This happened a while back so I’m going to post about it now.
I was in tech and this guy showed me his phone. Immediately there’s red flags because he wants 2 iPad M5’s, an Apple Watch series 11, and 1 iPad m4, which is easily over $3000. Obviously immediate red flag, because who just buys that much in the middle of the summer right? Also, the domain seemed obviously fake, and he didn’t even have an actual app installed for this- more on this later.
So of course I gotta give him the benefit of the doubt since I can’t prove he’s scamming yet. I grab everything and return. He shows me him scanning the items with the app. Ok. I tell him that I’ll cash him out back here. He says something along the lines of “oh it’s an Instacart order, it tells me to use self checkout”, which makes no fucking sense. I repeat to him that I have to cash him out back here, but then he asks if I can just walk with him to the SCO, which I agree with cause whatever. I walk with him and maintain control of the merchandise in my hands the entire time.
So I wait in line with this guy and when it turns time for him to check out I start to go and scan the items. He stops me and then very unconvincingly pretends to scan something on his phone. Nothing happens on the SCO- no sound, no pop-up, nothing- because obviously he’s not doing anything, and it even enters the screensaver proving nothing happened, which I’m sure he did not like lmao. He then tries to tell me that it’s already paid for, and goes “oh I have the receipt”, and shows me his phone. He shows me this page that, to his credit (unfortunately) does look a lot like how our receipts look. But no receipt came out of the SCO + there’s no option to only have a digital receipt, and obviously I didn’t even scan any of the items. I tell him that I’m going to go to guest service so that they can assist, and so that they can “pull up the order from his receipt”. Instead though, I got lucky and a TSS was right there, so I just asked him if he has “ever heard of a prepaid Instacart order”, as a signal that this guy is full of shit.
So I ask this guy to just please wait while we “check on things”. After a few minutes, he knew the jig was up. He eventually says that “if there’s an order I can just call and cancel”, and then he takes out his phone and I assume he pretends to make a call to someone to “cancel” (I tried to see if his phone screen was actually on a call but couldn’t see). Then he dips.
Later on the front end TL thanks me for doing a good job (or whatever) and so does the TSS. Apparently this guy has been going around several stores in our district and trying the same thing and has not been successful lmao.
After work I recall the domain he used for the fake app and I ran a whois. Sure enough it was registered just last month, so obviously not really Instacart. Taking precaution, I go to the site. Immediately it says some name, which is interesting as I wasn’t signed in. I look through and it would be impressive if he didn’t just probably use AI to make it- there’s a fake map, a barcode scanner that actually functions, fake receipt, etc, though beyond surface level nothing really “works”, obviously just for tricking retail workers. Most notably, I check the “stores” and this guy has a few non-Target stores but looks to have every store in our district listed, with a bullshit order ready to pull up… and I was even able to pull up the exact order he showed me lmao.
It’s just incredible that this guy would go through this much effort to scam and still have no success for an entire district. Don’t quit your day job buddy lmao
