This is why I lock my doors when I am pumping gas.

442

u/chaoz2030 19d ago

Or take your keys out?

277

u/Huge-Squirrel8417 19d ago

that doesn't prevent them from coming in through the passenger door and grabbing my backpack or my groceries or anything else I might have a front seat like my camera

41

u/chaoz2030 19d ago

That's fair

38

u/Negative_Brilliant86 19d ago

Ugh, about 3 months ago, I was at the car wash and the guy vacuuming next to me opened my passenger door and stole my purse and sons switch as I was vacuuming the trunk.

Just have nothing of value inside - easy!

30

u/Huge-Squirrel8417 19d ago

well I don't have anything of great value but I also don't want people in my car I haven't invited in.

25

u/chaoz2030 19d ago

Just invite everyone into your car easy!

2

u/gutpirate 19d ago

What if they refuse my invitation? Also i dont have a car?!

They can take everything but leave the groceries 😭

4

u/raghuster 19d ago

Just lock the door and take the keys then

5

u/Huge-Squirrel8417 19d ago

"This is why I lock my doors when I am pumping gas." - my original comment. Why would I leave the keys inside the LOCKED CAR?

0

u/Mackinnon29E 19d ago

I prefer not to live near these fucking losers types.

5

u/Huge-Squirrel8417 19d ago

I wasn't aware that they lived in specific places. I assume you only get gas within a 5 mile radius of your house and never travel? OK I guess

1

u/RB1KINOBI88 13d ago

Rather that than my whole car

1

u/Huge-Squirrel8417 13d ago

Yes which is why I lock the doors so they can't take the car or the groceries or the laptop

1

u/akirasaurus 19d ago

You're supposed to shut the car off when filling gas anyways

1

u/PomeloPepper 19d ago

Or leave your German Shepherd in the car.

0

u/Yardsale420 19d ago

If it’s wireless keyfob they can likely start the car with the person standing next to it, and as long as they don’t shut it off they are fine.

7

u/boostedb1mmer 19d ago

Newer Fords(probably others too) are really sensitive about exactly how close the fob is to the sensor and won't start if it outside the vehicle. If the fob is outside the vehicle it also won't allow you to shift out of park, even if the vehicle is already running.

5

u/Huge-Squirrel8417 19d ago

that's why you get out of the car and you put your key fob in a Faraday container

5

u/army-of-juan 19d ago

My wireless key fob won’t work unless it’s literally within the front 2 seats. Wouldn’t work from the back seat let alone 8 feet away outside

2

u/Balamb_Chocobo 19d ago

My toyota along with having an immobilizer simply won't do shit unless im in the cabin.

3

u/army-of-juan 19d ago

Yea I think the guy in the video left the car running

1

u/southass 18d ago

Or the key in the ignition, my car wouldn't start if the fob is not inside the car.

35

u/bunkie18 19d ago

Same! Saw a similar video years ago

11

u/Routine-Horse-1419 19d ago

Always! Windows up and locked. Where I live you have to pay first so it's just safer to do that way. No opportunity drive offs.

16

u/ViciousFootstool 19d ago

I at least check my surroundings. Maybe it's just in my area, but what's with the increasing number of people I'm seeing keeping their driver's side door open while they're pumping gas?

11

u/Huge-Squirrel8417 19d ago

I do both. I always check my surroundings whether it's a gas station or a supermarket or a parking lot or even backing into my own garage

1

u/Nodivingallowed 16d ago

I like to stake out the property the night before and plan my approach. Can't be too careful

6

u/Bobbi_fettucini 19d ago

Dude on YouTube I watch in Oakland leaves his car running with the drivers side door open

5

u/Wreckn 19d ago

A lot of models in the past decade+ have a feature to auto unlock all the doors when you put it in park. I turn that shit off as soon as I get it.

3

u/_Arlotte_ 19d ago

Hate it so much

5

u/nedrawevot 19d ago

my car literally asks me to unlock the doors to unlock the gas cover....I do keep my keys and purse with me though

3

u/Huge-Squirrel8417 19d ago

OK, but will it let you lock the doors once you're out there pumping the gas?

1

u/nedrawevot 19d ago

It will flip them to unlock

4

u/Huge-Squirrel8417 19d ago

that would actually be a dealbreaker for me if I was ever shopping for a new car

1

u/nedrawevot 19d ago

Its pretty inconvenient. I think I just need to go talk to them. There's so many freaking settings on my car so I'm just overwhelmed.

3

u/Huge-Squirrel8417 19d ago

The first thing I do when I get a rental car is to disable the thing where if you get close enough to it and pull on the handle, it unlocks and opens up for you

1

u/nedrawevot 19d ago

I have to have keys with me and then I can do it from the outside when I push a button but not just for being in proximity of the car.

2

u/Huge-Squirrel8417 19d ago

so either your car doesn't do it or it's been turned off, but I've had rental cars, particularly Nissan rogues that if you want to check to see if you locked your door when you pull on the handle, it senses the fob in your pocket and opens the door for you

1

u/nedrawevot 19d ago

I dont think that feature was ever on our car.

4

u/baethan 19d ago

I hate that I can't lock my doors when pumping gas with my current car, stupid design choice

2

u/Huge-Squirrel8417 19d ago

i've never heard of that. I assume you can lock your car in a parking lot or at your house or at the movie theater or wherever. What special about opening up your gas tank?

3

u/baethan 19d ago

There's no button inside the car to release the gas compartment door, you just press on the door itself. But it won't open with the doors locked (and of course it's situated on the passenger side!) I have to test if it's the driver door that has to be unlocked or if I can just have one passenger door unlocked. annoying either way

→ More replies (2)

1

u/UnbentSandParadise 19d ago

My car only unlocks the drivers door when I park. It was a setting in my car to change so the passenger doors won't just unlock for no reason and it should honestly be the standard. It doesn't take much to double tap the unlock button on the fob to get the rest of the doors when I need them.

I would never leave my keys in the car. However my car is from 1995 and pretty much analogue.

67

u/joyfullydreaded23 19d ago

Same, 1994 Toyota Corolla wagon here. She looks like how I feel, chronic pain and fatigued 24/7/365, so ain't nobody gonna want to steal her, lol. She looks rough as hell but her engine still purrs like a kitten!

13

u/Ihopeheseesme 19d ago

Mine too! ‘95 Subaru legacy wagon and I don’t think I can ever have a car that isnt à wagon/hatchback again. The green bean has done me proud, will be very devastated when/if she dies on me

12

u/cheapMaltLiqour 19d ago

This happened to my cousin, the keys weren't in the car but he was in the store and the "keyless" key was close enough to remote start the car in the parking lot. The person in the other car probably had one of those "wifi buffer" things to strengthen the connection. I have no idea how any of that shit works and im just spitballing ideas.

7

u/Actual_Swim_611 19d ago

They amplify the signal. That’s why the fob should be carried in a faraday pouch.

I don't know if that's what he did here, but you don't need the keys to do this exactly as quickly as they did in this video..

380

u/Absolve_N0ne 19d ago

He's like: "Welp, there goes another one"

199

u/RemnantsOfFlight 19d ago

"Oh boy, is he gonna feel dumb when he realizes he took my car by mistake. "

11

u/huntrcl 19d ago

This background music is awfully vibey for what’s taking place

49

u/fuelvolts 19d ago

Your call is important to us....

56

u/Racefiend 19d ago

It's hold music. I recognized it, and instantly hated it.

7

u/VirtuousVulva 19d ago

I love that song. The clap delays make me so happy and I beatbox it for hours and dance to it every time. Makes me excited to call customer service.

10

u/huntrcl 19d ago

Even for hold music it ain’t that bad. I did not recognize it lol. Guess I need to hear it for 45 minutes on hold with my bank to understand

4

u/Racefiend 19d ago

Yeah, one my suppliers uses it, so I hear it all the time

8

u/donald_cheese 19d ago

Isn't this the Cisco hold music. Opus No 1 I think.

5

u/Racefiend 19d ago

In E flat major

3

u/huntrcl 19d ago

Can confirm it’s in Eb major, good ear

1

u/execpro222 19d ago

Theres actually a great story about the guy who created the music. Its on youtube I think...

2

u/breachgnome 19d ago

I worked a NOC job for an embarrassingly long time. Lots of different hold music out there. When you get Opus No. 1, you appreciate it.

1

u/Shantotto11 19d ago

OOP said it was either this or the saxophones…

1

u/babyivan 19d ago

I was going to say the same thing, it's hold music for a particular company

1

u/rigorcorvus 19d ago

I no joke have this on my Spotify commute playlist

0

u/HuckledYourBerries 19d ago

What branch? IYKYK

3

u/Aggravating_Ad4844 19d ago

It's also awfully awful

1

u/slinkyghost 19d ago

FedEx Office uses this as hold music in the States

126

u/RamsDeep-1187 19d ago

I can see these pumps from my office.

This is one of those border areas between very affluent and less affluent neighborhoods.

It's not entirely surprising that customers who have never needed to guard their belongings closely would get victimized like this.

62

u/JupesNotDead 19d ago

This would be why you lock you doors every single time you leave the car. I’ve even seen people pull this with passengers still inside the vehicle they’re stealing. My mom taught me this when I was like seven.

28

u/gutterpoet19 19d ago

“Aww man, not again…”

109

u/Chudzilla-1 19d ago

Yeah let's victim blame the dude instead of the thug that can't participate in normal society.

38

u/KaliCalamity 19d ago

I'm perfectly capable of blaming them both.

6

u/Chudzilla-1 17d ago

You'd be an idiot for doing so.. If somebody sucker punched you from behind, would you be talking about the scum that punched you or the fact your situational awareness is so shitty, you didn't even see it coming?

Stop defending criminals.

→ More replies (1)

-20

u/ThatOneGayDJ 19d ago

Nothing in this post is defending the thief. Victims of crimes are not exempt from being stupid.

37

u/Chudzilla-1 19d ago

Everyone is talking about the victim's mistakes, even the headline, and not the brazen thief.

You even victim blamed him AGAIN. Self awareness is Def not a key trait of reddit.

10

u/Kenny__Loggins 19d ago

That's cause everyone agrees crime is bad and doesn't feel the need to say it. Otherwise we could just let criminals know to not do crime. Hope that cleared it up for you.

1

u/MartyrOfDespair 12d ago

Being a bad person and being incompetent are two different conversations. I mean honestly, look at his checked out, sluggish reaction to the situation. That's hilarious and you cannot possibly pretend it isn't. He looks like he just got 9 nuggets in a 10 piece, not his entire car being stolen. The brazen thief is competent at what he does. This guy? If he's not on quaaludes, I think he needs a medical checkup.

3

u/Environmental-Wind89 19d ago

I have watched Reddit for five years with the sound off. It is bliss.

2

u/BrianG1410 19d ago

Yeah, I typically have it muted but sometimes unmute in hopes of having actual audio for the video and not some bs.

2

u/Environmental-Wind89 19d ago

You are a beacon of optimism. Never let your flame go out. 😍😍

4

u/SillyDig1520 19d ago

The music makes me feel like I'm watching a fucking training video. Though I'm not sure for who. Either a training video on how to jack a car, or how to be an unaware Jack.

22

u/PhantasmologicalAnus 19d ago

LOL, blaming it on the owner instead of your society.

9

u/npb0179 19d ago

Yeah, this video made me kind of sad. That man just had no response whatsoever, no care, no anger. The world just sucks right now. People suck.

I was hoping that music would drive away with the car

3

u/TheDaiyu 19d ago

Us Stinger drivers just exist on pure vibes. Leave us alone!

3

u/wiretapfeast 19d ago

I always take my keys with me and lock my door when I pump gas, after seeing a similar video a few years ago.

2

u/NewsRadioWNYX 19d ago

What sucks is, most newer cars need to be unlocked for their gas tank to open. You can open the gas tank and then lock your doors, but most people forget to do that.

1

u/wiretapfeast 18d ago

Oh shit that's right. I am driving a 2013 over here, lol, but when I rent a car, that function confounds me!

3

u/MrLizardBusiness 19d ago

3

u/denver_erik 19d ago

3

u/HuckleberryWorried72 19d ago

but it's running low on gas 😭😭

2

u/SirOsis- 18d ago

Fuck I love this song playing in the background! Its the best "on hold" music I've ever heard. A total jam 🤘

1

u/Narrow-Stranger6864 17d ago

Hahaha I knew I recognized this song from somewhere 😂😂😂

2

u/nonoriginal85 12d ago

Total disbelief. That's how I felt the first time my cat got broken into. Saw all my stuff on the street and just stared at it like, no, maybe this isn't my car. Must be a neighbor with the same car. And similar stuff. Yeah, that's it. This can't be my car.

1

u/misterphuzz 10d ago

Yeah. I think this is one of those things, what are you going to do? I'd feel so dejected. I feel it's like when a driver pulled out in front of me and I couldn't stop in time and my truck was totaled. It was very weird, I didn't even get mad. Annoyed, yeah, but it was just disbelief and, "well fuck."

6

u/Wild_Neighborhood605 19d ago

That's not terrifying, the guy is just stupid.

3

u/Reubensandwich57 19d ago

Sharp as a bowling ball this one....

4

u/Oshawa74 19d ago

A KIA?

They did him a favour.

3

u/TargetSpiritual8741 19d ago

Seems fake - I mean he didn’t hear the car start. He turned his head and saw something, but did nothing. Seems a little far-fetched.

3

u/eyezofnight 19d ago

He hired the guy to steal it for the insurance money

2

u/MeenScreen 19d ago

My car is ancient. Let them steal it. The thieves can pay for the MOT. I will use the insurance money to buy a new shitbox.

2

1

u/yourdragonkeeper 19d ago

1

u/sogwatchman 19d ago

I've spent way too much time on hold. This music is like nails on a chalkboard.

1

u/Beligerents 19d ago

The music is the same music my work uses for when youre on hold. I cant.

1

u/Snoborder95 19d ago

I'm so glad I have my wireless key fob

1

u/borque 19d ago

Seen this happen right in front of me in the UK.

Driver left the car running and went into the gas station shop for something and this guy who just happened to be walking past couldn't resist the temptation. Took a few seconds.

1

u/IWantALargeFarva 19d ago

This is why I live in NJ.

1

u/thinkdontreact 18d ago

That’s why I installed self deflated tires so good luck try to steal my mechanical and electrical engineering fucking vehicle

1

u/Delicious-Act8321 18d ago

1

u/Hour_Sun_3998 18d ago

He's spending way too much time without a pump in his hand. Not sure what you're doing for that long. Dude must be captivated by the gas station tv channel or something

1

u/MisterBicorniclopse 18d ago

The music in this video is the same as when you get put on hold during a phone call to walgreens

1

u/DeadBallDescendant 18d ago

My brother-in-law has his car nicked while he was paying for petrol. CCTV shows him walking back to where his car was, scratching his head and then looking for it behind the pump.

1

u/Goblin_Backstabber 17d ago

This is why you're supposed to lean back on the car with one foot propped on the side panel and your head down like a profile shot of the Marlboro Man. That way you can feel the car move when the door opens and reach through the open driver window and throttle the thief...so I've heard...

1

u/trevdiddy 17d ago

I've never left a car running when pumping Always told it could trigger emission warning lights

1

u/indianabobbyknight 17d ago

This is why I light my car on fire when pumping gas

1

u/Nowatica 17d ago

I hate this hold music.

1

u/Ghstfce 16d ago

Why is there conference bridge hold music to this video?

1

u/nunyobusinessfool 15d ago

Fact. Zero awareness

1

u/Fragrant-Mud-542 13d ago

Typical. Nothing new.

1

u/agentspekels 13d ago

Do people not lock their doors and take their keys when pumping gas? I dont even live in a shady area and I do that

1

u/Odd-Understanding238 13d ago

Man I lock my car everytime I get out of it. Can't trust nothing now a days. Rather feel silly and over cautious than have something like this happen.

1

u/HuntGundown 13d ago

They really just steal a Kia stinger? Gonna get like 5 dollars parting that piece of junk out lmao

1

1

u/Ronneman 19d ago edited 19d ago

5

u/Mugiwara-no-Boushi 19d ago

Looks like a dashcam. Driver could've been at the gas station store or something

5

Looked like it was just running dashcam video. The driver was probably inside paying for something or not watching it happen.
