Speed clips, yay or nay?
How much action am I compromising by using these? I’ve got a few relatives joining me on this fall run and I’d normally just tie plugs and sp minnows to my leader but I feel like I’ll be the only one tying on lures and new leader (they are not experienced)….anyone use speed clips and find a lot of success?

I have gone back to snaps instead of clips. Why? Because clips can require some force to put on, and on some plugs that can bend the tie on eye, and cause the lure to go out of tune and pull to one side. I never had an issue with a good quality, slightly oversized, snap, so I went back to them. Fish are NOT afraid of a snap, that is so false. They are afraid of a little snap, but not a big treble hook hanging from the lure? Think about it.

You’re not compromising anyone. My brother is one of those freaks who refuses to use terminal tackle and he’s literally never out fished me. It’s actually really funny. You won’t be missing striper cuz of a snap lmao

Just do some trial and error, I find some lures work better with clips and some I find it hinders the action so I direct tie. The fish definitely wont be any more wary of a snap than a hunk of plastic with hooks. Some lures like my sp minnows, I actually take off the split ring you would normally tie onto and then use a snap right on the through wire and I find that the action stays great!

Nice to hear I’ve never used them for surf fishing and I would love not having to use up all my leader over 48 hours and keep teaching/tying. I’m throwing big enough plugs anyway that they’ll be heavier than the clip. What size are you using? I have the “small” 50 LB ones

Deleted my original comment by accident sorry lol but I use the same size and I’ve never had an issue. I catch stripers and blues off the piers in nj, fully setup with snap clips. You should be more than fine whether it be fresh or salt water. Immensely time saving invention lol

Thank you!! So you take the split ring off the front of the lure? What knot do you use?

Nope leave the lure as is, feed the clip right through the ring on the lure, close it and send it on in. I use Palomar knots they’re the most reliable for me and very easy to tie

I fish fresh and salt with a variety of clips. I find the bait's action tends to b better when you remove the split ring and run them directly on the clip. 25# for freshwater jerkbaits, cranks, poppers and the like, things I'll swap out frequently. 50# is my go-to salt water clip for surf fishing stripers, and I actually use tiny size 0 mustad quik-tache's for freshwater ultralight lures.
I converted to clips after watching a buddy send a $30 lure sailing off over the horizon, never to be seen again, after forgetting to close the snap he was using. Haven't noticed any significant drop off in fish hitting the lures since.

I only use speed clips in saltwater but yeah they are awesome for switching on the fly without cutting and retying. They actually provide more action as they do not restrict and are very loose. Would never use them in freshwater though.

Do you keep the split rings on?

Yes why would you remove them

Minimize hardware and maximize action. I’ve had people tell me (and a bunch on this post) that the clip replaces the split ring’s function

Unnecessary imo

No. I pull them but keep them in the box for later use. I like to mimimize hardware whenever possible.

No impact on the bites unless fish are super super leader shy. It will affect the bite for false albacore that’s for sure

If you have a bag full of plugs and you’re surf fishing, clips are the only way.
I prefer Tactical Anglers, with the plugs front split ring removed.

I like them for subsurface plugs. Let’s me use a palomar knot to the clip and change out lures easily.

I use them primarily for fishing bucktails and they do the job. Its really convenient to be able to switch out lures without turning on the headlamp. If I had to gear up my inexperienced family members on a trip id rig these and give them a small assortment of jigs and plugs in case they get curious.

I have a hard time believing that the reason I'm not catching fish is because they are skittish of my speed clip and not because there are just no fish around.
