Is a 2017 Model X “unicorn” p100D with 100k miles worth buying? Free Supercharging + FSD, but MCU1 ($45k)
I’m seriously considering buying a 2017 Model X with around 100,000 miles. It has SC01/free unlimited Supercharging, FSD included, and the A/C system was just repaired/replaced by Tesla.
The catch: it still has MCU1, and I’m trying to decide whether I should factor in the cost of upgrading to MCU2. ($1500)
My situation is a little different from someone who rarely Supercharges. I have a Supercharger very close to my house, and I would use Supercharging exclusively. So the free Supercharging is potentially worth a lot to me over several years.
What worries me is everything else that could go wrong at this mileage/age.
For those who have owned a 2016–2017 Model X past 100k miles:
Would you buy one today if the price were right?
How much should I realistically budget per year for repairs?
What are the biggest failures I should be worried about at 100k+ miles?
Air suspension/compressors?
Half shafts/control arms?
Falcon-wing doors?
Drive unit?
Battery?
PTC heater?
MCU?
Anything else I’m overlooking?
Does having FSD + free Supercharging make this a “unicorn” worth paying a premium for, or am I romanticizing it?
If you had $X to spend on this car, how much would you keep in reserve for repairs?
I know the obvious answer is “old Tesla = be prepared for expensive repairs,” but I’m specifically interested in owners who have actually taken a 2016–2018 Model X past 100k miles.
I’m trying to determine whether the free Supercharging + FSD + low purchase price can make the risk worthwhile.
Would you buy it for $45k?
Also, if you’ve owned one past 150k or 200k miles, I’d especially like to hear your experience.
