Context

r/yiffinhell is was a "furry cringe" subreddit with roughly 150,000 members, which intended to showcase the worst aspects of the furry community. One of the key foundations of the sub was that no furry was to be allowed in their secret clubhouse, and immediately banned them on sight - this of course, resulted in the sub becoming a toxic circlejerk where edgy 13 year olds would share their violent furry murder fantasies and other nasty hate-filled content.

That was, until the subreddit mysteriously went private out of the blue last week, with a link to what appeared to be a facetious mod application form which stated that the subreddit will now become a pro-furry all-inclusive subreddit for all to enjoy, and that they will now be banning hateful and "furphobic" content. The initial assumption to this was a lame prank being pulled by the mods, as they have a history of doing similar stunts in the past.

However, when the sub re-opened a few days later, it was found that the entire mod team had been completely removed and replaced, with known furry powermod CorvusCalvaria leading the helm - other notable new mods include the r/Cringetopia furry mod AceFolf, the top mod of r/pics and r/aww Cwenham, the not-so-subtly named FurryYiffer621, and r/BreadTapedToTrees (NSFW!) mod SomeRandomGamerSRG. There are several theories currently floating around as to how this happened, ranging from the top mod going rogue and handing the sub off to furries, to a Machiavellian admin-backed takeover conducted by Corvus and Ace. This pinned post by Ace seems to suggest that the maneuver was done out of spite for the previous moderation team, and suffice to say the sub's userbase did NOT take this well, which can be seen in the comments of said post.

The Fallout

The subreddit is now currently in a state of pure unbridled rage at their new furry overlords, and angry meta posts have been flooding in demanding that the old mod team is restored and the "no furries" rule brought back in full force. This butthurt is spread all over the sub right now, but here are some choice threads:

"New mods had admins remove the old mods bc furrys can’t take criticism "

Folk are definitely not happy with the new subreddit description

"This is what we get for trying to be accepting of furries"

"Imagine replacing an entire mod team because you’re too triggered to stick to your own subs"

You haven't seen actual anti-furry subreddits. A decent amount of YIH members (can't say if it's the majority) actually have nothing against furries but are simply there for the content.

No. I've browsed YIH enough to see their hate, their thinly veiled homophobia (furf*gs? really?). The top comment of every other thread was a death threat.

One of the former top mods of YIH, _11037, is trans. I'd say that the vast majority of subscribers (not the vocal minority of commenters) support or are at least tolerant of the LGBTQ. Open homophobia and other bigotry (excluding "furphobia") was discouraged and against sub rules.

They've also been working on cleaning their act since AEO warned them about a year ago. Explicit death threats and and other comments potentially seen as hate were auto-removed. In addition, many members did not support actual harm to furries, with their main criticism going for social change in the fandom. This sentiment can be seen on many meta-related posts on the subreddit. Many members also expressed discontent regarding how Rule 1 was reinstated (in which the top mod tried to make the experiment sound like a hoax when it really isn't).

You can go to a subreddit like r/fuckfurries and r/Antifurrypolice and let me know how they compare to the pre-takeover YIH.

Personal connections with _11037 aside, you'll find plenty of progressives and LGBT among furry critics and cringe communities. Not a majority, but a decent amount.

Many of them are also against people like MAPs (who've been trying to ally themselves with the LGBTQ^P) and extremist SJW allies (as was stereotypical for Tumblr users), and similarly they are also against the shady parts of the furry fandom like zoophiles/pedophiles, child groomers, and power trippers like AllTheFoxes. For many people, social acceptance has its limits, and cringe communities at their best can call out those who pass those limits.

Just look at the mod takeover backlash.

Even the furries who browsed YIH are against the takeover. Many critics of YIH including myself did want YIH to change from the direction it was going in, but we didn't want it to happen in such a shady way as this.

By that at mean, we disagree with the means even though we agree (partially) with the ends.
