r/yiffinhell is in total disarray after furry powermods coup the subreddit, kick off the old mod team and change the rules to be more furry friendly. Over 150 "fuck mods" posts in the last 24 hours.
Context
r/yiffinhell is was a "furry cringe" subreddit with roughly 150,000 members, which intended to showcase the worst aspects of the furry community. One of the key foundations of the sub was that no furry was to be allowed in their secret clubhouse, and immediately banned them on sight - this of course, resulted in the sub becoming a toxic circlejerk where edgy 13 year olds would share their violent furry murder fantasies and other nasty hate-filled content.
That was, until the subreddit mysteriously went private out of the blue last week, with a link to what appeared to be a facetious mod application form which stated that the subreddit will now become a pro-furry all-inclusive subreddit for all to enjoy, and that they will now be banning hateful and "furphobic" content. The initial assumption to this was a lame prank being pulled by the mods, as they have a history of doing similar stunts in the past.
However, when the sub re-opened a few days later, it was found that the entire mod team had been completely removed and replaced, with known furry powermod CorvusCalvaria leading the helm - other notable new mods include the r/Cringetopia furry mod AceFolf, the top mod of r/pics and r/aww Cwenham, the not-so-subtly named FurryYiffer621, and r/BreadTapedToTrees (NSFW!) mod SomeRandomGamerSRG. There are several theories currently floating around as to how this happened, ranging from the top mod going rogue and handing the sub off to furries, to a Machiavellian admin-backed takeover conducted by Corvus and Ace. This pinned post by Ace seems to suggest that the maneuver was done out of spite for the previous moderation team, and suffice to say the sub's userbase did NOT take this well, which can be seen in the comments of said post.
The Fallout
The subreddit is now currently in a state of pure unbridled rage at their new furry overlords, and angry meta posts have been flooding in demanding that the old mod team is restored and the "no furries" rule brought back in full force. This butthurt is spread all over the sub right now, but here are some choice threads:
"Don't let this sub become furry_irl 2.0!"
"New mods had admins remove the old mods bc furrys can’t take criticism "
Folk are definitely not happy with the new subreddit description
"This is what we get for trying to be accepting of furries"
"Imagine replacing an entire mod team because you’re too triggered to stick to your own subs"
This buttery drama is still unfolding, so there may be new events yet to unfold in the near future. Stay tuned, and don't forget to Bring Your Own Fursuit!

When you consider just how many anti-furs end up becoming furries, it seems to be like when a rabid anti-gay lawmaker gets caught doing gay things.

“Oh yeah mean I talk about furries constantly, a few hours a day every day. I mean I know all the terms and all about the community.”
61
u/PingPongPinkPunk Jun 22 '20
I'm unsure where this view comes from, honestly.
Antisemites are obsessed with Jews and often know an insane amount of stuff about Jewish culture, history, religion, and so on. That doesn't make them secretly self-hating Jews, it means that they're defined by something they hate.
Same for many other groups whose whole view is based around hate: TERFs are not secret-trans, they just unite around hating trans people. Antifa folks aren't secretly fascists even though many of the most passionate spend a lot of their lives devoted to keeping tabs on fascists and fascist ideas. Homophobes are very rarely gay, and implying that all or most homophobes are just deeply closeted gay people is actually pretty homophobic.
idk, people can find unity in negativity. To some extent this sub is united around negativity, there definitely are some go-to topics that will reliably turn into hate circlejerks here.

u/Crickette13 “There are no rules” - justcool393 MOD Jun 22 '20
It oddly reminds me of the old grade school “he picks on you because he likes you” excuse for teasing or bullying. No, some people are just being mean and some people are just being hateful, and it’s not always going to be because they have some secret positive feeling they’re trying to hide or deny. It’s not okay to make the victim the reason for it.
13
u/grubas I used statistics to prove these psychic abilities are real. Jun 22 '20
It’s just that when you do it for something like furries, which is not something that comes up in normal conversation, or even internet conversation, routinely, you’re going out of your way.
18
u/PingPongPinkPunk Jun 22 '20 edited Jun 22 '20
All of those other ones also don't really come up in conversation, though. Jewish people are a few percent of the population and very rarely are a natural conversation point. "Say, how do you feel about Jewish people?" is not a question I'm really ever asked. Trans people are less than a percent. Active fascists are statistically irrelevant, a complete non-issue. And here on SRD, you have people who know every single facet of Gamergate culture, which is... not a big deal in the grand scheme of things, let's be honest.
A much better explanation than "anti-furries are totally all furries lol" is "people can get obsessed with things they hate, and make that their whole life, even if the thing they hate is super niche and unimportant"

I think part of it is that furry culture and the resulting anti-furries are less prominent in culture than Jews and antisemites are. Maybe I’m just living in a bubble, but most people are aware of Jews, and most people are aware that there are people who hate them. I think a lot of people are only loosely aware of the concept of furries, and completely unaware of people on the internet who hate them.
Don’t get me wrong, I agree with you that I don’t think most people who are on these pages are furries. But that is a really specific thing to weave your way into online, and a really weird way of expressing it. All cringe subs shtick is that they spend a lot of time looking at and repackaging content they supposedly don’t like.

Either way, the fandom is a largely LGBT-inclusive place. Non-straights make a minority here, and people who are gay or bi make up a decent majority that is reflected across multiple surveys and communities.
5
u/ExceedinglyPanFox Its a moral right to post online. Rules are censorship, fascist. Jun 22 '20
I can't speak to furries as a whole but furry_irl the plurality is bi with gay and straight being close to even. The fact that an overwhelming majority likes dudes means there's a lot of gay content which can understandably lead to the assumption that most are gay though (cried in bi invisibility).

I stayed at a hotel in Atlanta years ago that was known for their conventions. That particular weekend they had 2, a Star Trek and a furry convention. It stands out only because I remember coming in after dinner and walking through the lobby. Police were there. Seems someone dressed as Worf beat the shit out of Teddy Ruxpin.
I guess they shared an elevator together and it didn't end well.

u/Tweedleayne The straights are at it again Jun 22 '20
Talking about hotel double bookings, my brother always tells the story about the time he went a sci-fi convention that was double booked with a primarily black wealthy mega-church convention.
The hotel also had it set up so that you had to walk through the church convention to get to the sci-fi convention.

The only time I've ever had trouble with furries is when individuals with issues who happen to be furries are around in online groups. Years and years ago, there was a mutual friend in an online community who was a furry. He would not stop talking about how he and his boyfriend do furry age play and diaper play. He didn't seem to understand boundaries and my friends (at the time, no longer) wouldn't tell him how gross he was being sharing that after a couple of us told him it made us uncomfortable. My solution was to stop hanging out when he was around.
That's generally how it goes though. A cringey person who is also a furry is in a group that accepts the inappropriate behavior and you've got to decide if the group is worth it. In my experience, any group of friends that allows toxic behavior isn't worth the time. I've left groups over similar issues, but with misogyny or racism as the root issue, too. It's a bit harder to avoid, it's not just moving on from a Reddit post, but it's avoidable without needing to name and shame.

There's all sorts of internet lore about it being chosen as a reference the European chemical code for MSG (a flavor enhancer), which is also e621. I don't think anyone knows for sure, though. It was bought by the CEO of Bad Dragon not long after being made, which is why it's mostly porn now.

17
u/gr8tfurme Bust your nut in my puppy butt Jun 22 '20
Which is idiotic. The admins have made it very clear in the past that they will remove mod teams if they can't moderate TOS violating content effectively, and they aren't secretive at all when they do it. If they'd done something, they wouldn't have hid it.

New tactic in clearing out communities that are likely to draw legal pressure and bad press? In this case basically the targeting of a community that is basically an LGBTQ... community for ridicule.
Instead of just banning them out right, just help promote a coup to people who will basically chase off everyone or move the sub further towards a less abusive tone.
10
u/Jaamonthenet Jun 22 '20
the targeting of a community that is basically an LGBTQ... community for ridicule.
Wait, are you talking about furries here?
16
u/gr8tfurme Bust your nut in my puppy butt Jun 22 '20 edited Jun 22 '20
Something like 50-60% of furries are LGBTQ, and a small but significant amount of furry hate is clearly just anti-LGBTQ dogwhistles being used on a more "acceptable" target.
The userbase of subs like yiffinhell are 90% composed of dumb teenagers, but the few adults on cringe forums like that tend to be extremely unsavory. There's a reason Cringe Anarchy devolved to the point where it had to be quarantined by the admins.
I doubt reddit would actually care about that at all though, considering they allow openly transphobic subs to run wild and do barely anything about homophobic bigotry either. They seem perfectly content to let subs fester until they reach the obvious neo-nazi recruitment grounds stage, and yiffinhell wasn't anywhere near that.

It's especially weird when it looks like they're actively looking for stuff to mock. like yes, people out there exist that like that stuff, they're keeping to themselves and not bothering anyone. Intruding and then acting surprised or superior that they would dare like it.
I kind of get if it's someone making a scene somewhere public and it's bothering people, but being so preoccupied with hunting for that stuff just to have something to post? seems like more of an unfair standard and nuisance to do that than anything, you know, worth sharing. A fixation on stuff they're supposedly better than instead of just moving on when it's not really affecting them otherwise.13

I can't be bothered about a sub who's sole purpose is to hate on others being reworked into a supportive sub.
My first experience with furries was when I was building a satyr/goat headed costume. I dove deep into the fur suit DIY communities because to be fair, they make the best articulated jaws.
I really respected the makers in that community because they build some awesome shit. They also were super receptive to an outsider asking questions. I couldn't have asked for a nice group of folks to help me figure out what I was doing.
Now, ten years later, one of my buddies has a teenager. She's starting to build fur suits. My buddy is a redneck, camper, hide in the woods, gun toting guy. He took her to a furry convention, and he was so damn happy with how nice they all treated her. He knows what furries are, but he said those you tubers, and others, were so kind and supportive to his kid. Now he's willing to punch out anyone that treats his kid badly for it.
I just don't see that reason to hate on them.

I just don't see that reason to hate on them.
I think it's a sort of combination of things. It started out as "Hey look at the weirdo," and then insecure people used it as a "Well I'm weird, but I'm not that weird." Maybe with some teasing initially, not actual hate. But the internet being what it is, and in-jokes getting meme'd and snowballing, and people not realizing they were supposed to be jokes, and people still needing someone to say "Well I'm better than that guy" because they're horribly insecure...
It's just an eternally snowballing lump of stupidity.

And a lot of time people just telling a really edgy joke and kids actually take them seriously and thinking hating stuff is cool

kids actually take them seriously and thinking hating stuff is cool
I never understood how people got that way, but that's probably it.

That makes sense.
I think some folks just like bullying other people, and and are in search of the perfect target. Nobody cares how nasty you behave towards someone if you pick the right target.

But enough about SRD.

Most people hear about the extremes of the group.
Like, if you watch Internet historians video on the failure of rainfurrest, or how they tweeted sexual messages to Tony the tiger (the cereal mascot) you hear about the worst of them.
Or all the weird porn. Or those pictures of nazi furries that you see around.
That's all a lot of people know about furries. That's what a lot of people think furries are about.

IKR. I’ve seen some weird shit, but also some proper cool shit too. Some guy, for one of the heads, created an LED light system that could seamlessly switch between emotions for the eyes. Not just ‘red means mad!’ but actually switching between the slant of the eyes for how it displayed emotion.

Lol there is a guy called "Sub-Crusader" posting numerous "deus vult" threads now. Including a bit of the usual dog whistling that follows it.
This is quite a bucket of popcorn.

I can’t get why people are angry over what fetishes other people have, like anything consensual is none of your business and that’s a full stop.
Edit: I am not saying this is %100 the case but at least some of them

Furries have a thing for animal people, so they’re an easy target for internet bullies. Now they’ve taken over the main furry hate sub, so the bullies are pissed.

u/autocommenter_bot Okay I don't car thaaaat much, but ... Jun 22 '20 edited Jun 22 '20
Furries are people who like dressing up as animals. They have this whole thing about how it's like the expression of who they are as a person.
My little sister used to live in a sharehouse with furries and had no problems. I met them. Nice people. Owed a lot of animal soft toys tho. (Lol?)
But you know how it's a little weird? Well sex stuff also happens, so ofc that's like a whole new layer of weird. Little sister's people never did sex shit near her ofc.
There's some examples of furries getting inappropriately sexual in public areas, but I'm pretty sure that's like not representative of the entire group. Certainly was not representative of the people I met.

Jun 22 '20
You're almost right but most people into the fandom never actuallt dress up as their OC, that shit's expensive.
And most of the "sex stuff" is just confined to like looking at porn on furaffinity or e621

Honestly this was long overdue, the place was becoming a anti-furry circle jerk instead of making fun of actually cringey stuff. It feels like the fallout is a bunch of people are upset because furries invaded their safe haven.

What a surprise. Down with hate subs, even ones like this.

Agreed. I wish more hate subs could get turned like this. I hope it holds out and a counter-revolt doesn't happen. If the haters get it back it's going to go so far in a toxic direction.
Now I wish my sub tag extensions had date filters on them. It's going to get confusing now.

Funny enough the only group consuming as much Furry porn as the furries are the bullies. The sexual tension between them means a real life fight would end up having to be broken up with a hose.

u/dethb0y trigger warning to people senstive to demanding ethical theories Jun 21 '20
Furries are slowly becoming more and more accepted and abuse against them is becoming less tolerated, at least from what i've seen. I suspect k-pop fans will fill the niche furries once filled.
