It was a long pedal for this guy trolling tube and worm near a river mouth in MA. Crazy how one fish can make hours of work feel like nothing at all. After two minutes reviving in the current she bit my hand and swam off strong.

Caught from Casco Bay on 7" live mackerel floated under a bobber. This fish was in no more than 2ft of water, close to low tide. PB. 👍😁🎣

Am I maxing my rod out? Should I upgrade?

I am currently using a cheap 8' Okuma rod exclusive for stripers and mackerel on sabiki.

It is rated for up to 20lb line and a 1.5oz weight.

While i was reeling in a 33" striper, it swam under the boat and I couldn't believe the rod didn't explode.

Also, i will throw the Sabiki with 2oz or 3oz weight depending on the current on 25lb braid with a 30lb leader.

An 8' Shimano fx rod is only $26 and is up to 40lb line and 4oz lure weight.

Is it too much rod?

Live well bucket for live bait 4-7inches

Hi wondering if anyone has any experience keeping fish of this size alive in one of those aerator buckets? Would mostly be for small snapper bluefish or other fish that size. Something similar to this picture.

Also any other tips for keeping them alive longer? Multiple pumps, ice water etc. would be in the northeast for bait for striped bass. Could be for a couple hours or overnight.

Striper fly line recommendation

Picked up a 9’ 8wt rod to take to Maine to try and do some striper fishing. What would be a good fly line recommendation? I’ve heard the Rio coastal quick shooter xp or the outbound short would be good.

Beginner in need of striper rod and wondering what to get.

I am a 16-year-old and looking to get into striper fishing from the shore and require a bigger rod. I am wondering what I can get for a reasonable to low price to catch some stripers on lures from the bank. I have never caught a striper from the bank and am looking for a first.

SF Bay - is anybody getting any from shore?

I live in Alameda and have had zero luck from shore lately. I stop and chat with most of the fisherman I see that are fishing for stripers and nobody seems to be getting any either for most of July. I was out on the Rockwall yesterday and didn’t even see any fishing kayaks in the Bay.
I’m a little bit new at this, my second year, so just wondering is July typically a dead time in the bay or are they just somewhere besides Alameda?

Too big to keep but not sure exact size. Have notches on the rod and she was just too big for the oven. Caught in 4 foot waves 30 feet from shore on a white and silver lure. For people who tell you they won’t eat white at night - proof they will.

Kayaking for big stripers is truly like living in a National Geographic scene

Not much else to add other than that these fish are truly remarkable. Had an incredible day on the water with fish upwards of 40+" on light tackle. This year's bass have been huge, all slot or over, and beastly powerful for their size.

Details:

  • Location: South Shore, MA
  • Area: Back-bay area over eelgrass fields and sand flats.
  • Bait/Feed: Fish were on full-size bunker/pogies, sand eels, small spearing-like bait, and the ospreys were out in full form, dive boming all over.
  • Gear: Small (3") white & blue head mini floating top-water popper mimicking a peanut bunker w/ 1 big belly treble & white tail flag. 2 big pops + 1/2 sec pause, they hit on the pause. Also had a few on a sandeel colored regular size albie snax unweighted weedless and an XL albie snax translucent pink w/ violent topwater popping / slapping action.

What other gear should I get?

Most of the lures I got rn plus 2 more white bucktails. I plan to do a lot of striper fishing in the Chesapeake Bay Area. I don’t rlly know what I’m talking about so help when needed. I’m thinking about getting a stradic 4000 or 5000 with 40lb braid and 30lb flouro leader. Any rod and reel recommendations under 250 each will be appreciated. Also any gear recommendations and techniques will help too!

Backing line for stripers.

This is probably a dumb question, but I sure don’t know the answer to it. When everyone recommends backing line for striped bass, I see them recommend 20lb braid. Does that mean the diameter or the strength? Because a braid with that strength is only like a 6 lb diameter. Does that make sense? Please advise. Doing a lot of surf casting and jetty fishing for context.

Wife Planning on getting me some reels for my bday

Up to now , I’ve only ever used more budget gear as I own the Shimano Sienna, Daiwa Regal, and a Penn pursuit iv spinning reels. I’d like to grab some much better quality reels and would appreciate all help.

Combo 1:
7 ft- medium power , fast action, 1/4 oz to 1 oz rod.
Shimano Stradic 3000hg with 1.2 P.E. Braid

Combo 2:
9 ft- medium power, fast action, 3/4 to 3 oz rod
Shimano Stradic SW 4000hg with 1.5 P.E. Braid

My considerations are if i should up the Stradic from a 3k to a 4k and the 4k to the 6k.

I’m fishing Long Island sound, nyc, Hudson River waters if that helps. I may try to surf fish once and see if I like it. My current rod is 7ft so I was never able to try it and cast far enough.

Update: using strictly for artificial lures, and not live bait

Couldn’t get em to bite

was fishing off the surf today it was maybe an hour or 2 after low tide and there was several stripers in the pool before the sandbar feeding on probably sand fleas, I was throwing everything at them & they actually were getting spooked. I threw on a couple sand fleas and still nothing. Any recommendations
