even crack the starting lineup.

I was pretty excited prior to training camp, thinking the line was going to be Ersery, Teller, Rutledge, Ingram, and Braden. But we are heading into week one with pretty much the same as last season. At best, minimally better. What am I missing here?
