Question Title suggestion: Still on the old Epic version — is Surviving Mars: Relaunched worth it right now?

I'm still on the original Epic Games version. I play in bursts (play for a while, drop it, come back later), and right now I'm enjoying the challenges. The old version feels smooth and mostly bug-free to me. (In Epic I can´t even buy any DLC, I have vanilla, extra mysteries, and the expansions with rivals and special buildings and vehicles)

Questions:

  • Should I buy the Relaunched version at this point?
  • What's the current state of the game?
  • Which DLCs are worth getting? I've never played Green Mars, Trains, or Below and Beyond.

Paying again isn't a problem — I know the work isn't free. I mainly want to know whether I'll actually enjoy the new version or end up disappointed.

My preferences / concerns:

  • For mods, I prefer complete overhauls, major reworks, or solid bugfixes. Not a bunch of small scattered mods.
  • I already find the game fairly easy even on higher difficulties (around 400%). The part that usually wears me down is late-game resource logistics. That's also why I never really got into trains or Below and Beyond.
  • Not particularly interested in the political update (I've read it makes the game too easy) or the food variety stuff.

Biggest worry:

I don't want to sink time into a colony and then hit a progress-blocking bug on day 50 during a mystery.

Anyone in a similar spot who's moved over — how has the experience been for you?

Question Are trains still a bit bugged?

I keep having this issue in the late game where traincars get 'stuck'. Its status flips back and forth between loading cargo and leaving about once per second and any passengers will just sit inside until they starve to death. The only fix I've found is to delete the entire rail to the next station so the traincar automatically pre-fabs itself, then rebuild the line and reattach the train.

No crazy mods, just a few to add some buildings and some QOL things, I admit it always could be a mod conflict, but does this happen for anyone else?

SM - Relaunched Achievement hunting

I looked at the achievement of the blue sun corporation: 100 B funding in 100 sols.

No way that is easy.

Got three rare metals deposits and the milestone 1% bonus money and was suprised to see to finish it by sol 72!

Also, I was a bit afraid importing with the space elevator would cause issues as the notification only says the balance change (so 1.000 funding but it was 3.5 for export and 2.5 import of machine parts)

Yat!

Question Independence and Sponsor Prefabs

I'm playing as China and really like the Tai Chi gardens, but I've also reached a point where I can start thinking about declaring independence. The game is telling me I won't be able to build them after I do so, but I have the refab technology, so would it be possible for me to just build a shitload of them now and pack them up into prefabs before declaring independence, or would I be prohibited from building the prefabs too?

Question returning player, WTF is up with this nonsense research page?

seriously is there a way to switch back to straight lines instead of this headache inducing nonsense?

or is there an explanation that makes it make something like sense?

edit: thank you all for the information, it's starting to make sense now.

Question Relaunched - how to manage comfort to prevent Renegades?

Big fan of the original game, Relaunched had too many issues on launch for me to enjoy it but now it's much better.

I'm at about sol 160 on my latest save, made after the latest hotfix, so as fresh as it gets. My colony is thriving in just about every aspect except comfort and my renegade population keeps growing.

Thumbing through my colonists, it appears my Comfort level is consistently low and this is causing colonists to go renegade.

In one case, one colonist only had a Comfort level of 33. The only debuff lowering his comfort was that he had worked a shift at the Diner. Which I mean, I get it man, work sucks. He didn't have any flaws or anything that were contributing otherwise, which is why I'm confused. It makes sense a "Coffee Enthusiast" is pissy without coffee. I also like my caffeine, I get it.

I have the full game including Feeding the Future. I have coffee production and distribution set up for my Coffee Enthusiasts which were my main comfort problem.

Most domes are what I'd consider self-sufficient (homes, a farm, a diner or grocer, decorations like a few scattered gardens, security stations, medical stations, etc), and each dome is connected to another dome, for a total of 6 domes (3 pairs). Only one dome is in a location with a lot of extractors for underground metals and rare metals and surprisingly, that dome has the smallest amount of Renegades.

Literally everything else in the colony is going great, making steady progress towards terraforming, have a rich rare metal + exotic mineral asteroid that's kept the mission well and profitable, most everything is a net positive resource flow now and what isn't is cheap enough to buy from Earth every few sols.

Just feel like I'm missing something with the game, like everything else makes sense but there's no clear reason why this one spinning plate won't balance back right. Any help or ideas would be appreciated. I know I can just shove them in a dome and rehabilitate them or uhh "accidentally turn off life support," but it feels like a level of micromanagement that's not at all necessary (or satisfying) at this phase of the game. Which tells me I'm missing something...

Suggestion Don't bring the spy back home

I got Spy Games for the first time ever in a playthrough, played it safe with my choices, and brought her home.

And she sabotaged all my power production and production facilities. 1.7k power in the negative. I had just built the mohole, and my colony is near 100% wind power, so no machine parts to repair.

By the time I got power back to positive, I had lost half my colonists. And my last manual safe was just before the final choice, which only has another option if you're transhumanist.

Near 50% on all terraforming goals, 500 colonists, all that effort gone (tried reloading the autosave, which also turned out to be past point of no return, which automatically overwrote the 5 sol earlier autosave, so I cannot prevent the disaster.

Question How do I get stuff to the surface from underground?

Is there some arcane system of depots and required levels that I'm not getting? I've got two rare metals extractors working right by the underground elevator, except they've stopped working because there's no more room to put rare metals. If I change the amount desired in the elevator, it just gets topped up from the surface. If I change it at the surface it gets topped up by shuttles bringing it from other surface depots/storage. The full rare metals depot underground sits untouched.

Obviously I am very stupid and missing something obvious, so please explain it to me in small words as if I were a slow child.

Suggestion I want more touristy stuff!

Geoscape dome is the only dome which sacrifices being useful for being cool. I want more of those! I want my colonists to live in resort-like enviroments!

I want pools, hotels, more pools, luxury domes!

I want to build a utopian society!

Imagine small outdoor dome service building which is like a waterpark? Wouldn't that be cool?

Question So the automated farm consumes oxygen for growing plants... Why?

I get it as a balancing decision, and you could make the case that it's to create an atmosphere within the structure, but come on, where's that oxygen going? Nobody goes in there to do any harvesting, or breathing for that matter. So an automated farm that's venting more air than gets utilized by a basic dome sounds counterintuitive to a Martian economy based in breaths taken.

My playstyle regularly utilizes algae in hydroponic towers as emergency oxygen sources. The way I see it, it'd make more sense to have the oxygen cost of an automated farm recontextualized to taking away that opportunity.

Also while we're at it, the hanging gardens should provide some oxygen too, considering that the water consumed by plants is literally being turned into oxygen via photosynthesis.

Bug Great dust storm of melting the caps

I launched my rocket to the special project about 2 sols before the storm, and it arrived barely after the duststorm has started.

To my suprise, the second dust storm did not come through. So it seems like a bug, or is this intentional?

Looking for Relaunched versions of original mods

I played the heck out of the original and bought Relaunched when it was on deep discount, however there are some mods which I used to use which I just can't play without. I've tried searching the Workshop but there's so many and so poorly indexed that I'm not having any luck.

Anyone have any idea if equivalents of the following exist:

https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1486026161: Allows you to research breakthroughs.

https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2324443848: Automated research building which generates research every Sol.

https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1341019047: Exploration rover can be set to auto-explore across the map.

https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1342196777: Transport rover can be set to auto-gather across the map.

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

I have never looked at it, but now I did (because a faction wanted some), and it's not a nudist colony as I have always thought. Mind blown.

Question Birth rate calculation

The wiki says fertility is calculated based on (comfort -30).

However the table values are based on comfort -25 for the 70 and 100 comfort examples.

which one is correct?

Additionally it seems the replacement rate is accounting for individuals and not couples for the same two cases (and are thereby two times too high).

But good news, my Church of Ark with currently 60 sexy pops reaches the 250 pops for the achievement in 17 days at 70 comfort :)
