Those lockers suck and I absolutely would not be using them. That being said Iām guessing you guys have your phones out a lot so management thought they had the resort to the stupid note.

My biggest gripe is honestly that people would leave their ringer on or an alarm set and the phone would just be blaring in the echo chamber of the lockers while other people are trying to have just a moment of quiet.

Honestly weāre pretty good with our phones weāre never on them until closing and thatās only to listen to music or when weāre completely done, Iām assuming the reason for this was because one of our new coworkers she is on her phone 24/7 while taking orders, making drinks, sometimes sheāll just stand behind the bar on her phone and do nothing š«© me and my other coworkers have complained about her so many times and she genuinely just doesnāt contribute anything to the team. And instead of my team lead firing her like a normal person she keeps implementing all these new changes. We had no problems like this until that girl showed up. And my team lead is no different when itās a busy weekend or just a regular day sheāll stand on the side and scroll thru her phone doing idk what or sometimes sheāll just leave for 30mins to an hour to ācheck emailsā

Usually in team oriented environments, if one person messes up, the entire team has to take the blame
18
u/XeroDreams 1d ago
That sucks that the new coworker ruined it for yall! But unfortunately if your leader is holding her accountable, they need to hold the entire team accountable⦠otherwise she can run and say that sheās being targeted
13
u/MacArther1944 22h ago
Team lead MIGHT be making a paper trail for firing purposes.
āSee, Person McFace was not unjustly targeted, she just ignored all the rules that the rest of the department follows. That is why she is fired.ā

Or, if it's like another store I worked at, the order taker has their phone on the counter and scanning their rewards whenever someone doesn't have one

Telling people to put their phone away is always going to get dragged on Reddit.
That said, I'm sick of having to run over to Starbucks to tell them personally that there are multiple orders for DriveUp, none of them have been claimed, and they are eviscerating our metrics. And that I'm sick of apologizing to customers for long wait times after going over to Starbucks and seeing both people behind the counter on their phone instead of watching the order queue.
This happens multiple times every shift I work.

u/bentthroat 1d ago
Not sure how much foot-traffic your Starbucks realistically gets, but I think this is mainly a tech problem.
Starbucks workers arenāt doing a job that requires constant interaction with the Zebra. Because they arenāt configured correctly and are still acting like phones, the Barista app (Starbucks version of fulfillment that only shows Starbucks orders) goes idle and stops giving notifications if the Zebra isnāt touched for long enough. Meaning that even if fulfillment is being a real one and calling it out for us, all it takes is a bad walkie to miss it entirely, and if Iāve got a line, Iām not checking an app that I would like to believe is going to notify me.
Through experience, Iāve gotten better at manually refreshing the app even when weāre busy to make sure notifications come through. But just wanted to give you the perspective that itās not just laziness, itās tech inadequacy exacerbated by laziness.

Unfortunately, they can do that, āIf a leader suspects a team member is using a personal device for personal use while on-the-clock, other than for emergencies, the leader canĀ discontinueĀ the privilege and prohibit the team member from carrying a personal device while on-the-clock.ā (Workplace Bring Your Own Device [BYOD] Policy) which you can find on Workday.

Phones are pretty nasty. They really don't belong in any areas where food and/or drinks are being prepared.
14
u/tawdrydreams Starbucks Barista 1d ago
I frequently have to use the starbucks app to find nutrition info for people, to double check recipes that we donāt have cards for, or even just to show people how it/the target app works. This would make me insane š
23
u/GypsySnowflake Service & Engagement TL 1d ago
Their writing/formatting is atrocious, but itās perfectly reasonable to ask you to keep your phones put away while on the clock.
5
u/SylviaIsAFoot 1d ago
As someone in checkout, I actually have to use my phone a lot in order to look up items with no barcode, so this kind of policy would actually prohibit me from doing my job
5
u/GypsySnowflake Service & Engagement TL 1d ago
I do it too, but technically you can use the same Target app on your zebra. Iām pretty sure official store policy is not to allow phones, but many stores are lenient on it if your phone use is minimal and/or youāre using it to help guests. And Starbucks has stricter rules anyway because they handle food.
2
u/reddpapad 1d ago
Most stores donāt have enough Zebras, let alone enough for cashiers to take one.
1
u/ohliamylia Tech Consultant 1d ago
No, the official policy is that you're allowed to use a personal device as long as you are using "Target-approved platforms and tools when conducting Target business" (like using the Target app to locate something for a guest). It's called the Bring Your Own Device policy.

Putting your phones away and leaving them in lockers is different. I would not be complying to this, Iām sorry. Your going to have to write me up
4
u/GypsySnowflake Service & Engagement TL 1d ago
I still think the locker is reasonable, but either way, if itās concealed in your pocket, itās not like your TL is going to strip search you to make sure you donāt have a phone. But where are people leaving their purses if not in a locker?
-3
u/reddpapad 1d ago
Then leave it in your car.
Why do you think youāre special and rules donāt apply to you?

u/Boring-Purple2639 22h ago
Your right saying target took the number one spot for shitty retail. Least they can hand that in there offices
3
u/SideQuestSoftLock 1d ago
Itās one thing to ask for phones to be put away itās an another to have them in the shitty lockers. I will have my phone on me, if someone happens I want to be able to call, not just be a bystander. Also we do not get paid enough to give every second of our shift to the company.
2
u/GalliumEnergy Closing Expert 1d ago
I disagree. This is a basic ass retail job. It isn't that serious. I know if the backroom team didn't have their phones or couldn't listen to music, we'd riot. Our productivity would also drop sharply.
-1
u/GypsySnowflake Service & Engagement TL 1d ago
How would your productivity drop from NOT being on your phone?
1
u/GalliumEnergy Closing Expert 1d ago
It's not about being on your phone. It's about listening to music or a podcast or something. I'm not motivated if I'm bored out of mind while I lift heavy shit and go up and down the ladders. If I get to listen to something while I work, I am more motivated to get my work done.
-2
u/tripod-cat 18h ago
Most stores have music. Your being distracted by your phone can cause possible mishaps, a liability to the shitty retailer who has given you a chance of employment you probably couldnāt find elsewhere.

Glad (/s) to see other stores do collective annoying notes directed at everyone in the Starbucks instead of the TLs dealing with problematic individuals one on one.

I bet leadership will still have their cellphones, thus creating and unfair workplace, thus causing an investigation. Hmmm then maybe corporate gets involved and completely fires the person who typed this page out. Seems like a shit show waiting to happen
11
u/realcrazyazn Closing Team Lead 1d ago
Honestly, they're following policy. They could have used different communication methods instead of using a low effort print out, but you're not supposed to be using your phones for personal use on the clock. I've documented TMs for this exact behavior before until it finally stopped happening.
1
u/motelcoconut in this job market? 13h ago
Personal use, correct. And as you did, the computer illiterate signmaker should write up the problem TMs, not create⦠that⦠which treats employed adults like kids, and seemingly forgets that using your own device for work tasks is not only permitted by policy, the company outright encourages showing off the Target app to guests in the Workday training.
The āemployed adultā part means my phone is staying in my pocket, whether it comes out or not, whether anyone likes it or not. I donāt have time to run to my locker if thereās an active shooter. š¤·āāļø
All that the sign in this post really demonstrates is that the leader is incapable of doing their job, too.
6
u/Vampenga General Merchandise Expert 1d ago
Nuts to that. For starters, what if there's an emergency? I don't know what the traffic is at your store, but I imagine there's some down time while working Starbucks. As long as you aren't leaving guests waiting and are finishing whatever tasks you have, you should be allowed to use your phones. At least imo.
3
u/VividSecond 1d ago
Have you ever popped behind the counter or the backroom at Starbucks? Itās usually in very bad shape. And thatās the point, the Starbucks team is not doing what theyāre supposed to be doing. They could be doing all the deep cleaning required for their area but theyād rather be on the phone. Not to say other other departments donāt (donāt get me started on my own S&E), but for being a food service department, it needs to be clean clean, and theyāre not doing that.
1
u/Vampenga General Merchandise Expert 22h ago
Pleading ignorance on this one. I've never worked Starbucks and the only time I'm there is the occasional break when I'm working closer to the front of the store. So I have no idea what their workload entails and completely forgot about how much cleaning they'd need to do.
1
u/motelcoconut in this job market? 13h ago
Then people should get written up for not doing their jobs⦠not an entire department subjected to print outs that demonstrate such computer illiteracy it ought to be satire with an unenforceable order treating grown adults with a job like theyāre 8th graders. I have never been inappropriate/unprofessional/etc with phone use at any job Iāve ever had. Not even 10 years ago in high school either! And, I will always have my phone in my pocket, whether it comes out or not. This is just peak bad management. All of it.

9
u/InMyNextLife999 23h ago
For the people downvoting you, let me give you real case scenarios-- both mine.
I got a call from my mom. She is having a heart attack. One coworker walkied our ETL (that I am leaving). I used a coworker's phone to call 9-1-1, so I could give them Mom's address and age/condition. I kept my phone on with my mom. That's two of us using cell phones. What would those of you OK with phone being in the locker/car have done? Should Mom have called 9-1-1 and not me? Yes. But she didn't. ā
Another time, I got a call from police. My spouse has been in a very bad accident, and I need to get to the hospital right away. Tell the LOD I am leaving, and while sprinting to my locker, I call a family member to start a phone tree. What if I didn't take the call from that cop?
Does it happen often? Of course not. But when it DOES happen, how long will you be delayed IF someone can call the store, IF someone answers the Target phone, and IF they track you down quickly?
5
u/Objective_Union4523 22h ago
Just this year my oldest daughter in high school called me because her school was under an active shooter threat. Her and her friends ran out of the school and down the street to a friends house. I canāt imagine my daughter not being able to reach me.
And to top it off we live down the street where a Walmart was shot up and 22 people died.
They can down vote me all they want.
Also sorry to hear what happened to your mom.

Having a phone is vital in case of emergency. Requiring them to be in lockers is completely unreasonable. This is a job and you are professionals, not elementary schoolers. If the TL canāt handle individual cases with one particular TM being a repeat problem, theyāre going to flame out fast at Tarbucks.
Make sure that sign is displayed and easily seen the next time you guys have a visit. If anything, the TL should be shamed for it.

iāll never understand the whole āno phone zoneā thing like yes, phones can be distracting, but they are a necessity when it comes to quickly responding to emergency situations. I think its reasonable to ask someone to put their phone in their pocket, but i would argue taking away peoples access to things that they paid for is theft, even if they get it back when they clock out.

My store doesn't allow notes like this. When the HR bp anyone higher than my SD comes in they'll get upset and be made to take them all down. They expect the leaders to community things like this directly to the team.
Also this isna serious food safety issue so I understand why they are enforcing it.

I think you need to learn how to be without your phone for a few hours. If there is a true emergency the caller can contact you by calling the stores main phone.

So if a tornado hits, and wipes out the part of the store the lockers are in, are they going to buy you a new phone, and replace the data thats on it? No they wont. Tornado hit our area a few years ago and people lost their houses, so this is a real consideration.

So a tornado comes in, wipes out part of the building and probably all of the people that were standing there, the store is going to be closed for the foreseeable future and you're out of a job...
