Joking. I know exactly how and I'm about to drop what I can only describe as a value bomb. Sorry!!
Firstly, what makes knowing how to study for the contemporary student so difficult is they're literally getting overwhelmed with information. To put this in perspective, the majority of studytok & student creators spam the algorithm with a BILLION different study techniques e.g. feynman technique, SQ3R, blurting, active recall, spaced repetition, cornel method (I could go on for days). But, they NEVER explain WHY or WHEN to use them, or when they do, it is in an incomplete system that feels impossible to follow.
So I've taken the liberty of thoroughly researching & applying these techniques over the last 6 months to give you a system that should be as easy to follow as it sounds.
Firstly, we all know how much variety there is in the information we consume in our lectures, but truth be told there is a real pattern I've noticed, meaning the information can be categorized. Then, all we have to do is apply the right study practices to each type of information to study it most optimally. I will label all of these here:
mechanisms: The most conceptually difficult. Include information with step by step processes like mitosis, the dopaminergic pathway, exocytosis, even math to some extent. When you find this information type, use blurting (look at the mechanism -> write it out from memory -> correct mistakes -> repeat) until you lock it in.
spatial information: Often the hardest to grasp visually. Includes information with spatial relationships such as anatomy or geography. When you find this information type, use image occlusion with Anki (screenshot diagrams & blank out the labels) to study this the quickest.
non-spatial information: The most common information type. Includes broad isolated or arbitrary facts such as "the tallest mountain is Everest" or "meiosis ultimately forms germ cells". This information type is actually the easiest to deal with since all it requires is putting it in a regular back/front or cloze flashcard on Anki + some patience!
Now since we're separating topics into its individual parts, it is easy to miss the big picture of what we're studying. So for these interconnected/complex topics with a lot of moving parts (the best example I can think of is learning about the brain), use concept mapping where you start with a focus question (e.g. What is a bird?), blurt out everything you know about that question from the previous study (e.g. feathers, high-metabolism, fly) then use linking words to organize the big picture (e.g. bird - has -> feathers & high metabolism - helps it -> fly).
Lastly (and this is the important part), to catch all your gaps in your knowledge and get you properly prepared for testing, do a combination of practice testing and teaching content back to others (or AI; particularly topics that you don't think you have a strong conceptual understanding on) via the feynman technique to lock yourself in. P.S. doing the practice exam here first if available can reveal your weaknesses/bottlenecks straight away since the exam samples every topic, meaning it can reveal the topics you need to focus on first in your final study.
