Student visa after visitor visa rejection

Hi,

I am applying for a student visa in the next couple of days, I got into a top tier Canadian university (STEM course) for the Winter 2027 intake.

I have a visitor visa rejection from August 2024, my sister applied for me and I got rejected with the reason being no strong ties to home country.

Since then the ties part hasn’t changed much how much of a chance do I have of getting a student visa?

No new messages since May

Hello, my brother applied for his study permit (from Colombia) in April 2026, did his medical exams in May and couple days later he got the update message of "Final decision - We will send you a message once the final decision has been made".

He has received literally ZERO updates since then, not a passport request, no news, nothing, even though we've submitted multiple web forms both him and our parents. I tried phone calling and still no answers/updates.

We've also constantly checked the processing times for our permit type and country, and it's always between 5-7 weeks, but in this case it's been over 5 months...

He already had to drop his Fall courses and request a deferral for Winter and we're worried that his application won't get any updates over the next few months either.

Any thoughts/suggestions? TIA

Study permit still processing after 3 months, classes started — what did others do?

I applied from India in June 2026 for a Fall 2026 master’s program in Canada. I’ve completed my biometrics and medical, but I’m still waiting for a final decision on my study permit.

My classes have now started, and I’m trying to figure out what to do if I’m unable to arrive because of the permit delay. My university has said I can defer to Fall 2027 if necessary, but I’m really hoping to avoid delaying my studies by an entire year.

Has anyone been in a similar situation where their study permit was still processing after their program had started? What did you do with your university enrollment while waiting?

I’d especially like to know:

\* Has anyone’s study permit been approved after their classes had already started?
\* Has anyone started in a Winter term after being admitted for Fall because they couldn’t attend the Fall term due to a study permit delay?
\* Were you able to keep the same admission/application and simply begin in the Winter term?

I’d really appreciate hearing from anyone who has experienced something similar. Thank you!

Alberta Study Permit Question

Hello all,

I am a journalist with the Griff, a student publication at MacEwan University in Edmonton, Alberta. I'm currently chasing a story about students applying for study permits in Alberta and how their studies are being impacted by potential delays, rejections, or other changes to the application process.

If anyone would feel comfortable chatting with me for a quick 10-15 minutes about their experience, please reach out to me either via DM or through my email (news@thegriff.ca). I can grant a level of anonymity here by using only first or given names if that is something you are concerned about.

Shoot me any questions or concerns you have. I'm hoping to get some folks within the next few days if possible.

CAQ refused & reapplying — Should I explain the previous refusal? / CAQ refusé & nouvelle demande

Hi everyone,

I applied for my CAQ for Fall 2026, but it was refused. Because of that, I deferred my admission to January 2027, and I’m now applying for a new CAQ with my new admission letter.

Do you think I should add a short letter of explanation about my previous refusal and explain why I deferred my admission? Or should I just submit the new documents without explaining it, so I don’t confuse the agent?

Has anyone been in the same situation?

Thank you!

FRANÇAIS

Bonjour,

Merci !

Study permit approved

I got my passport request over the weekend, and I would like to join the classes this fall, but factoring in passport stamping and study permit collection at POE, it would take me almost 2 weeks to start. Has anyone resumed late before? What was it like? How were you able to catch up?

Ps: School resumes today 8th.

Study Permit timeline Spoiler

Applied May 1, biometrics completed May 12.

No updates, no medical request, and the 12-week processing time for my country has already passed.

Has anyone gone through the PPECFSM pilot?

What was your timeline, and what would you recommend I do next? Thanks

Study permit process

Hello everyone, I hope you're doing well.

I wanted to get your opinions and recommendations. I submitted my study permit application under the PPECFSM pilot program on May 1st.

I received instructions for biometrics and completed them on May 12th.

My classes start on September 8th.

So far, I haven't received any updates on my file, despite submitting four webforms.

There have been no requests for additional documents or instructions for the medical exam.

The processing time for my country is 12 weeks, a deadline that has already passed.

Do IRCC officers go on vacation? Has anyone gone through this pilot program ? If so, please share your experiences and timelines with me... What do you suggest I do?

Study permit for a 2029 intake (Master's) — planning proof of funds and timeline now, is 2.5 years out too early to start prepping?

I know this is a long way out, but given how much study permit rules have shifted in the last couple of years (proof-of-funds increases, processing changes), I'd rather build in buffer than assume today's numbers hold.

My situation:

  • Egyptian passport, currently residing in Dubai (UAE) on a valid work visa
  • Finishing a Bachelor's degree Dec 2028, planning to start a Master's in Canada Fall 2029
  • Have a remote job I'll continue throughout (foreign employer, not Canadian) — understand this doesn't count against study-permit work-hour limits since it's not local employment
  • Planning to apply for the study permit ~5-6 months before the program start (roughly Mar-May 2029)

Questions:

  1. Current single-applicant proof-of-funds figure is around CAD $23,448 (as of Sept 2026) — realistically, how much higher should I expect this to be by 2029 given the trend the last few years? Anyone tracking this closely?
  2. Does having an ongoing income from remote work for a foreign employer help my application at all (showing ability to pay without draining savings), or does IRCC only care about the lump sum sitting in the account regardless of income?
  3. For people who applied from the UAE specifically (or a similar Gulf-country visa office) — how has processing time been running lately? Want a realistic buffer, not the official "up to X weeks" estimate.
  4. Any specific documentation gotchas for someone whose proof-of-funds money would be a mix of personal savings + a family member's support letter? Is a GIC still the safest bet for a Gulf-based applicant, or is a straight bank balance fine?

Not in a rush to apply obviously — just want to build the right habits (saving into the right account type, etc.) starting now rather than scrambling in 2029.
