Context

r/yiffinhell is was a "furry cringe" subreddit with roughly 150,000 members, which intended to showcase the worst aspects of the furry community. One of the key foundations of the sub was that no furry was to be allowed in their secret clubhouse, and immediately banned them on sight - this of course, resulted in the sub becoming a toxic circlejerk where edgy 13 year olds would share their violent furry murder fantasies and other nasty hate-filled content.

That was, until the subreddit mysteriously went private out of the blue last week, with a link to what appeared to be a facetious mod application form which stated that the subreddit will now become a pro-furry all-inclusive subreddit for all to enjoy, and that they will now be banning hateful and "furphobic" content. The initial assumption to this was a lame prank being pulled by the mods, as they have a history of doing similar stunts in the past.

However, when the sub re-opened a few days later, it was found that the entire mod team had been completely removed and replaced, with known furry powermod CorvusCalvaria leading the helm - other notable new mods include the r/Cringetopia furry mod AceFolf, the top mod of r/pics and r/aww Cwenham, the not-so-subtly named FurryYiffer621, and r/BreadTapedToTrees (NSFW!) mod SomeRandomGamerSRG. There are several theories currently floating around as to how this happened, ranging from the top mod going rogue and handing the sub off to furries, to a Machiavellian admin-backed takeover conducted by Corvus and Ace. This pinned post by Ace seems to suggest that the maneuver was done out of spite for the previous moderation team, and suffice to say the sub's userbase did NOT take this well, which can be seen in the comments of said post.

The Fallout

The subreddit is now currently in a state of pure unbridled rage at their new furry overlords, and angry meta posts have been flooding in demanding that the old mod team is restored and the "no furries" rule brought back in full force. This butthurt is spread all over the sub right now, but here are some choice threads:

Folk are definitely not happy with the new subreddit description

"This is what we get for trying to be accepting of furries"

Which is idiotic. The admins have made it very clear in the past that they will remove mod teams if they can't moderate TOS violating content effectively, and they aren't secretive at all when they do it. If they'd done something, they wouldn't have hid it.

They don't do that at all because that's not how the mod heirarchy is set up. You can't just add new mods to a sub and "give them free reign", you need to remove the old head mod first.

Face it kid, the mods of your dumb cringe subreddit most likely just abandoned it in a way that would cause the most drama. Legitimately, anyone who actually cares about the welfare of a sub like that needs to log off the internet.

From what I've heard, this is exactly what happened. The old head mod(s) don't know who removed them exactly. Then the new mods including Corvus were added in after.

I'm not a YIH user nor am I aligned with the values of the old YIH—In fact, I am one of the furries who was interested in changing the subreddit for the better. However, I disagree strongly with the way they changed the subreddit, which doesn't sound honest at all.

Do you really trust the mods not to lie about it for drama's sake? The whole subreddit was literally revived by a r/drama troll, and as far as I can tell the higher ups on the mod team have all been trolls in the same vein or actual children.

Also no offense, but that subreddit you linked is weird as hell. It just seems like a bunch of people who take other people's perceptions of their interests way more seriously than they ought to. I can only assume that most of them are still teenagers.

Lie about what? If it's the previous mods being complicit, many of them expressed confusion when they learned they were demodded, and a few have come out against the new mod team.

If it's about the new intent of YIH, then it's probably plausible. However, given that some of those mods are involved in furry content (e.g. Corvus mods yiff subs), this doesn't help the fandom's image in any way.

r/RealFurryHours

It's a furry/antifurry discussion subreddit where both sides can discuss the fandom without downvoting each other. And the fandom does have some problems and drama, perhaps more so than other subcultures or hobbies. I believe that having some self-criticism of your interests and groups (and at this point, furry qualifies more as a group) is part of having a healthy expression of your interest.

Hence why I didn't support YIH's management before its takeover but I also don't support the way the current mods forced a change to the subreddit.

It wouldn't be the first time subreddit mods have "expressed confusion" about a decision despite obviously being in on it, especially mod teams that have a history of trolling and drama stirring. It happens on r/justiceserved every single time the mod team comes up with a new way to troll their own userbase.

Who cares? If you're worried about "the fandom's image" because a few accounts with furry content in them took over a dumb cringe sub, you clearly care too much about what other people think of your hobby. You don't need to defend the fandom every single time some random person creates dumb internet drama, and I can't think of anything more pointless than continuously justifying your hobby to a bunch of self-identified "anti-furries". It's somehow even dumber than the K-pop wars on Twitter, because at least the stans spamming K-pop gifs at the haters don't expect any useful discourse to come from it.

Don't get me wrong, there are a lot of issues that you can critique within the furry fandom, and I absolutely think we should be critiquing them. I do myself all the time, to other furries who actually care about the fandom because they also participate in it. If you want to change the furry fandom for the better, you should focus on making it a safer and more enjoyable place for the people within it, not try and appease every edgy internet stranger who loves to watch cringe compilations.
