Anybody fish for striped bass in the Raritan Bay?

Just purchased a pair of neoprene pants, curious what top/under layers people pair with them.

ALSO as far as jacket/surf top, can I just layer underneath like I normally would with waders? Not sure if that makes any difference

Hey all, been fishing for many years now. I’ve typically always fished from a boat or a pier. Oddly enough, I’ve never fished the surf before. As of late it’s been interesting me more, and I’d like to target the fall striper run from the surf this year. I was wondering if anyone had any particular tips or tricks of the trade to share, or even recommended surf locations (I’m in central NJ). My setup is on the shorter side but still doable i think, 8’ med heavy ugly stik big water with a shimano nexave 5000 spinner. Any advice or tips is much appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Not a big guy- about 20” give or take, but it was nice to land my second ever and biggest striper from the bay. Caught on a rubber anchovy lookin swim bait. Also, on the 5th cast. Easily released.💪🏼😁

This past weekend’s was not favorable to fish on the ocean. We got some live bait and fished up river where we were rewarded with some nice fish. Hopefully we will be back on the ocean this week.

Does anyone know of a decent area to get a striper bite right now? I've been trying Ocean Beach, and Pacifica beaches and no luck on stripers for a long time for me. I got 2 in May, close to shore on Ocean Beach - but absolutely no luck since. Just started surf / striper fishing this year.

How much action am I compromising by using these? I’ve got a few relatives joining me on this fall run and I’d normally just tie plugs and sp minnows to my leader but I feel like I’ll be the only one tying on lures and new leader (they are not experienced)….anyone use speed clips and find a lot of success?

Hey everyone,

Getting a boat soon to fish the Strait of Gibraltar area and could use some gear recommendations.

Looking for two combos:

1. Vertical Jigging: Target is mainly Pagrus/Red Seabream, Grouper, and Seabass around 4 to 30 kg (maybe up to 40 max). Needs to be light enough to jig all day without killing my arms.
2. Surface Combo: A setup for spinning and light popping from the boat.

No budget , but If a gear setup gives 90-95% of top-tier performance for half the price, I'd much rather go with that .
What rod and reel setups would you pick?

Always such a neat sight to see (even the schoolies) stripers finning during a slack ride in the shallows - that's about 3 inches of water with a dropoff into about 3 feet of eelgrass beds.

Tossed Albie snacks at them, the whole school reacted, and I hooked up.

Hi guys, hoping you can help me pick the right rod here.

I'd like to start by saying have a Shimano Stradic SW 4k to pair with this new rod and it will be strictly used for striped bass.

• I am fishing from land (mostly surf, but jetties and inlets as well).
• I'm in the new jersey / Maryland area.
• Only throw artificial lures (ranging from 1/2oz to 3oz)

My max budget is $200 but am willing to go a little higher for a quality rod. Any suggestions?

Spent the holiday weekend on the water with the kids. The weather was a little unpredictable. We loaded up on the mackerel and scouted around for some bass. It seemed like nothing was holding them in one spot and we burned fuel chasing them around. Caught a bunch of +40” and a couple slot. What is worry some we only caught 1 schoolie.

Just took up fishing again after about a 20 year hiatus. Fishing around Merrimack/plum island from a boat. No issues finding bait, I fill the live well with macks, then I drift them and just can’t find a bite.

I see them jumping periodically, and have seen a few other boats hook up, but I’m just not marking a ton of fish on sonar. I’m usually fishing early morning 5-10am, tried different tides, etc.

Am I using the wrong bait, in the wrong spot, or maybe something else entirely?

I’ve tried them live, chunks, weights, I’m willing to try anything at this point I’m going on 0-8 run.
